MENLO PARK, Calif., Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) has awarded two $100,000 grants to postdoctoral fellows working in universities to encourage research in the management, treatment and cure of myotonic dystrophy (DM). Each of the 2014-2015 recipients will receive $50,000 a year for two years. This award cycle brings MDF's total research funding to over $1.7M and builds on the Foundation's commitment to increasing the number of investigators focused on myotonic dystrophy research. "The MDF fellows have created real impact in DM research since we started this program in 2009," says Molly White, executive director of the MDF. "Many have gone on to secure additional research funding from organizations such as the NIH, author important research publications, and help drive interest in DM research at major pharmaceutical companies. A major objective of the Foundation's work is advancing DM research and the fellows have been a significant part of how we achieve this objective." The 2014-2015 awardees are: Dr. Jintang DuDr. Du's research will seek to develop DNA-binding Py-Im polyamides (macromolecules with repeating units) to bind specific, identified CTG-CAG triplet repeats that cause DM1. Long-Term Spinal Cord Stimulation Stalls Symptoms of Parkinson’s-like Disease

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2014

Released: 1/22/2014 12:00 PM EST Embargo expired: 1/23/2014 5:00 AM EST Source Newsroom: Duke Medicine Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise DURHAM, N.C. -- Researchers at Duke Medicine have shown that continuing spinal cord stimulation appears to produce improvements in symptoms of Parkinsons disease, and may protect critical neurons from injury or deterioration. The study, performed in rats, is published online Jan. 23, 2014, in the journal Scientific Reports. It builds on earlier findings from the Duke team that stimulating the spinal cord with electrical signals temporarily eased symptoms of the neurological disorder in rodents. Finding novel treatments that address both the symptoms and progressive nature of Parkinsons disease is a major priority, said the studys senior author Miguel Nicolelis, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurobiology at Duke University School of Medicine. We need options that are safe, affordable, effective and can last a long time. Spinal cord stimulation has the potential to do this for people with Parkinsons disease. Parkinsons disease is caused by the progressive loss of neurons that produce dopamine, an essential molecule in the brain, and affects movement, muscle control and balance. L-dopa, the standard drug treatment for Parkinsons disease, works by replacing dopamine. While … Continue reading

Family Plans To Treat Son With Marijuana

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2014

A Georgia family moved to Colorado in preparation to treat their 10-year-old son with medical marijuana. Caden Clark suffers from epileptic seizures and cerebral palsy. Medical marijuana is not legal in Georgia and the family told us they had to move to Colorado Springs to get the help they needed. "We have hope that's all I can say. We have hope and we didn't before," Cadens mom Kim Clark said. Kim moved to Colorado Springs with Caden and her 13-year-old son Jax. Caden was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, which causes seizures. Kim said when hes sick, it's sometimes up to 70 a day. Kim said she was drawn to the Springs after seeing a CNN special about families in similar situations. Featured in the special was a non-profit foundation in Colorado Springs, Realm For Caring. They use cannabis oil to treat those with severe medical conditions. "When I first saw this I was like, 'Okay I'm going to go talk to Chris about marijuana,' Kim said. It took awhile, it took some work, because the first thing he was like, 'No that's what I do, I'm not introducing this, I'm certainly not giving it to my child.'" It was tough … Continue reading

Schumacher Brain Injury Puts Focus on Need for Treatments

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2014

Each year 50,000 Americans die from brain trauma and another 275,000 are hospitalized, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After retired race car star Michael Schumacher severely injured his head in a fall while skiing last month, doctors in France removed part of his skull to relieve dangerous swelling in his brain. How much their treatment will help in the long run is an open question. Aggressive care for head injury can keep some patients alive and maximize the odds of recovery by preventing further damage. Even so, treatment often remains elusive -- an invasive, hit-or-miss process that requires months or years of rehabilitation with uncertain results. Each year 50,000 Americans die from brain trauma and another 275,000 are hospitalized, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Attempts to make drugs to protect injured brain cells have so far failed, so doctors main recourse to prevent the damage from spreading is relieving pressure inside the skull as well as removing blood clots. We desperately need a breakthrough, said Peter Andrews, a critical care specialist at the University of Edinburgh. Schumacher, 45, a seven-time Formula One champion, was placed in an induced coma by … Continue reading
