Stem Cell Injections – Valley Sports Physicians & Orthopedic …

One of the most exciting recent developments in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal conditions is the use of adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Drs. Tortland & Kozar were the first in New England to offer this treatment and they remain the region's leaders in office-based stem cell treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. Stem Cells are undifferentiated cells that have the potential to become other, more specialized types of cells. Stem cells are broadly categorized as either "embryonic" or "adult." As the name implies, embryonic stem cells are derived from human fetuses, whereas adult stem cells are obtained from, well, adults! Currently there are over 70 proven therapies using adult stem cells, while there are none using embryonic stem cells. This is in part because scientists have had tremendous difficulty controlling how embryonic stem cells differentiate; they have a nasty habit of causing tumor formation, including teratomas. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, do not suffer from this pitfall. Mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs, are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, including: osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells) and adipocytes (fat cells). This has been demonstrated in ex vivo cultures and in vitro or in … Continue reading

Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute Now Performing Back Pain Research …

Posted: Published on November 9th, 2013

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) November 08, 2013 The top stem cell injection clinic in Phoenix, Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute, is now offering a back pain research study with amniotic derived stem cell injections. The research project allows the treatment for back pain to be subsidized, with patients receiving the Phoenix stem cell treatment at a significantly lower cost than available at other clinics. For enrollment consideration, call (602) 507-6550. Back pain affects ninety percent of individuals at some point, with an unfortunate few developing chronic pain. Most pain management to date has involved treatments designed to mask pain, but not actually change the course of the condition. Stem cell therapy for back pain has the potential to alter arthritis while reducing pain as well. Amniotic derived stem cell injections do not involve fetal tissue or embryonic stem cells, so there are no ethical concerns. The material is processed at an FDA regulated lab, and has been used over 10,000 times in the US with no adverse events noted. For the stem cell back pain research study at Arizona Pain, the project is prospective but nor randomized, so each patient obtains the stem cell injection. The treatments are administered by Double … Continue reading

Initial treatment for a stroke happens in the hospital. The sooner you get treatment, the better. The worst damage from a stroke often occurs within the first few hours. The faster you receive treatment, the less damage will occur. Your treatment will depend on whether the stroke is caused by a blood clot (ischemic) or by bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic). Treatment focuses on restoring blood flow for an ischemic stroke or controlling bleeding for a hemorrhagic stroke. Before starting treatment, your doctor will use a computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of your head to diagnose the type of stroke you've had. For more information about these and other tests, see Exams and Tests. Ischemic stroke Emergency treatment for an ischemic stroke depends on the location and cause of the clot. Measures will be taken to stabilize your vital signs, including giving you medicines. Hemorrhagic stroke Treatment for hemorrhagic stroke includes efforts to control bleeding, reduce pressure in the brain, and stabilize vital signs, especially blood pressure. After emergency treatment for stroke, and when your condition has stabilized, treatment focuses on preventing another stroke. It will be important to control your risk factors for stroke, such … Continue reading

Only in the last 30 years have dramatic breakthroughs been made in the management of Parkinson's disease. Current treatment can significantly relieve people's symptoms and markedly improve their quality of life. Treatment Options Treatment for Parkinson's disease may include any or all of the following: The first stage of treatment for Parkinson's is an accurate diagnosis. This is tricky, as we have noted, particularly early in the disorder when distinguishing Parkinson's disease from other diseases with similar symptoms is particularly difficult. It may be helpful to see a neurologist who is experienced with what are called movement disorders. A movement disorder specialist has expertise in diagnosing and treating Parkinson's disease and related disorders. A visit to a movement disorder center may also be useful. Most such centers are connected with a department of neurology at a medical school, although some are freestanding clinics. The centers have access to appropriate rehabilitation facilities and are usually involved in research studies. The Maryland Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center is such a center. Although there is no cure for Parkinson's Disease, there are several measures that can be taken to improve a patient's quality of life. These measure include drug and surgical therapy. The other options available include making lifestyle changes, and employing physical and speech therapy. One of the very first options suggested by doctors is medication. There are several drugs available. All with different roles. Most people manage Parkinson's Disease with medication. But in some cases severe symptoms can heavily reduce one's quality of life and sometimes the medications side effects are difficult to deal with. In situations like these, a surgical alternative may be sought. There are several surgical options available, these include: Just like any other surgery, there are risks. The major risk is bleeding in the brain that would cause a stroke. A stroke usually occurs during the surgery or a few hours after. The effect of the stroke can range anywhere from permanent brain damage to mild or permanent weakness and even death. When an electrode is implanted it can become dislodged but it is relatively easy to locate using MRI or CT scans. Additional surgery will be required to replace the electrode, increasing the risk of … Continue reading

Treatment for Parkinson's Disease (PD), due to its chronic nature, requires broad-based management including patient and family education, support group services, general wellness maintenance, exercise, and nutrition. At present, there is no cure for PD, but medications or surgery can provide relief from the symptoms. While many medications treat Parkinson's, none actually reverse the effects of the disease or cure it. Furthermore, the gold standard treatment varies with the disease state. People with Parkinson's therefore often must take a variety of medications to manage the disease's symptoms.[1] Several medications currently in development seek to better address motor fluctuations and nonmotor symptoms of PD. However, none are yet on the market with specific approval to treat Parkinson's.[2] The main families of drugs useful for treating motor symptoms are Levodopa, dopamine agonists and MAO-B inhibitors.[3] The most commonly used treatment approach varies depending on the disease stage. Two phases are usually distinguished: an initial phase in which the individual with PD has already developed some disability for which he needs pharmacological treatment, and a second stage in which the patient develops motor complications related to levodopa usage.[3] Treatment in the initial state aims to attain an optimal tradeoff between good management of … Continue reading
