New Diabetes-Related Genetic Risk Factor Discovered

December 26, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online A previously undetected genetic risk factor could help explain why there is an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes among Mexican and other Latin American populations, according to a new study published online Wednesday in the journal Nature. In the study, an international team of researchers known as the SIGMA (Slim Initiative in Genomic Medicine for the Americas) Type 2 Diabetes Consortium performed the largest genetic study to date in people of Mexican and Mexican-American descent. They discovered that people who had the higher-risk version of the gene SLC16A11 could be 25 percent more likely to have diabetes than those lacking said gene. Furthermore, individuals who inherit copies from both patents are 50 percent more likely to have diabetes. The higher-risk version has been found in up to half of people with recent Native American ancestry (including Latin Americans) as well as 20 percent of East Asians, and elevated frequency of SLC16A11 in Latin American could account for up to one-fifth of the populations increased prevalence of diabetes, the authors explained. Wednesday, December 25, 2013 Last updated: Thursday December 26, 2013, 4:36 PM RIDGEWOOD A donor registration drive for a 22-year-old village resident battling Hodgkins lymphoma attracted more than 500 people on Saturday. Patrice Foresman of Montvales Community Blood Services said it was one of the most successful drives in which she has ever participated. The four-hour drive, which was held in Village Hall, had to be extended an hour to accommodate everyone. The purpose was to find a match for Anthony Daniels, who was diagnosed at age 20 and has twice been in remission. It was a sweeping success, due to the tireless efforts of the Daniels family and all the volunteers who wanted to be part of something really important, Foresman said Monday after shipping the samples to Minnesota for analysis. Hodgkins lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system that attacks white blood cells. Daniels needs a bone marrow stem-cell transplant a procedure he described as a last resort. In six weeks, the Daniels family should know if Saturdays drive yielded a potential donor for Anthony. Patient Receives First-Ever Gene Therapy for Parkinson's at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center Historic Procedure Also Marks First In Vivo Gene Therapy in Adult Brain NEW YORK (Aug 20, 2003) Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell performed the world's first gene therapy for Parkinson's disease on a 55-year-old New York man on Monday, August 18. The historic surgery, which also marked the first-ever in vivo gene therapy in the brain for an adult neurological disease, was part of a Phase I clinical trial approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October 2002. The five-hour procedure was performed by Dr. Michael G. Kaplitt, Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.
