Pain management of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2013

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Oct-2013 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research The incidence of shoulder pain post stroke was high. Thus, it is clinically significant to study the onset characteristics and pain management. Yi Zhu and colleagues from Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China retrospectively investigated the characteristics of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke in patients from Nanjing, China, and discussed risk factors for hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke and curative effects of different pain management treatment methods. The researchers found that involvement of the posterior limb of internal capsule and early onset of shoulder pain can reduce the efficacy of pain management, while pain-related education before treatment and early pain regression increase the efficacy of pain management. In addition, diagnosis type of shoulder pain can influence the efficacy of pain management. Comprehensive rehabilitation can alleviate shoulder pain, and electroacupuncture based on the underlying physical therapy for shoulder subluxation pain is more efficiently. These results, published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 8, No. 25, 2013) can provide reference for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke. ### Article: " Pain management of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke in patients from Nanjing, China " by … Continue reading

Swift treatment aids local stroke patient

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2013

By Ryan Cornell WINCHESTER -- A new form of ultrasound therapy being tested in clinics across the world could lead to the next major breakthrough in treating strokes. The therapy involves placing a ClotBust-ER headframe on the head of someone who has suffered a stroke. The device, shaped like a crown, sends sonogram pulses toward a blood clot while an anticoagulant known as tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) infuses. Doctors believe the pulses could help penetrate and break up the clot. Because the treatment is in its clinical trial phases and is a double-blind study, the doctors don't even know whether the sonogram pulses are sent out or not, but one stroke patient undergoing the tests in Winchester, 79-year-old Dr. Jean Patrick, has gone through one miraculous transformation. The morning of Oct. 23 started out like any other for Patrick. She woke up, had her breakfast and headed to Mountain View Christian Academy in Winchester, where she had started teaching music instrument lessons that month. She said good morning to Andy Fahey, an administrator at the school, and started teaching the lessons. Patrick said she had finished playing the recorder and had moved on to teach her fourth grade student how … Continue reading

A Canadian national wanted in his home country since 1980 for allegedly raping a 5-year-old child with cerebral palsy was captured this week in Los Angeles County. Raymond Douglas MacLeod, 71, was taken into custody Monday morning by sheriffs deputies at his home in the 1400 block of Camper View Road in San Dimas, about 28 miles east of Los Angeles. MacLeod was also booked on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Authorities did not release details about his felony convictions. The longtime fugitive is expected to be deported to Canada because he is in the country illegally, authorities said. The discovery of MacLeods whereabouts and alleged criminal history was made early this year by Deputy Dan Whitten of the sheriffs Parks Bureau, according to a sheriffs department statement. MacLeod was living at the East Shore Recreational Vehicle Park in the San Gabriel Valley area, which is policed by the bureau. In a 10-month investigation, Whitten learned that MacLeod had been arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1974, the statement said. NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Edge Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing life-saving hospital products for acute, fatal or debilitating conditions, announced today, enrollment of the first patient in the NEWTON study, a multicenter Phase 1/2 randomized, open-label, controlled clinical study of its lead product, EG-1962 at the University of Maryland Medical Center site in Baltimore, Maryland. The study is evaluating the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of EG-1962 compared to the current standard of care, oral nimodipine after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Exploratory endpoints will assess the ability of EG-1962 to reduce delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and improve clinical outcome compared to oral nimodipine. EG-1962 is a novel polymeric nimodipine microparticle that is administered directly into the brain ventricles as a single dose and releases the drug at the site of brain injury over 21-days. EG-1962 is being developed to improve patient outcome by preventing DCI, a life-threatening complication of SAH that typically results from a ruptured brain aneurysm or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Veterans Mitigate PTS Through Yoga

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2013

SEDONA, AZ--(Marketwired - October 31, 2013) - One out of three soldiers deployed to the Middle East struggles with post-traumatic stress (PTS) or traumatic brain injury. For a growing number of veterans with serious mental health problems including PTS, depression and brain injury, yoga is an option proven to provide relief. When 23-year Air Force veteran Chris Eder is practicing yoga daily and meditating, he needs far less medication for depression, anxiety or PTS, conditions impacted by his military career. Young Americans go to war and come back "messed up" and in need of loving support, which this generation does not provide as readily as generations past, says Eder, who lives in Baltimore and is the father of three. Eder teaches yoga and educates yoga teachers about the military; he is on the faculty for a special February curriculum at the Sedona Yoga Festival to teach yoga teachers how to work with veterans across the country. The Yoga for Veterans training at the Sedona Yoga Festival is the first of its kind. Marc Titus, festival founder, was particularly inspired to help veterans due to his first-hand knowledge of the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Titus is the son of a … Continue reading

From left: Kenny Rickel and his wife, honoree Nancy Davis; family friend Lynn Palmer and Jason Davis. In front are Kenny and Nancy's twin daughters Isabella and Mariella. (Brian Payne, Special to The Denver Post) The late Marvin Davis brought Hollywood to Denver when he and wife, Barbara, started the Carousel Ball as a benefit for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Marvin, who died in 2004, made his fortune in the energy business and at various times owned 20th Century Fox, the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Aspen Skiing Co. And so it was logical that when the Rocky Mountain MS Center honored Marvin and Barbara's daughter, Nancy, the theme for the dinner event would be "Celebrating Hollywood." The Davis family had relocated to Beverly Hills 26 years ago and continued the Carousel Ball there, renaming it Carousel of Hope. Guests would enter Glendale's Infinity Park Event Center on a paparazzi-lined red carpet illuminated by spotlights. In the reception area, they'd be greeted by a Marilyn Monroe lookalike and "Frank Sinatra" crooning songs he made famous. Nancy, who was born at Rose Medical Center and graduated from Kent Denver School, was 34 years old when she diagnosed with … Continue reading
