London, GB (PRWEB) December 29, 2013 Dr. Allens Devices help people to stay healthy now and in The New Year by providing the effective treatment for serious cardiovascular diseases, which previously have been impossible to treat, such as coronary and cerebrovascular diseases. The news published recently in the Science Daily emphasises the importance of keeping the body healthy to prevent heart disease and stroke, which are two of the top killers of Americans and pose a significant threat to millions of others, Fine Treatment reveals. According to the article, Heart Disease, Stroke Continue to Threaten US Health on December 18, 2013, in the Science Daily, The American Heart Association gauges the cardiovascular health of the nation by tracking seven key health factors and behaviors that increase risks for heart disease and stroke, which are: not smoking, physical activity, healthy diet, body weight, and control of cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. These 7 key factors support general health but when a disease starts in the heart or brain at the capillary level it is impossible to terminate this problem with any of these features, notes Dr. Simon Allen. The only way to tackle the cause of the cardiovascular disease is … Continue reading

Stroke victims offered treatments that may improve their speech

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2013

Published:Thursday, October 12, 2000 Updated:Thursday, March 3, 2011 16:03 An ETSU faculty member is now offering a new treatment for stroke victims who have difficulties speaking or understanding words. Dr. Lee Ennis, assistant professor, and graduate students of the College of Public and Allied Health primarily work with patients who show word retrieval failure. These patients may know what an object is but cannot give its proper name. The staff uses cues to help the patients remember the word for the object that is being shown. Ennis explained the process using the following examples: Some cues involve the instructor sounding the first letter of the proper word. The instructor would sound the letter "c" to cue the patient to say the word "coke." Rhyming is also used as a cue to help patients retrieve the proper word. The instructor may say, "This sounds like poke." Other cues are categorical and relational. To use a categorical cue, the instructor may say, "This is a type of beverage." A relational cue may be, "Pepsi is a similar drink." Patients are also given work to continue the therapy at home. If the person has difficulty understanding what people say, he/she may be assigned … Continue reading

Inosine Treatment Found to Elevate Urate Levels to Slow Parkinson’s

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2013

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 29, 2013 A two-year clinical trial conducted by a consortium led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard School of Public Health, and the University of Rochester has found that the nutritional supplement inosine successfully raised levels of the antioxidant urate without producing serious side effects. Several previous studies have suggested that urate elevation may reduce the risk of Parkinsons disease or slow its progression, according to researchers. This study provided clear evidence that, in people with early Parkinson disease, inosine treatment can safely elevate urate levels in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid for months or years, says Michael Schwarzschild, MD, PhD, principal investigator and a neurologist. We know that urate has neuroprotective properties in animal models, and an unusual convergence of human studies suggested its possible use as a disease-modifying strategy in Parkinsons; so the positive results of this trial are very encouraging. Characterized by tremors, rigidity, difficulty walking and other symptoms, Parkinson disease is caused by the destruction of brain cells that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine. While current treatments can partially relieve symptoms, no therapy has been shown to alleviate the underlying loss of … Continue reading

Pushing her way through the obstacles

Orangeville Banner Despite having heard doctors rule it out, Ashlyn Coogan isnt going to let cerebral palsy or epilepsy stop her from learning how to walk. While her mother, Tammy, says the five-year-old Orangeville girl has been blessed with a great sense of humour, Ashlyn can also be a tad bit manipulative. She knows how to work people, Tammy laughed. Shell get them to do things for her. Ashlyn must have been speaking to someone with the Orangeville chapter of the Knights of Columbus. The service club has adopted Ashlyn and the Coogan family for its fifth annual Charity Motorcycle Ride next month. The Knights of Columbus had previously raised money for the families of Kaitlin Bolton and Jennifer Flynn. Tammy has seen the positive effect that has had on those families. We feel blessed that theyd accept us, she said. Its nice that there is a community service out there that is willing to help out local families. Just hearing about the hurdles the Coogan family has been forced to overcome made it an easy decision, explained Terry Barrett, grand knight for the Orangeville chapter of the Knights of Columbus. While Ashlyn has both quadriplegia spastic cerebral palsy and … Continue reading

New device allows scientists to operate on living cells

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2013

LONDON: Scientists have developed a device that can take a "biopsy" of a living cell, sampling minute volumes of its contents without killing it. The new tool, called a nanobiopsy, uses a robotic glass nanopipette to pierce the cell membrane and extract a volume of around 50 femtolitres, around one per cent of the cell's contents. It will allow scientists to take samples repeatedly, to study the progression of disease at a molecular level in an individual cell. It can also be used to deliver material into cells, opening up ways to reprogramme diseased cells. "This is like doing surgery on individual cells," said Dr Paolo Actis, from the department of medicine at Imperial College, London, who developed the technology with colleagues at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "This technology will be extremely useful for research in many areas. You could use it to dynamically study how cancer cells are different from healthy cells, or look at how brain cells are affected by Alzheimer's disease. The possibilities are immense," Actis said. To get inside the cell, the nanopipette is plunged downwards about one micrometre to pierce the cell membrane. Applying a voltage across the tip makes fluid flow into … Continue reading

‘Be the Match’ event scheduled for Mason man needing stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2013

Sam Shockey had been eagerly waiting to celebrate the holiday season with his family and to watch the excitement on his two young sons faces as they open presents on Christmas morning. But in early December he was diagnosed with Acute NK Leukemia a rare, aggressive and recurrent form of cancer, and he spent Christmas in the hospital clinging to life. Shockey, a Mason resident, is in dire need of a stem cell transplant; he could die without it, his wife Kimber Shockey said, adding that they are looking for a donor. We knew this was pretty severe, very serious, she said. He made videos to leave for the kids, so they would remember his voice, and we got our affairs in order. Still, the family has not given up hope; efforts are underway to find a donor. Kimber Shockey is helping organize a Be The Match event today in hopes of finding a donor for her husband and others who have a similar illness. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Trenton Fishing Club, 225 Potter Ave., Trenton. Anyone who attends can have the inside of their cheeks swabbed and entered into a … Continue reading

Dr. Andrew Jacono Reviews New Jaw Augmentation Trend for Men

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 27, 2013 Whats the next big thing in male cosmetic surgery? Andrew Jacono, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of the New York Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, reviews the forthcoming trend for men in 2014 jaw augmentation. Its no secret that aesthetic plastic surgery is quickly gaining favor among the male population in the United States according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men had almost one million cosmetic procedures in 2012. This number marks an increase of over 106 percent from 1997, and Dr. Jacono anticipates that it will continue to grow. While ASAPS reports that the top five surgical procedures for men last year were liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast reduction to treat enlarged male breast, and otoplasty (ear surgery), Dr. Jacono reports a rise in men seeking gonial angle (jawline) implants in his practice. The driving factor behind the trend is Americans fixation on celebrity culture, says Dr. Jacono. Youll notice that the worlds most handsome celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and David Beckham, have one thing in common a very angular jawline. Due to the constant exposure of these celebs in entertainment weeklies, gossip sites … Continue reading
