EpiCast Report: Acute Ischemic Stroke – Epidemiology Forecast to 2022

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2013

NEW YORK, Oct. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue: EpiCast Report: Acute Ischemic Stroke - Epidemiology Forecast to 2022 http://www.reportlinker.com/p01658562/EpiCast-Report-Acute-Ischemic-Stroke---Epidemiology-Forecast-to-2022.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Pathology EpiCast Report: Acute Ischemic Stroke - Epidemiology Forecast to 2022 Summary Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or interrupted, either by blood clots or ruptured blood vessels, depriving the brain of oxygen and nutrients, ultimately leading to the death of brain cells. Stroke is a major cause of death, morbidity, and long-term disability. To forecast the incident and prevalent cases of stroke in the 6MM, GlobalData epidemiologists selected studies that used the WHO definition of stroke: "rapidly developing clinical signs of focal disturbance of cerebral function, lasting more than 24 hours or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than that of vascular origin." This definition excludes cases of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), which are neurological deficits lasting less than 24 hours. This report also provides the incident cases of AIS segmented by the TOAST (Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) criteria subtypes and the proportion of recurrent cases of AIS out of the total cases of AIS (total cases of … Continue reading

Depression May Sometimes Foreshadow Parkinson's Diagnosis

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2013

By Denise Mann HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Oct. 2 (HealthDay News) -- Depressed people -- particularly those 65 or older or with hard-to-treat depression -- are more than three times as likely to develop Parkinson's disease as their peers without depression, a new study indicates. The new findings don't imply that depression causes Parkinson's disease. Instead, they suggest that depression may precede Parkinson's in some cases, said study author Dr. Albert Yang, an attending psychiatrist at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, in Taiwan. The researchers looked at information from a national Taiwan health insurance database. During a decade of follow-up, 1.43 percent of about 4,600 people with depression were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. By contrast, only 0.52 percent of more than 18,500 people with no history of depression were diagnosed with Parkinson's. After accounting for age and sex, people with depression were 3.24 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease, according to the study published in the Oct. 2 online issue of Neurology. "Depression is an important risk for Parkinson's disease, but mainly for [the] elderly and those with long-term and difficult-to-treat depression," said Yang, who is also a visiting assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. "Our study does not implicate all … Continue reading

Brain initiative a unique opportunity for San Diego

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2013

By Ralph J. Greenspan 4 p.m.Oct. 3, 2013 While it is no mystery to any of us why we need a brain, it remains a major mystery how the brain does what it does. As a result, when illness or injury disturbs the brains normal activities, we are hard pressed to treat the problem effectively. Those who have been affected either personally or through family and friends by conditions such as traumatic brain injury, autism, schizophrenia, depression, stroke or Alzheimers disease know all too well the tragedy and feeling of helplessness that comes with running up against the limitations of current treatment options. The human cost of these afflictions is staggering, and the economic cost enormous. A new national effort, the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), and the center launched by UC San Diego in response, the Center for Brain Activity Mapping (CBAM), are aimed at making it possible to overcome technical barriers so that we can know more about how the brain works and thus how to treat its malfunctions. Why is this more feasible now than in the past? Thanks to research advances in neuroscience, physics, chemistry and engineering, many of which have come from … Continue reading

New data show Novartis' Gilenya® reduced brain volume loss by one third and confirm brain volume loss link with …

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2013

New four-year data showed that continued Gilenya treatment reduced brain volume loss by one third when compared to delaying Gilenya by two years. MS patients with higher rates of brain volume loss were more likely to experience disease progression. Patients who remained free of disease had consistently lower rates of brain volume loss compared to patients who experienced disease activity. The digital press release with multimedia content can be accessed here: Basel, October 4, 2013 - Novartis announced today new data indicating that continued treatment with Gilenya (fingolimod) led to a reduction in brain volume loss in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), and was associated with a higher proportion of patients remaining free of disability progression [1],[2]. These data were presented at the ongoing 29th Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) in Copenhagen, Denmark. Brain volume loss is emerging as one of the best indicators of disability progression over the long-term in MS, and is a topic of much interest within the MS medical community[3]. Increasingly, research focus is on treatments that will reduce the rate of brain volume loss. Gilenya is the only oral treatment for MS that has … Continue reading

Poway, California (PRWEB) October 03, 2013 Center Veterinary Clinic has returned four year old Zedd the dog to a life without pain using Vet-Stem Regenerative Cell Therapy. Locally based Vet-Stem, Inc. is a leading Regenerative Veterinary Medicine company whose stem cell services have been used to treat over 10,000 animals over the last ten years. Dr. Matthew Bigelow and Zedds owners turned to stem cells for Zedd, a large mastiff mix, when his pain became so great that he could not go a day without medication, needed help getting up from a lying position, and walked with a very obvious limp. Three months after Zedds stem cell therapy his owners Paula and Chuck Newby are very pleased to report, "Zedds improvement was immediate. We could not believe how fast the change occurred. He has been a completely different dog since the stem cell therapy; So much energy and playfulness that just wasnt there before.
