LVHN hosts cosmetic surgery open house

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2014

If you're looking to "get a little work done," you're not alone. Demand for cosmetic procedures is growing. Now, hospitals are hoping to cut into plastic surgeons' business -- a trend they claim could save all of us money. If your New Year's resolution is a new you, get in line. "No doubt, more and more patients are coming to us for cosmetic work," said Dr. Randolph Wojcik Jr., a plastic surgeon with Lehigh Valley Health Network. "Our percentage of cosmetic patients increases every year." From Botox to breast implants, cosmetic procedures are hot. "I see all age groups," said LVHN medical aesthetician Jennifer Anllo. "I see men and women." Now, hospitals are hoping to cash in on that growth. Hospitals only performed 19 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2012, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. At an open house Thursday, LVHN hoped to lure patients from private doctors. Anllo believes hospitals have a lot to offer cosmetic patients. "We have a lot of doctors here that help me find the best products -- more medical-grade," she said. The real attraction for some patients is that many procedures can now be done on their lunch break. … Continue reading

Man sentenced after selling unapproved drugs

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2014

BROWNSVILLE A man reportedly licensed to practice medicine in Mexico but who had operated a medical clinic in Brownsville was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison Thursday. Francisco Morales, 54, was sentenced for conspiring to introduce misbranded and unapproved new drugs into interstate commerce, according to a statement Thursday from U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson of the Southern District of Texas. Morales, who pleaded guilty, admitted he sold an unapproved drug product to his co-defendant Lawrence Stowe, 60, and misrepresented himself to the public, Magidson said. Morales would falsely tell patients he was experienced in stem cell treatments when he had only attended seminars and read research papers on the subject, according to Magidson. In a separate case, Morales bought stem cells from a South Carolina company and then illegally took them to Mexico to treat U.S. citizens there, Magidson said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved the use of stem cell treatments for people. Stowe admitted he advertised and promoted therapies to treat patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Lou Gehrig's disease, falsely claiming they had been reviewed by the FDA for treating the diseases, according to the federal statement. Neither Stowe nor Morales were … Continue reading

SOURCE Cord Blood Registry Signals Potential of Newborn Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine for Common Disorders SAN BRUNO, Calif., Jan. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Cord Blood Registry (CBR), the world's largest and most experienced newborn stem cell company, announces the start of a U.S. Food and Drug (FDA)-regulated study being conducted at Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando to investigate the use of a child's stem cells from their own stored umbilical cord blood as a treatment for acquired sensorineural hearing loss. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20131216/DC33657LOGO-a) In the United States, approximately 15 percent of children suffer from low or high-frequency hearing loss.[i] The most common type of hearing loss, especially at high frequencies, is sensorineural. Acquired sensorineural hearing loss results from damage to hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea) and can be caused by illness, medication, noise exposure, birth injury, or head trauma. A child's ability to hear affects the development of language skills, and hearing impairments can lead to poor academic and social … Continue reading

The trial, supported by CBR, follows promising evidence from preclinical studies suggesting that the infusion of human umbilical cord stem cells may help repair damaged cells in the inner ear in ways that could lead to hearing improvement.[iii] "As more children survive premature birth, we are observing increasing numbers of very young children with significant acquired hearing loss, and currently there are no therapies available for reversing that damage," says Linda Baumgartner M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS cert. AVT, the trial's Speech and Language Pathologist and hearing loss expert. James Baumgartner, MD, Surgical Director of Florida Hospital for Children's Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center and the study's principal investigator notes that "presently, the only treatment options for acquired sensorineural hearing loss are hearing aids or cochlear implants, neither of which actually repairs the damage. Using cord blood stem cells to help trigger the body's own repair mechanisms could provide a non-invasive therapeutic option that does not exist today." During the last 25 years, cord blood stem cells have been used in more than 30,000 transplants performed worldwide for the treatment of nearly 80 serious diseases and disorders in both adults and children. The evolution of stem cell therapies has paved the way for … Continue reading

Mesenchymal stem cells: weapons or dangers for cancer treatment?

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2014

Summary of "Mesenchymal stem cells: weapons or dangers for cancer treatment?" Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have attracted recent attention for their cell therapy potential, based in particular on their immunosuppressive properties, which have served as the basis for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Interestingly, MSC have been used in cell therapy strategies to deliver therapeutical genes. Cell therapy approaches taking advantages of MSC have been proposed, as MSC display a potential tropsim for tumors. However, all these strategies raise a series of questions about the safety of MSC, as MSC could enhance tumor growth and metastasis. This review summarizes recent findngs about MSC in carcinogenesis. Stem cell therapy following meniscus knee surgery may reduce pain, restore meniscus

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2014

Jan. 16, 2014 A single stem cell injection following meniscus knee surgery may provide pain relief and aid in meniscus regrowth, according to a novel study appearing in the January issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). More than one million knee arthroscopy procedures are performed each year in the U.S. primarily for the treatment of tears to the meniscus -- the wedge-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as "shock absorbers" between the thighbone and shinbone in the knee joint. In the first-of-its-kind study, "Adult Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) Delivered via Intra-Articular Injection to the Knee, Following Partial Medial Meniscectomy," most patients who received a single injection of adult stem cells following the surgical removal of all or part of a torn meniscus, reported a significant reduction in pain. Some patients?24 percent of one MSC group and 6 percent of another?experienced at least a 15 percent increase in meniscal volume at one year. There was no additional increase in meniscal volume at year two. "The results demonstrated that high doses of mesenchymal stem cells can be safely delivered in a concentrated manner to a knee joint without abnormal tissue formation," said lead study author C. Thomas … Continue reading

Push for autism insurance reform in Kan.

"We don't go out as a family to restaurants. We've tried that and there has been explosions," Claires father Doug Judah said. "My daughter needs a lot of help being fed. Deal wants state insurance to cover autism treatment

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2014

ATLANTA Gov. Nathan Deal has proposed the state employee health plan cover treatment of autism, a move applauded by advocates who say early intervention can improve behavior and quality of life. In his budget proposal announced this week, Deal said he would set aside $2.4 million for the coverage. Dozens of other states have passed legislation compelling insurers to provide for the treatments, which can be costly but effective. Research has shown early intervention treatments can prevent or greatly minimize some of the associated disabilities of autism. Considering autism is a neurological disorder, it should be covered under any health plan, Haynes Kaufman, a teacher at Gainesville Middle School who has a 15-year-old autistic son, told The Times. It should never have been excluded from any health plans. Kaufman, however, wont benefit from Deals proposal because her child is already covered under a Medicaid waiver. Its a day late and a dollar short for us, she said, but added that she hopes other public school teachers she knows who also have autistic children will be able to get the coverage they need. Jill Klink, a contracted speech pathologist for Gainesville City Schools who has a 7-year-old autistic son, said the … Continue reading

The network is one of 25 regional stroke centers across the country funded by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Trials Network (NIH StrokeNet), announced by the National Institutes of Health in December 2013. As a regional stroke center, the New York Stroke Trials Network of Columbia and Cornell will run NIH-sponsored clinical trials in stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and stroke recovery. The center received five-year funding, beginning with $250,000 per year over the first three years for research costs and the training of stroke clinical researchers. The NIH selected centers that had experience in stroke research, documented ability to recruit stroke patients into clinical trials, and access to all specialties involved in stroke care. "For the first time, the three main facets of comprehensive stroke care--stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and stroke recovery … Continue reading
