Animal research brings hope to the girl whose skin never heals …

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2013

On Friday the BBC broadcast a moving report about a young girl named Sohana Collins, who suffers from the painful and life threatening genetic disorder epidermolysis bullosa (EB), caused by mutations in the type VII collagen gene (Col7a1). The report also included an interview with Prof John McGrath, Professor of Molecular dermatology at Kings College London, who is leading a clinical trial EBSTEM of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for EB that Sohana is part of, who spoke about the potential for this therapy to help people with EB. Sohana Collins, who is participating in the EBSTEM trial. Image: BBC News Type VII collagen (col7) is a key component of the basement membrane of the skin, a layer of protein structures that acts as a kind of cement that binds the outermost layer of the skin the epidermis to the underlying dermal layer, and lack of clo7 leads to the two layers to move independently of each other. This shearing movement at the dermal-epidermal junction hasthe result that even the slightest injury can lead to blisters and sores, and people with EB have a very high risk of developing skin cancers. The EBSTEMtrial seeks to determine if infused mesenchymal stem cells … Continue reading

Emergency treatment for stroke depends on whether you're having an ischemic stroke blocking an artery the most common kind or a hemorrhagic stroke involving bleeding into the brain. Ischemic strokeTo treat an ischemic stroke, doctors must quickly restore blood flow to your brain. Emergency treatment with medications. Therapy with clot-busting drugs (thrombolytics) must start within 4.5 hours if they are given into the vein and the sooner, the better. Quick treatment not only improves your chances of survival but also may reduce the complications from your stroke. You may be given: Aspirin. Aspirin, an anti-thrombotic drug, is an immediate treatment after an ischemic stroke to reduce the likelihood of having another stroke. Aspirin prevents blood clots from forming. In the emergency room, you may be given a dose of aspirin. The dose may vary, but if you already take a daily aspirin for its blood-thinning effect, you may want to make a note of that on an emergency medical card so doctors will know if you've already taken some aspirin. Other blood-thinning drugs, such as heparin, also may be given, … Continue reading

Spinal injury treatment in dogs – Iowa State Daily: News

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2013

Dogs with certain spinal injuries are receiving experimental treatment at Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Nicholas Jeffery, professor of veterinary clinical sciences, has been conducting the research.Jeffery, who is from the United Kingdom, said he has always had an interest in spinal cord treatment. He began developing the project in the U.K. before he came to Iowa State. While at Iowa State, he was able to set up the project which began in July 2013. Theres a lot of potential in things here, Jeffery said. About 60 dogs will participate in the project, which will last about three years, Jeffry said. He uses the Internet to find dogs to participate in the trial, including a website called Dodgers List. The trial is also publicized. Jeffery said eligible dogs are ones that have been paralyzed in both hind legs for three months. The trial is also limited to smaller dogs. The dogs will all eventually be injected with a drug that breaks down the scar tissue around the spinal cord, which prevents the making of new connections. Because the trial is an experiment, it is conducted in a double blind fashion where only Jeffery will know what he is … Continue reading

Embryonic stem cell research falls out of favor as scientists …

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2013

Pro-life groups, which are eager to end research that destroys human embryos, are taking heart that funding decisions in two of the nations most socially liberal states are going their way. Money talks, said Gene Tarne, author of papers for the Charlotte Lozier Institute that find that the bulk of stem cell funding grants in California and Maryland are moving toward ethical research that doesnt use human embryos. The shift looks like a sea change from when state funding strongly favored research from embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells, which are taken from the placenta, umbilical cord and some mature tissues and do not kill human embryos. However, the hunt for cures for diseases, along with federal and private funding for embryonic stem cell research, virtually guarantees that embryonic stem cell research and the moral battles over it are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. The World Stem Cell Summit this week in San Diego promises to share updates on a complete 360 view of the stem-cell field and says no type of research should be excluded. The patient community is not so concerned about the source of the cell it is all about developing effective treatments, said … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant: All – MayoClinic.com

A single copy of this article may be reprinted for personal, noncommercial use only. A stem cell (blood or marrow) transplant is the infusion, or injection, of healthy stem cells into your body to replace damaged or diseased stem cells. A stem cell transplant may be necessary if your bone marrow stops working and doesn't produce enough healthy stem cells. A stem cell transplant also may be performed if high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given in the treatment of blood disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma. A stem cell transplant can help your body make enough healthy white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets, and reduce your risk of life-threatening infections, anemia and bleeding. Although the procedure to replenish your body's supply of healthy blood-forming cells is generally called a stem cell transplant, it's also known as a bone marrow transplant, peripheral blood stem cell transplant or an umbilical cord blood transplant, depending on the source of the stem cells. Stem cell transplants can use cells from your own body (autologous stem cell transplant), from a donor (allogeneic stem cell transplant) or from an identical twin (syngeneic transplant). Stem cell transplants are used to treat people … Continue reading
