Stem cell meeting focuses on business

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

LA JOLLA Stem cell science is at last moving into clinical trials. But delivering its results to patients will require huge investments by drug and biotech companies, and health insurers must decide on how to reimburse for such therapy. Just how thats going to happen is part of the Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa, which begins Monday and ends Wednesday. The annual conference, which began as a scientific symposium, has extended into business matters as research get closer to patient treatments. The meeting in La Jolla includes scientific updates on stem cell research and presentations from more than 50 companies and research institutes, seeking investment or offering their science skills. The business push into whats called regenerative medicine takes place as the United States is adopting a new health care system. Biotech executives speaking at the conference said their job is to document the benefits in restoring patient health and replacing less effective and more costly alternatives. Regenerative medicine aims to do what until very recently has been impossible: regrow lost tissues or organs and reverse degenerative diseases such as Parkinsons. The need for such treatments is becoming greater as baby boomers reach retirement age, and thousands of young … Continue reading

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill takes leave after epilepsy diagnosis

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

(UPI) -- Minnesota athletics director Norwood Teague announced Thursday that head coach Jerry Kill will continue to take leave for epilepsy treatment. "Coach Kill is taking time to continue treatment and focus on managing his epilepsy," Teague said in an official release. Kill had been planning to return to the team after a seizure early Saturday morning caused him to miss last weekend's 42-13 loss to Michigan. This is his fifth seizure-related absence since 2011, when he took the job at Minnesota. University president Eric Kaler said Teague and Kill are "managing this health situation, as it relates to our football program, in the most straightforward and caring manner possible." "My wife Rebecca, myself and our two daughters want to thank everyone for their prayers and concerns during the last few weeks," Kill said. "This was a difficult decision to make, but the right decision. "Our staff has been together a long time and I have full confidence in Coach Claeys and them during my time away," Kill said. "Every decision that will be made will be in the best interest of the players and the program. I look forward to returning to the Minnesota sideline on a full-time basis … Continue reading

Volunteers needed for autism fundraising

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

October 12, 2013 The Pennsylvania Autism Action Center Foundation is looking for Monroe County volunteers to help raise money for autistic children whose families cannot afford treatment services not covered by insurance. Having a strong genetic basis and appearing in children as young as 2, autism is a neural development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication and by restricted, repetitive or stereotyped behavior. The PAAC Foundation invites volunteers to its first meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday at the PAAC, 6515 Business Route 209 in Stroud Township. The PAAC's phone number is 570-861-4255. Though there is no cure, therapies and behavioral interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke website. Since the ideal treatment plan coordinates therapies and interventions that meet the specific needs of individual children, most health care professionals agree the earlier the diagnosis and intervention, the better. Treatment involves modifying an autistic child's environment to teach the child communication and other skills, said Michelle DeMarsh of Tobyhanna, PAAC principal owner. "New laws require all autistic children with need for treatment services to be covered by insurance," DeMarsh said. … Continue reading

Stroke Prevention Guidelines

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

You can help prevent stroke in many cases by modifying your risk factors. A stroke can be a very disabling event, leading to problems with memory, thought, movement and speech. You can help to prevent strokes by controlling your risk factors. But most strokes can be prevented. You and your doctor can identify your stroke-risk factors, and then take action to reduce them. Control High Blood Pressure High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is one of the strongest risk factors for strokes. It is also a risk factor that can be controlled, unlike your age, genetic makeup and race Controlling your blood pressure may require the daily use of one or more medications. Several studies have proven that you can reduce your risk of having a stroke by 42% by lowering your blood pressure as little as five points. If your blood pressure's top number (systolic) is between 120 and 139, or your bottom number (diastolic) is between 80 and 89, you have "pre-hypertension," a recently added category that says, "You may be heading toward full-blown high blood pressure." Because you are at risk of strokes and heart disease, it is important that you, like all people with high blood … Continue reading

Innovative Research Earns Salk Scientist EUREKA Award

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

Newswise LA JOLLA, CA - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has selected Axel Nimmerjahn for a highly competitive EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) grant. Dr. Nimmerjahn is an Assistant Professor in the Waitt Advanced Biophotonics Center and holds the Richard Allan Barry Developmental Chair. The award, in the amount of $1.38M over four years, will support Dr. Nimmerjahns goal of better understanding the relationship between spinal cord physiology and brain activity and behavior. Data from this research should foster development of new treatment and rehabilitation strategies for spinal cord injury, tumors, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular dystrophy. The EUREKA program was conceived specifically to assist scientists such as Dr. Nimmerjahn to test new, innovative ideas or tackle major methodological or technical challenges. NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., says that, "EUREKA awards reflect the NIH's continued commitment to funding transformative research, even if it carries more than the usual degree of scientific risk. The grants seek to elicit those 'eureka moments' when scientists make major theoretical or technical advances." One of the technical advances included in Dr. Nimmerjahns study will be the development of new tools and approaches … Continue reading

NHL community rallies around paralyzed Michigan high school hockey star

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

The hockey community is rallying around Michigan teen Matt Sorisho -- Twitter The NHL community is rallying around a Michigan teen who suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Catholic Central High (Novi, Mich.) senior forward Matt Sorisho, 17, broke his back when a defenseman spun him as he skated full speed toward the goal and careened into the boards in a Michigan Development Hockey League all-star game, multiple media outlets reported. Upon hearing the news, Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock visited Sorisho at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich. Babcock's son Michael played on the same line as Sorisho last winter, when as a junior the 17-year-old led the Shamrocks in scoring during their run to the state title game. Mike Babcock has been awesome, Detroit Catholic Central hockey coach Doug Itami told the Detroit Free Press. Theyve been very supportive, and the hockey community always wraps their arms around you when something like this happens. Similarly, Phoenix Coyotes forward David Moss, who graduated from Catholic Central in 2000, met the Sorisho family and even donned Matt's No. 18 Shamrocks jersey during warmups of their game against the Red Wings in … Continue reading

Life Tech product speeds brain cell research

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013

Neural stem cells can be produced in a week instead of months, with a new product from Life Technologies. Carlsbad-based Life Tech says its product will speed development of treatments for brain injuries and diseases. A team of researchers led by Life Tech scientists published their findings Thursday in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine. The study was led by Mohan C. Vemuri, a director of research and development at the company. The method is far superior to many of the most common methods used to make neural stem cells, said Paul Knoepfler, a stem cell scientist at UC Davis. Knoepfler was not involved in the research. "There is a strong need for human neural stem and progenitor cells as well as differentiated human brain cells," Knoepfler wrote in an an email after reviewing the research. "It is important to note that on the Life Technologies website the product is still listed as a 'prototype' so it'll be critical to see how this product functions in the 'real world' of a relatively larger number of research labs." Parkinson's disease is a major focus of stem cell therapies. The goal is to replace neurons that make the neurotransmitter dopamine, which are … Continue reading
