Cerebral Palsy – Nemours: Kids Health

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2013

Kids with CP have varying degrees of physical disability. Some have only mild impairment, while others are severely affected. This depends on the extent of the damage to the brain. For example, brain damage can be very limited, affecting only the part of the brain that controls walking, or can be much more extensive, affecting muscle control of the entire body. The brain damage that causes CP can also affect other brain functions, and can lead to other medical issues. Associated medical problems may include visual impairment or blindness, hearing loss, food aspiration (the sucking of food or fluid into the lungs), gastroesophageal reflux (spitting up), speech problems, drooling, tooth decay, sleep disorders, osteoporosis (weak, brittle bones), and behavior problems. Seizures, speech and communication problems, and mental retardation are more common among kids with the most severe forms of CP. Many have problems that may require ongoing therapy and devices such as braces or wheelchairs. Currently there's no cure for cerebral palsy, but a variety of resources and therapies can provide help and improve the quality of life for kids with CP. Different kinds of therapy can help them achieve maximum potential in growth and development. As soon as CP … Continue reading

Head Injury and Concussion Treatment – About.com Sports Medicine

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2013

Any athlete can wind up with a head injury such as a concussion. A fall, a collision or a blow to the head can result in a minor headache or a major head trauma. But because it's difficult to determine the severity of any head injury without a medical evaluation, it's important to obtain medical treatment for any head injury. Any blow to the head during sports--even those that appear minor--can result in a serious head injury, particularly if the athlete continues playing sports. In fact, it's not uncommon for the warning signs or symptoms of a head injury to be delayed for several hours or even days after the initial head trauma. In some cases, delaying head injury treatment can have serious, and even life-threatening consequences. If you suspect a head injury in yourself or someone you're with, even if you don't see any significant signs or symptoms, be safe, and follow these head injury treatment guidelines. Information on Stem Cell Research: National Institute of …

Introduction Stem Cells are unique in that they have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body, including brain cells, but they also retain the ability to produce more stem cells, a process termed self renewal. There are multiple types of stem cell, such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and adult or somatic stem cells. While various stem cells can share similar properties there are differences as well. For example, ES cells are able to differentiate into any type of cell, whereas adult stem cells are more restricted in their potential. The promise of all stem cells for use in future therapies is exciting, but significant technical hurdles remain that will only be overcome through years of intensive research. The NINDS supports a diverse array of research on almost all stem cells, from studies of the basic biology of stem cells in the developing and adult mammalian brain to studies focusing on nervous system disorders such as ALS or spinal cord injury. For example, investigators are looking at how ES cells can be used to derive dopamine-producing neurons that might alleviate symptoms in patients with Parkinsons disease or how somatic stem … Continue reading

We stand at the threshold of a new and exciting medicine of Regeneration where transplants of stem cells can potentially restore function to injured, diseased and debilitated tissues and organs. Embryonic-like stem cells found in umbilical cord blood! Umbilical cord blood was first used for blood and immune system disorders about 18 years ago.For the past several years, new possibilities for their use in a wider variety of health conditions, genetic disorders and anti-aging treatmentshave beengaining support with various multipotent stem cells and progenitor cells being discovered in the cord blood. In fact, embryonic-like stem cells have actually been found in umbilical cord blood and are beingused in clinical researchnow for various neurological disorders outside the United States. Dr. Colin McGuckin and associates from the U.K. have published preliminary findings on these embryonic-like stem cells. Whether the health challenge is Alzheimer's Disease, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injuries, Parkinson's Disease, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Blindness or Immune Deficiencies, the results of preliminary animal and human studies have been very promising. With each passing year, the field is growing exponentially and we invite you to find out more about this exciting new field of regenerative medicine. This website is … Continue reading

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT IGERT HIGHLIGHT NSF Renews IGERT Nanomedicine PhD Program! 2010-2015 We are pleased to announce that the IGERT Nanomedicine Program has been renewed for an additional term 2010-2015. The new $3.1M IGERT Nanomedicine project leverages the success of the current Nanomedicine program at Northeastern to establish a global research and educational partnership between collaborators at Northeastern, University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, Tuskegee University, collaborators at Harvard Medical School hospitals, and foreign partners including universities in Naples, Sao Paulo, York and Delhi. MISSION IGERT Nanomedicine Science and Technology is a new integrated doctoral education program in the emerging field of Nanomedicine, created with support from the National Cancer Institute and the National Science Foundation. The program aims to educate the next generation of scientists and technologists with the requisite skill sets to address scientific and engineering challenges, with the necessary business, ethical and global perspectives that will be needed in the rapidly emerging area of applying nanotechnology to human health. The program began at Northeastern University in 2005 with an NSF IGERT grant funded through the National Cancer Institute. The success of the program has since then led to an NSF funded IGERT renewal grant for the period 2010-2015 with … Continue reading

Retinitis Pigmentosa or RP – AllAboutVision.com

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2013

By Marilyn Haddrill Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a rare, inherited disease in which the light-sensitive retina of the eye slowly and progressively degenerates. Eventually, blindness results. When retinitis pigmentosa is suspected, visual field testing likely will be conducted during or after your routine eye exams to determine the extent of peripheral vision loss. Other specialized eye tests may be needed to determine whether you have lost night or color vision. The first signs of retinitis pigmentosa usually occur in early childhood, when both eyes typically are affected. Night vision can be poor, and the field of vision may begin to narrow. When RP first starts to appear, the light-sensing cells that are responsible for vision in dim light (rods) gradually deteriorate and seeing at night becomes more difficult. During later stages of retinitis pigmentosa, only a small area of central vision remains, along with slight peripheral vision. It's very difficult to predict the extent of vision loss or how fast it will progress when you have retinitis pigmentosa. Your eye doctor will monitor the health of your retinal cells and administer tests to determine how well you can see. At some point, you may be advised to drive only during … Continue reading
