Spinal Cord Injury Information

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2013

This website was created to help Spinal Cord Injury patients and their families and friends with up-to-date information about spinal cord injuries (SCI). We have a summary of the type of injury, its classification and prognosis based on the severity of the injury. We have also gathered vital information on coping with the personal and financial effects of a spinal cord injury, which may be difficult to deal with without the proper preparation. Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) occurs when a traumatic event results in damage to cells within the spinal cord or severs the nerve tracts that relay signals up and down the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries occur in approximately 12,000 to 15,000 people per year in the U.S. About 10,000 of these people are permanently paralyzed, and many of the rest die as a result of their injuries. Most spinal cord trauma occurs to young, healthy individuals. Males between 15 and 35 years old are most commonly affected. As a spinal cord injury is very serious it is very important to examine your medical treatment options. Stem Cell Therapy FAQ

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2013

We provide only the best source: Adipose Derived Stem Cells....we do not offer Bone Marrow harvested stem cells (see why above). The method of collecting bone marrow can be very painful andoften requires total or spinal anesthesia. In addition, the biggest drawback is the small amount of extracted mesenchymal cells available without expansion. Our Stem Cell Center uses a revolutionary new procedure where we extract and reintroduce the stem cells into the patient all within the same day and within the same facility. There is no culturing done with the autologous cells as we do not wish to change or manipulate the stem cells. They are kept in their natural state until they are reintroduced into the body. This is in direct contrast to bone marrow extraction and other methods which are used by foreign entities. Since we harvest from the most abundant source of stem cells, located within the patient's own fat-derived samples, we avoid the need to manipulate and multiply these autologous cells, thus helping to ensure their survival. Regenerative medicine is described as the creation of tissues that can repair, replace, or restore biological structures and/or functions that may be lacking due to congenital defects, aging, disease, … Continue reading

Retinitis pigmentosa: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2013

Retinitis pigmentosa is an eye disease in which there is damage to the retina. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye that converts light images to nerve signals and sends them to the brain. Retinitis pigmentosa can run in families. The disorder can be caused by a number of genetic defects. The cells controlling night vision (rods) are most likely to be affected. However, in some cases, retinal cone cells are damaged the most. The main sign of the disease is the presence of dark deposits in the retina. The main risk factor is a family history of retinitis pigmentosa. It is an uncommon condition affecting about 1 in 4,000 people in the United States. Symptoms often first appear in childhood, but severe vision problems do not usually develop until early adulthood. Tests to evaluate the retina: There is no effective treatment for this condition. Wearing sunglasses to protect the retina from ultraviolet light may help preserve vision. Some studies have suggested that treatment with antioxidants (such as high doses of vitamin A palmitate) may slow the disease. However, taking high doses of vitamin A can cause serious liver problems. The benefit of … Continue reading
