Osiris-Mesoblast stem cell tech deal could top $100M

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2013

2:11 pm Fri, October 11, 2013 Posted: 2:11 pm Fri, October 11, 2013 By Associated Press NEW YORK Osiris Therapeutics shares rose Friday morning after the company said it is selling some of its stem cell therapy technology, including its transplant treatment Prochymal, to Mesoblast Ltd. in a deal that could be worth more than $100 million. Prochymal treats bone marrow transplant cells that attack the recipients body, and it is approved in Canada and New Zealand but isnt being sold. Osiris said it wants to focus on businesses with the greatest commercial potential. Its remaining products include Grafix, which is used to treat chronic and acute wounds, Ovation, which is used in tissue repair, and Cartiform, a treatment for acute cartilage injury. Shares of Osiris Therapeutics gained $1.42, or 8.3 percent, to $18.55 in premarket trading. Osiris said it had about $12.5 million in costs related to Prochymal over the last year. Osiris will get $50 million upfront from Mesoblast, which is based in Australia, and could get another $50 million based on development and regulatory review of therapies that use culture-expanded mesenchymal stem cells. Osiris said $35 million of the upfront payment will be made in cash. It … Continue reading

Brave stars take pain, trauma in their stride

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

"It's sort of like having a rock in your shoe. At first it's a pain but eventually you get used to it." Jack Day's beautifully simple way of explaining how he lives with cerebral palsy belies the pain and trauma he has endured in his short life. Born with the condition that causes stiffness in his legs and left arm, the 11-year-old has had nine operations, including a risky seven-hour surgery to cut selected spinal nerves when he was four. Jack and fellow Telethon 2013 star Tahlia Polmear have battled more illness and suffering in their 11 years than most adults do in their lifetime. Tahlia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia a year ago today. It has turned the Esperance schoolgirl's life upside down. Tahlia and her mother Anya moved to Perth for 10 months so she could begin a gruelling chemotherapy treatment regime - intravenous drugs, lumbar punctures and bone marrow checks - at Princess Margaret Hospital. Now in the treatment phase to stop the cancer returning, Tahlia is remarkably unaffected by the past year. "It hasn't stopped me from doing what I want to do. It's only stopped me from doing stuff I didn't do before, like … Continue reading

New theory of synapse formation in the brain

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

Oct. 10, 2013 The human brain keeps changing throughout a person's lifetime. New connections are continually created while synapses that are no longer in use degenerate. To date, little is known about the mechanisms behind these processes. Jlich neuroinformatician Dr. Markus Butz has now been able to ascribe the formation of new neural networks in the visual cortex to a simple homeostatic rule that is also the basis of many other self-regulating processes in nature. With this explanation, he and his colleague Dr. Arjen van Ooyen from Amsterdam also provide a new theory on the plasticity of the brain -- and a novel approach to understanding learning processes and treating brain injuries and diseases. The brains of adult humans are by no means hard wired. Scientists have repeatedly established this fact over the last few years using different imaging techniques. This so-called neuroplasticity not only plays a key role in learning processes, it also enables the brain to recover from injuries and compensate for the loss of functions. Researchers only recently found out that even in the adult brain, not only do existing synapses adapt to new circumstances, but new connections are constantly formed and reorganized. However, it was not … Continue reading

Packaging stem cells in capsules for heart therapy

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

Oct. 11, 2013 Stem cell therapy for heart disease is happening. Around the world, thousands of heart disease patients have been treated in clinical studies with some form of bone marrow cells or stem cells. But in many of those studies, the actual impact on heart function was modest or inconsistent. One reason is that most of the cells either don't stay in the heart or die soon after being introduced into the body. Cardiology researchers at Emory have a solution for this problem. The researchers package stem cells in a capsule made of alginate, a gel-like substance. Once packaged, the cells stay put, releasing their healing factors over time. Researchers used encapsulated mesenchymal stem cells to form a "patch" that was applied to the hearts of rats after a heart attack. Compared with animals treated with naked cells (or with nothing), rats treated with the capsule patches displayed increased heart function, reduced scar size and more growth of new blood vessels a month later. In addition, many more of the encapsulated cells stayed alive. "This approach appears to be an effective way to increase cell retention and survival in the context of cardiac cell therapy," says W. Robert Taylor, … Continue reading

Histogen to Present at 2013 Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 11, 2013 Histogen, Inc., a regenerative medicine company developing therapies for conditions including hair loss and cancer, announced today that Histogen CEO Gail K. Naughton, Ph.D. will give a company presentation at the 3rd Annual Regen Med Partnering Forum, part of the Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa to be held October 14-16 in La Jolla, CA. Histogen's solutions are based upon the products of cells grown under proprietary conditions that mimic the embryonic environment, including low oxygen and suspension. The technology focuses on stimulating a patient's own stem cells by delivering a proprietary complex of proteins that have been shown to support stem cell growth and differentiation. It is an exciting time for Histogen, as we continue to move the technology forward with expanded partnerships in skincare, compelling clinical data in both male and female hair loss, and early but exciting results in orthopedics, said Dr. Naughton. We look forward to sharing our story during the Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa, and to progressing our products even further through growing relationships with industry leaders and through our potential merger with Stratus Media to form publicly-traded Restorgenex. Organized by the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine … Continue reading
