What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy? As you age, you may begin to notice that your body and mind do not function as they did when you were in your twenties. Your thinking might have slowed, and you tire more easily. You might have trouble sleeping, performing sexually, or have trouble losing weight and maintaining your strength. Most people think this is natural, that aging always comes with medical symptoms like fatigue, low energy, loss of motivation, depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, loss of memory or loss of concentration. But this isnt true! These symptoms are not just a part of getting older and you dont have to live with these symptoms of aging anymore! For many people, the symptoms of aging are actually caused by declining hormone levels, which begin to drop as early as your thirties. Fortunately, this can be corrected with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT. Some of the many benefits of BHRT are listed below. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy will reverse all symptoms of hormone imbalance and return you to your optimal physical, sexual, mental, and emotional health of your 20s and 30s. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the science of modulating hormone levels in order … Continue reading

Pioneering work on Shropshire border to help sick animals

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2014

From the outside it is just another building but inside a brick barn on the Shropshire border is one of only two laboratories in the world undertaking pioneering animal stem cell research. Scientists at the Veterinary Tissue Bank at Bryn Kinalt, near Chirk, have started carrying out the work in recent months alongside the tissue growth research which they have been doing since the centre opened about four years ago. Three animals have been helped out in recent months due to stem cell research on live animals, which is being carried out to help pets suffering with conditions such as arthritis. Vets Peter Myint and John Innes, who set up the tissue bank, have appealed for pet owners to agree to allow their animals to be donors when they die to help other creatures still alive. They have claimed that a donation of tissue cells from one animal could help up to 50 others. Under the scheme pet owners are given a tissue donor card for their pet cats or dogs much like the organ donor cards that millions of people choose to carry with themselves. Inside the lab there is not an animal in sight. Samples of tissue are … Continue reading

DNA sequencer raises doctors’ hopes for personalized medicine

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2014

Among the many stents, surgical clamps, pumps and other medical devices that have recently come before the Food and Drug Administration for clearance, none has excited the widespread hopes of physicians and researchers like a machine called the Illumina MiSeqDx. This compact DNA sequencer has the potential to change the way doctors care for patients by making personalized medicine a reality, experts say. "It's about time," said Michael Snyder, director of the Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine. Physicians who rely on genetic tests to guide their patients' treatment have had to order scans that reveal only small parts of a patient's genome, as if peeking through a keyhole, Snyder said: "Why would you study just a few genes when you can see the whole thing?" Back in 2000, when the Human Genome Project completed its first draft of the 3 billion base pairs that make up a person's DNA, the effort took a full decade and cost close to $100 million. The Illumina MiSeqDx can pull off the same feat in about a day for less than $5,000 and the results will be more accurate, two of the nation's top physicians gushed in the New England Journal of … Continue reading

Public Opinion Generally Supports Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2014

January 3, 2014 Rebekah Eliason for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online Early reports indicate that lay opinions regarding stem cell research with stem cells made from skin or other tissues, known as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), are generally positive, despite several ethical concerns. Regardless of personal benefit, most patients indicated during focus group discussions that they would be will to participate in iPSC. When considering donating tissue, patients raised concern regarding consent, privacy and transparency. Jeremy Sugarman, senior author and the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine at the John Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, said, Bioethicists, as well as stem cell researchers and policy-makers, have discussed the ethical issues of induced pluripotent stem cells at length, but we didnt have any systematic information about what patients think about these issues, and that is a huge part of the equation if the potential of this research is to be fully realized. Somewhat taking the edge off of the controversy is the fact that iPSCs do not require the destruction of a human embryo. Using iPSCs in research is extremely valuable in the development of new drugs, disease study and may help develop medical treatments. Although still far off, … Continue reading

Matthew unlocks the iPad for blind and partially-sighted

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2014

3 Jan 2014 19:00 Businessman's Blindability training helps disabled people to use tablet devices Blind businessman Matthew Carr has launched a unique firm offering key guidance on how to use an iPad for fellow sight-loss sufferers. The Rowley Regis 30-year-olds company, Blindability, provides specialist training for partially-sighted and blind people in how to make full use of iPads and other IT devices. The disabled Black Country man, registered blind in 2007 due to retinitis pigmentosa, which kills eye-cells, identified a niche in the market when he realised there was no specialist IT training for blind and partially-sighted people. Putting it simply, no-one else does what I do and there are lots of people that need my help, Matthew said. The iPad is a great tool to aid learning, independence and communication for people who are blind and partially-sighted, hearing-impaired and for people with serious physical disabilities. The iPad has a number of settings and applications that make it incredibly useful for disabled people. I provide training to teaching and support staff in schools as well as individuals on how to use the iPad, along with the accessibility features it contains. With calls coming in all the time, I think Im … Continue reading
