Why induced comas help injured brains

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2013

By Elizabeth Landau, CNN updated 3:40 PM EST, Mon December 30, 2013 STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher suffered severe head trauma in a skiing accident and arrived at a French hospital in a coma. To promote healing after Sunday's accident, doctors are keeping the German driver in a medically induced coma and lowered his body temperature, said Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, chief anesthesiologist at University Hospital Center of Grenoble, France, where the driver is being treated. Traumatic brain injury causes the brain to swell, just like the inflammation that happens when you injure an elbow or knee. But because the brain is trapped inside your skull, pressure on the brain increases and restricts a lot of critical functions, such as blood supply, said Dr. David Wright, director of emergency neurosciences in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. "You're worried because the skull is a closed space," said Dr. Nicholas Schiff, professor of neurology and neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College. "As the brain starts to expand, the only place it has to go is down and out, and you damage the brain stem. You can die. You can create a lot … Continue reading

FDA Rejects French MS Drug For ‘Serious Adverse Effects’

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2013

December 30, 2013 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rejected French drugmaker Sanofis multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment called Lemtrada, the company announced on Monday. The rejection is considered a serious blow to the company, which had the drug recently approved by other regulatory bodies. The FDA did not approve the drug on the grounds that the Sanofi-owned developer Genzyme had not demonstrated that its medical benefits offset its serious adverse effects, Sanofi said in a statement. FDA has also taken the position that one or more additional active comparator clinical trials of different design and execution are needed prior to the approval of Lemtrada, the company added. Sanofi went on to say that it disagreed with the FDA ruling and planned to appeal it.The same drug was approved by EU regulators in September as well as by Canadian and Australian regulators more recently. Alemtuzumab, the active ingredient in the drug, targets a specific immune system protein and reorganizes immune system cells. The result is a significant suppression of inflammatory activity in patients with MS. Clinical trials showed that alemtuzumab was better than beta-interferons, a standard drug for relapsing-remitting MS. Some clinical evidence even found that it slowed the progression … Continue reading

US regulators reject Sanofi’s MS treatment

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2013

The FDA ruling could impact the value of Sanofi's Genzyme takeover, since the latter's shareholders had received so-called contingent value rights (CVRs) entitling them to future payments of up to $14 a share if certain goals were met. Sanofi said on Monday it did not expect to meet the CVR milestone of U.S. approval for Lemtrada by the end of March. Other milestones are related to the drug's sales and would likely be hard to reach without the U.S. market. Analysts on average had expected Lemtrada to generate annual sales of $707 million by 2018, according to forecasts compiled by Thomson Reuters. "Genzyme's takeover was about catching up in biologics, having a greater footprint in the United States, and also largely for Lemtrada,'' said Eric Le Berrigaud, analyst at Bryan Garnier & Co. "This is unquestionably a setback, as without a U.S. market such a product doesn't have the same potential.'' Costly Process The brokerage, which had forecast peak Lemtrada sales of $400 million in the United States, said it was scrapping the U.S. market from its forecasts. It argued it would take Sanofi at least three years to conduct the studies demanded by the FDA, and that, given an … Continue reading

Seven Ottawa-area residents were among 90 new appointments to the Order of Canada, announced Monday by Governor General David Johnston. Three Ottawans were among the 25 appointments of the Officer title, the honours second highest ranking, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement and merit of a high degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large. This includes Dr. Peter Tugwell for his contributions as an epidemiologist reducing global disparities in health care access. Tugwell, director of the Centre for Global Health at the University of Ottawa, said he has developed a group which is focusing on solving inequities in health care as it relates to factors of wealth, in addition to location, race, occupation and employment status, gender, religion, education, socio-economic status, and social capital. I worked in Nigeria for three years before I came to Canada in the early 1970s and it was quite dramatic differences between the illnesses that the rich and the poor had, said Tugwell, 69. I guess my peers indicating some support is wonderful, but its more important that its in support of the activities that Im responsible for working for. Plantar Fasciitis Now Being Treated With Stem Cells

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2013

Plantar fasciitis, a chronic pain condition involving the sole of the foot, is now being treated using regenerative medicine like stem cell therapy, and offering the first form of real relief for many sufferers. Plantar fasciitis affects millions of Americans, and is a condition in which the plantar fascia the thick tissue covering the sole of the foot is inflamed, causing severe pain on the bottom of the foot, and impeding activities such as running and walking. The plantar fascia tissue is what connects the heel bone to the toes, thus creating the arch of the foot. Traditional treatments for the debilitating injury have offered some relief in recent years through the use of physical therapy, NSAIDS, and steroid injections. However, these types of pain relief develop slowly over time, and are not an effective way to truly treat the problem. Stem cell therapy is going beyond these typical treatments, treating the root cause of the issue, and are often able to alleviate pain more quickly and with longer-lasting results. Clinics in Arizona and California are just two examples of offices now offering stem cell injections of adult bone marrow and both fat- and amniotic-derived materials. Board certified pain management … Continue reading

Treatment of Non Union of Long Bone Fractures by Autologous …

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2013

Primary Outcome Measures: Secondary Outcome Measures: Treatment of nonunion, delayed union and malunion fractures of long bones remains problematic. The definition of nonunion is a failure of the fracture to heal in six months in a patient in whom progressive repair had not been observed radiographically between the third and sixth month after the fracture. Nonunion is a serious complication of a fracture, occurring in 2-10% of patients, as it is associated with high economic and health burden. Many cases are subsequently approached by multiple surgical and nonsurgical modalities. Various devices, under the name of "bone growth stimulators" have been used to enhance healing of the fracture. Recent studies, demonstrated the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells in regeneration of bone and cartilage tissue. In this study percutaneous injection of mesenchymal stem cells to the site of fracture is performed as an outpatient procedure or during an operative exposure to evaluate its efficacy in enhancing bone regeneration. In the case of small size of bone gap, mesenchymal stem cells are injected into the callus of fracture site through an outpatient procedure under the guide of fluoroscopy. If there is a large bone gap, through a surgical management, mesenchymal stem cells seeded … Continue reading

In 2013, doctors nationwide diagnosed 49,000 people with Leukemia. This past April, Cathy Habeeb Sheehan, of Boxford, was one of them. Last June, she had a sibling stem cell transplant. However, it failed and her only other brother is not a match. Currently, there is no donor match in the National Register. She is in need of a second stem cell transplant. Latitude Sports Club in Methuen is hosting a stem cell donor drive in January. Her friends and family are asking for people to volunteer to be tested as a possible donor match. Sheehan is a mother of two daughters and a son. In her spare time, shes a spin instructor at Latitude Sports Club in Salisbury. In the past Latitude has helped Sheehan with other stem cell donor drives but no match was found. The family is beside themselves, family friend Ruth Ann LeHane said. LeHane has worked for Sheehans mother for more than 30 years. The ideal match for Sheehan is someone in between 18 and 44 years old and is in good health.
