Major study sheds light on HRT

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2013

(CNN) - For years women have been getting conflicting information about whether or not they should seek out hormone replacement therapy to help them with the symptoms of menopause. Now a new study may give women some clear answers. Scientists have just released the results of a major long term study on the safety of hormone replacement therapy or HRT for menopausal women. The bottom line is for most healthy women who have just entered menopause taking HRT short term to battle symptoms is probably OK. But don't take it long term in hopes that it will prevent diseases such as heart disease or cancer. Taking HRT when older poses more risks. Hormone replacement therapy is used to replace female hormones that are no longer produced after menopause. These drugs help prevent hot flashes and night sweats that can affect menopausal women. For decades, doctors thought HRT was also good for women's hearts. To test this, and other issues, scientists decided to conduct a large trial called the "Women's Health Initiative." But the HRT trial was suspended early because women were having serious health issues including higher risks for heart problems, breast cancer and stroke. For this new study, scientists … Continue reading

Politicians Condemn 'Three-Person' Human Fertilisation

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2013

Human DNA samples in a laboratory in Munich. A group of 34 European politicians, including British MPs and a peer, have condemned 'three-person' IVF treatment that is to be pioneered for the first time in the UK, calling it "incompatible with human dignity and international law". The treatment is used for women with defective mitochondria cells, which provide the body with energy. Children of women with these faults have been born with illnesses including muscular dystrophy and blindness, and scientists have developed a form of IVF treatment in which they replace the mother's defective cells with a female donor's healthy mitochondrial DNA, eliminating the risk of congenital illness. The resulting child carries the DNA of three people, but scientists say that because the donor's DNA does not form part of the cell's nucleus, it would not affect the child's appearance or personality. The government is to put forward legislation allowing people in the UK to use the treatment, after a largely favourable response from a public consultation conducted by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). However, opposition to the treatment has intensified, with members of the Council of Europe voicing concerns that the it contravenes fundamental values, and scientists … Continue reading

Bridging The Spectrum

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2013

Written by Katelyn Malloy, gardencity@antonnews.com Saturday, 05 October 2013 00:00 With autism being such a hot button topic on Long Island, it was no surprise to see more than 1200 audience members fill Adelphi Universitys Center Ballroom to hear Dr. Temple Grandins lecture, The World Needs All Kinds of Minds, on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The demand to see her was so great that her appearance was streamed live to the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall and Manhattan Center. A respected and accomplished expert on the topic of autism, Dr. Grandins personal perspective has helped her make a significant impact on the way this disorder is viewed today. By the time Grandin was four, she had been diagnosed with autism and pressured to be institutionalized, which was the standard approach to treatment for autism and Aspergers in the early 1950s. By 1990, Temple Grandin had earned a bachelors degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce college, a masters degree in animal science from Arizona State University and a doctoral degree in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Now a professor of Animal Science at Colorado University for more than two decades, Dr. Grandin continues to use her photo realistic … Continue reading

Kansas high school recruit dies after suffering stroke on sidelines

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2013

Posted October 04, 2013 A Kansas high school football player died on Friday after suffering a stroke on the sidelines during a Thursday night game. According to the Kansas City Star, Andre Maloney, a senior wide receiver at Shawnee Mission West HS in Kansas City, suffered a stroke after scoring a 63-yard touchdown in SM Wests 37-34 loss to Leavenworth High School on Thursday. After being transported to a nearby hospital, Maloney underwent surgery which revealed a blood clot in his brain. Doctors were unable to remove the clot, and Maloneys family was told he was unlikely to emerge from his vegetative state. The family opted against continuing his treatment on Friday. Maloneys cousin, Karla Montoya, told the Star that something wasnt right after Maloney scored the touchdown. Maloney, who in July verbally committed to play football at KU, was untouched on the play and even celebrated his touchdown in the end zone, teammates said but stumbled when he returned to the bench. As he reached for a water bottle, SM West football coach Tim Callaghan said, Maloney got dizzy and lost functioning. Maloney grabbed a teammate for support as he staggered backward, but he ultimately collapsed, Montoya said. Maloney … Continue reading

BU student-researchers make stem cell discovery

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2013

October 3, 2013 Updated Oct 3, 2013 at 7:04 PM CDT PEORIA, Ill. -- Ryan Niemeier is part of a team of Bradley undergraduate students doing groundbreaking research in the school's biology department. "Its really hard to describe how good it feels to put two or three years into something and then finally get that positive result," Niemeier said. Especially when those results are historic. Under the direction of Bradley University professor Dr. Craig Cady, students recently conducted non-embryonic stem cell research that produced actual beating heart cells. "We had been working with our stem cells to make them into heart cells for about 20 days," explained Dr. Cady. "My student came in one day, looked at them in the laboratory and they were beating. They started to contract and beat. In my career I've seen some pretty exciting things, but to walk in a laboratory and see stem cells converting to human beating heart cells was an incredibly exciting, very passionate experience for all of us." And a great motivator to keep searching for answers. In April, the students in Dr. Cady's lab had a small role in assisting doctors at Children's Hospital who were performing a stem cell … Continue reading
