Published on November 7, 2013. For those of us effected by osteoarthritis we know the impact it can have on quality of life. The research surrounding an effective treatment for osteoarthritis has yet to find an approved pharmacological intervention, biologic therapy or procedure that prevents the progressive destruction of the osteoarthritis joint. Stem cell injections for osteoarthritis(your own stem cells) can help maintenance healthy tissues by acting as repair cells or to reduce inflammation. The injection of Mesenchymal stem cells has produced promising outcomes in preclinical models of joint disease. (1) In dealing with knee osteoarthritis, research notes that conventional treatments for osteoarthritis have demonstrated only modest clinical benefits and without cartilage repair. However, what research is also confirming is that stem cell therapies have shown encouraging results. They have confirmed feasibility and safety and strong indications of clinical efficacy were identified. Patients exhibited rapid and progressive improvement. . . Stem Cell therapy may be a valid alternative treatment for chronic knee osteoarthritis. The intervention is simple, does not require hospitalization or surgery, provides pain relief, and significantly improves cartilage quality. (2) If you suffer from crippling, degenerative joint disease stem cell therapy may be the breakthrough treatment you are … Continue reading

New physicians’ office building opens next to Hoke hospital

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2014

RAEFORD - The doctors are in. Physicians began seeing patients in the primary care and cardiology office at FirstHealth of the Carolinas' new Physician Offices & Specialty Services building in Hoke County last month. Dr. Mahalia R. Guerrier, an internist, and Dr. Vicki Hardy, who practices family medicine, anchor the primary care practice. Dr. Debbie R. Thomasson handles the cardiology section of the practice. The 20,000-square-foot facility, which adjoins FirstHealth's Hoke County branch of Moore Regional Hospital, will eventually house offices for several specialties once the months-long move-in is complete later this year. "In moving here, we're closer to the hospital, so I can go back and forth to the hospital and can take care of things that have to be done at the hospital more easily," Thomasson said Thursday. She said driving to and from facilities for tests and other procedures can disrupt flow and take time away from patients. The location also makes access to patients easier for the doctors, Guerrier said. "We can work in here, and we can still follow a patient over there," Guerrier said of patients admitted at the hospital. "If there's an issue, they can easily call us here, and we can go … Continue reading

Mauro Fermariello/Science Photo Library Ouch, be gone Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto have identified two proteins that could form the basis of a test to diagnose male infertility by identifying whether sperm is present in seminal fluid. This would be a drastic improvement over current methods: expensive genetic tests or sperm retrieval procedures and biopsies that require inserting needles into the testicles, which can be uncomfortable and unsuccessful. The new test could be available within two years. The Arugs … Continue reading

Edible batteries to power pacemakers + more

Posted: Published on January 2nd, 2014

This weeks Wearable Tech roundup features edible batteries, 3D-printed eye cells, and a pacemaker the size of a pill. Advancements in medicine have given birth to ingestible diagnostics, tools like tiny cameras that can uncover cancer in your digestive track, or a pill that can monitor if you are adhering to your medication plan. There are also implants to help your body functioning normally, but require a battery change every few years or so, which means the device will be surgically taken out then put back in. These minute devices also requires a source of power to function, but their own batteries may not last that long. So researchers have found a way to deliver safe amounts of electricity to these devices that can also be ingested. Edible batteries are made from the pigment of cuttlefish, which can discharge 10 microamperes of electricity for a period of five hours, with an ideal performance of 24 hours, as long as something ingested is likely to remain in the body. The melanin from the cuttlefish served as the anode in the studys aqueous sodium-ion battery, and manganese dioxide served as the cathode. The chemical reaction between the two produces the electric charge … Continue reading

A Vietnamese girl adopted by a Swiss family underwent a stem cell transplant last Friday, months after she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Joon Gremillet, 18, is under special care at the Geneva General Hospital with visits restricted to protect her from infections, given that her immune system drops close to zero, according to a post on the blog site Help Joon, which was opened to look for a matching donor by her adoptive father Patrick Gremillet, a senior program coordinator at the United Nations Development Program. Patrick received Joon from a maternity hospital in Hai Phong in northern Vietnam and she has grown up with the family, traveling through Laos, Thailand, US, Austria and France. Joon, who started her university studies last year in Geneva, was diagnosed with leukemia last May. She was hospitalized immediately and received chemotherapy before the search began for a bone marrow donor that considerably increases chances of survival. The father said a donor was a stressful issue as Joon was adopted and there was little chance of finding a matching donor in her current community. He said there are also few Asians, and Vietnamese in particular, who are enrolled in the international stem … Continue reading

Ridgewood man battling blood cancer needs bone marrow transplant

Posted: Published on January 2nd, 2014

RIDGEWOOD Its been almost two months since Ed Schwartz learned he has an aggressive form of blood cancer that could kill him. The 46-year-old environmentalist from Ridgewood needs a stem cell transplant to elevate his chances of surviving his acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis from 15- to 60-percent. Temple Beth Israel on Grove Street will host a donor drive on Sunday, aimed at finding possible matches for Schwartz, who has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments since learning of his cancer. Acute myeloid leukemia is a cancer that attacks the blood-forming tissue of the bone marrow. During the donor drive, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., healthy people ages 18 to 44 will undergo a cheek swab. Volunteers must be willing to donate to any patient. Theres a catch, though: An Ashkenazi Jewish man, Schwartz needs to find a match who is also of Russian, Hungarian and Polish decent. Thats very specific, but we recently learned that out of the 22 million on the donor registry, theres not a single match for me, Schwartz said. People have been so supportive these last two months, and Im just hoping we get a good turnout, he added, because the more donors you get, … Continue reading

Hagop Semerjian is a picture of good health. PHOTO COURTESY OF HEIDI RAKER GOLDSTEIN Hagop 'Jack' Semerjian, far right, with his family at Semerjian Shoes in Westwood. Originally from Syria, the family came to the United States in the mid 2000s so Jack could get a stem cell transplant to cure him of a rare immune disorder. The family eventually settled in Westwood where they made a home and started their family business. From left: Karni, Onnig, the owner, Ani and Hagop Semerjian. While standing slightly shorter than the average 18-year-old boy, his father, Onnig, who is the owner of Westwood's Semerjian Shoes on Center Avenue, says he still has some growing to do. Last month, he finished his last round of medications, which included antibiotics that he had been taking all of his life to combat a rare hereditary immune disorder that left him sick for most of his childhood. "It's surreal," he says of no longer having to take medication. "I've been on it so long. I used to always go to the hospital..." Hagop, whom his peers call Jack, pulls his hood back upon entering the store, fashioned with modernized-style dcor, on the rainy afternoon of Dec. … Continue reading

Study finds patients give 'broad endorsement' to stem cell research

Posted: Published on January 2nd, 2014

10 hours ago In an early indication of lay opinions on research with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are stem cells made from skin or other tissues, a new study by bioethicists at Johns Hopkins University indicates that despite some ethical concerns, patients give the research "broad endorsement". During focus group discussions patients were largely in favor of participating in iPSC research even if personal benefit was unlikely, though they raised concerns about consent, privacy and transparency when considering donating tissue for this research. The bioethicists report their findings in the journal Cell Stem Cell. "Bioethicists, as well as stem cell researchers and policy-makers, have discussed the ethical issues of induced pluripotent stem cells at length, but we didn't have any systematic information about what patients think about these issues, and that is a huge part of the equation if the potential of this research is to be fully realized," says Jeremy Sugarman, the senior author of the report and the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. Unlike human embryonic stem cells, iPSCs are derived without destroying a human embryo. Research with human iPSCs is valuable for developing new … Continue reading
