Child Emergency Room Visits for Brain Injuries Doubled in 10 Years

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

A new study shows the number of children who visited emergency rooms for sports-related brain injuries has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. The number of children visiting emergency rooms for sports-related traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions, has nearly doubled in the last 10 years, according to a new study from physicians at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Between 2002 and 2011, the number of children making trips to emergency rooms for brain injuries increased by 92 percent. During the same time, the number of those admitted to the hospital for further observation or treatment also increased by about 10 percent. [READ: NFL, Players Reach $765 Million Deal Concerning Brain Damage Accusations] Holly Hanson, an emergency medicine fellow at Cincinnati Children's, and two other physicians studied more than 3,800 children and teens who came to the center with such injuries. Their findings were published online in the journal Pediatrics on Monday. Hanson says the increase in emergency room visits for sports-related brain injuries may stem in part from a greater awareness of the dangers of traumatic brain injuries. "I suspect that community emergency department physicians, parents, coaches, trainers are doing a better job at identifying and seeking … Continue reading

Small brain biopsies can be used to grow large numbers of patient's own brain cells

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

Public release date: 30-Sep-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Bethesda, MDA group of really brainy scientists have moved closer to growing "therapeutic" brain cells in the laboratory that can be re-integrated back into patients' brains to treat a wide range of neurological conditions. According to new research published online in The FASEB Journal, brain cells from a small biopsy can be used to grow large numbers of new personalized cells that are not only "healthy," but also possess powerful attributes to preserve and protect the brain from future injury, toxins and diseases. Scientists are hopeful that ultimately these cells could be transformed in the laboratory to yield specific cell types needed for a particular treatment, or to cross the "blood-brain barrier" by expressing specific therapeutic agents that are released directly into the brain. "This work is an example of how integrating basic science and clinical care may reveal privileged opportunities for biomedical research," said Matthew O. Hebb, M.D., Ph.D., FRCSC, a researcher involved in the work from the Departments of Clinical Neurological Sciences (Neurosurgery), Oncology and Otolaryngology at the University of Western Ontario in Ontario, Canada. "It … Continue reading

'Major step' towards finding MS cure

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

A major milestone has been reached on the path to finding a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers believe. A group of international scientists, including an Australian contingent, has discovered 48 previously unknown genes that influence the risk of developing MS. MS, which attacks a person's central nervous system and can impact mobility, balance and sensation, affects 23,000 Australians. The new discovery is a big step towards finding a cure and further treatment for the debilitating condition, says University of Sydney Associate Professor David Booth, who led the Australian and New Zealand component of the study 'The exciting thing about this is we have doubled the number of genes that we now know are associated with MS,' he told AAP. 'What that means is every one of those new genes is potentially providing us with a new way to understand the disease and to come up with new therapies for the disease.' Researchers believe the findings underline the central role the immune system plays in the development of MS. The results also show an overlap with genes found to be linked to other autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease. The team of scientists, working under the umbrella … Continue reading

Women share hormone replacement horrors

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

(WXYZ) - When Mickey Christopher visitedHRC Medical in Wixom for her scheduled appointment, she was startled to read the sign on the door. It said the company--which was now operating under another name--was closed. The company marketed its bioidentical hormone replacement therapy as safe and natural; a way for menopausal women to improve their sex drive and combat fatigue by having their hormones replaced by having tiny pellets placed under their skin. But its what the company doesnt tell you, says the FDA and many doctors, that can lead to uncommon but serious risks. "For estrogen therapy, the most serious risk is death," said Dr. Mark Dykowski, an OBGYN with Beaumont Hospital. "Estrogen has a big black box warning for the FDA, that says it can cause breast and uterine cancer. It can cause stroke, heart attack, blood clots and death...Theyre not being honest with patients if they dont include those risks." Since our first report in February , 22 complaints aboutHRCMedical have been filed with Michigans Attorney General. Legal action taken byTennesse'sAttorney General effectively closed the business down. Mickey Christopher says she's glad the company is no longer operating, but told 7 Action News that she wishes action had … Continue reading

Researchers uncover 48 new genetic variants associated with multiple sclerosis

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

Public release date: 29-Sep-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Lisa Worley lworley2@med.miami.edu 305-458-9654 University of Miami Scientists of the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC) have identified an additional 48 genetic variants influencing the risk of developing multiple sclerosis. This work nearly doubles the number of known genetic risk factors and thereby provides additional key insights into the biology of this debilitating neurological condition. The genes implicated by the newly identified associations underline the central role played by the immune system in the development of multiple sclerosis and show substantial overlap with genes known to be involved in other autoimmune diseases. Published online September 29 in the journal Nature Genetics, the study, "Analysis of immune-related loci identifies 48 new susceptibility variants for multiple sclerosis," is the largest investigation of multiple sclerosis genetics to date. Led by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, this study relied upon an international team of 193 investigators from 84 research groups in 13 countries and was funded by more than 40 local and national agencies and foundations. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disabling neurological condition that affects over 2.5 million individuals worldwide. The disease results in patchy inflammation and damage … Continue reading
