Cells Prefer Nanodiscs Over Nanorods

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2013

Newswise For years scientists have been working to fundamentally understand how nanoparticles move throughout the human body. One big unanswered question is how the shape of nanoparticles affects their entry into cells. Now researchers have discovered that under typical culture conditions, mammalian cells prefer disc-shaped nanoparticles over those shaped like rods. Understanding how the shape of nanoparticles affects their transport into cells could be a major boost for the field of nanomedicine by helping scientists to design better therapies for various diseases, such as improving the efficacy and reducing side effects of cancer drugs. In addition to nanoparticle geometry, the researchers also discovered that different types of cells have different mechanisms to pull in nanoparticles of different sizes, which was previously unknown. The research team also used theoretical models to identify the physical parameters that cells use when taking in nanoparticles. This research identified some very novel yet fundamental aspects in which cells interact with the shape of nanoparticles, said Krishnendu Roy, who recently joined the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University. Roy conducted this research at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with Profs. S. V. Sreenivasan and Li Shi, … Continue reading

Clowney's absence, defensive issues overshadow USC win over Kentucky Clowney's absence, defensive issues overshadow USC win over Kentucky Updated: Sunday, October 6 2013 11:19 AM EDT2013-10-06 15:19:59 GMT A Wedgefield couple has been charged with child abuse and failing to seek medical care after their 6-month-old daughter suffered a permanent brain injury last month, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office announced. Christopher McFadden Jr., 20, and Brittany Nicole Shapely, 18, were jailed Friday after an arrest warrant alleges they deliberately avoided medical treatment for the girl after being aware that the child was seriously injured, which caused a permanent brain injury, Sumter County Sheriff's Sgt. Tripp Mays said. The 6 month old was taken to the hospital Sept. 5 and a department of social services employee contacted authorities after hospital staff reported the child had cracked or broken ribs and the child's brain was swollen, according to the incident report. "While the cause of the injuries remains under investigation, staff at both hospitals said the injuries are consistent with suffocation and classified them as non-accidental,'" the incident report states. McFadden and Shapley are both in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on $150,000 bond. Copyright 2013 WIS. All rights reserved. Read the … Continue reading
