Trial to determine if stem cells can help with rare lung disease

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

Jose Guzman began gasping for breath while using his treadmill on the lowest setting and knew something was wrong. His search for answers led him to the diagnosis of a rare lung disease with no cure. Guzman, 72, who arrived from Cuba penniless and built a thriving Miami travel agency, doesnt give up easily. He has signed on to be one of the first patients to participate in a clinical trial being launched at the University of Miami. Dr. Marilyn Glassberg has obtained approval from the Food and Drug Administration to launch the first U.S. clinical trial that will test whether mesenchymal stem cells given intravenously could be a therapy for patients with Guzmans rare lung disease, known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The disease strikes mostly men who are 55 and older and ex-smokers. Glassberg, a pulmonologist and professor of medicine and surgery and director of the pulmonary division at the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at UMs Miller School of Medicine, has studied rare lung diseases for 20 years. She says this is her first real hope of extending or improving the lives of her patients who have this progressive and fatal lung disease, which often leads to death within … Continue reading

East Valley resident wins Autism walk T-shirt contest

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

When the ninth-annual Zoowalk for Autism Research kicks off next Saturday at the Phoenix Zoo, the participants will sport a T-shirt featuring the design of a Mesa resident who has worked to rise above the disorder. The winner, 21-year-old Chris Weemes, had his drawing of a phoenix sitting just below the phrase Rise above autism selected among all the entrants to win the Zoowalks T-shirt design competition. As a result, Weemes drawing will appear on thousand of T-shirts that will be worn by the participants in the Oct. 5 event run by Arizona State Universitys Autism/Aspergers Research Program. Weemes said he was quite excited to win the contest, and said he wasnt expecting his entry to take first. It was mostly my moms idea to get me into the contest; I figured it would be fun, he said. Part of the inspiration for the use of the phoenix is its symbolic representation of rebirth and rising above the disorder. Although autism is part of his everyday life, Weemes said it doesnt have that prominent of an effect on his life. Its not that big of a deal, but it was back then, he said. Weemes does draw on a regular … Continue reading

Chiros warned off treating children

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

Sept. 29, 2013, 3 a.m. Doctors are calling for chiropractors to stop treating children after a Melbourne infant's neck was broken during a chiropractic adjustment that went horribly wrong. Melbourne paediatrician Chris Pappas said he cared for a four-month-old baby last year after one of her vertebrae was fractured during a chiropractic treatment for torticollis - a wry neck, which is usually harmless in babies. He said the infant, who was rushed to Monash Medical Centre for treatment, was lucky to make a full recovery. ''It was a very fine line. Another few millimetres and there would have been a devastating spinal cord injury and the baby would have either died or had severe neurological impairment with quadriplegia. Everybody was very nervous about this little baby,'' he said. Dr Pappas complained about the treatment to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, which referred the case to the Chiropractic Board of Australia - the body charged with public protection and setting care standards. Three weeks ago, he received a letter from AHPRA saying the case had been privately investigated and closed after the chiropractor committed to completing education in paediatric chiropractic. The letter said the board had considered the patient's records … Continue reading

Brain injury awareness important for community

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

It can happen anytime, anywhere and without warning. A slip around the house, a miscalculation while driving or a medical emergency can cause a brain injury resulting in impairment of both mental and physical functioning that can range from mild to severe. The West Kootenay Brain Injury Association, a Castlegar based, non-profit dedicated to serving people in the Kootenay Boundary area, received a boost to its fund-raising and outreach efforts on Saturday, Sept. 28 when Sun Life Financial sponsored a barbecue at Kalawsky Chevrolet. "Some of our clients with brain injury don't have the ability to come out and volunteer or do things on their own without the support of a worker," said Kelly Johnson, executive director of the association. "So, it's so great when people from the community who are able-bodied are able to make partnerships with us and do something like this event on their own without even any help from us." Sun Life advisor Rauni Naud said she was happy to have arranged the barbecue, which unfortunately fell on a rather wet day in the Kootenays. Still, with delicious food and fun balloon creations donated from Doreen's Balloon Creations, the mood was cheery and bright under the … Continue reading

Oviedo Chiropractor Earns Special Certification in Whiplash and Brain Injury Traumatology

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

OVIEDO, Fla., Sept. 29, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Oviedo chiropractor Dr. Eric Janowitz of Synergy Family Health recently earned certification in treating whiplash and brain injury trauma from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego. Dr. Janowitz completed several months of additional study and worked personally with whiplash treatment pioneer Dr. Art Croft during the certification process. Although Dr. Janowitz has already treated thousands of cases of whiplash, neck injuries, headaches, and back injuries, he states that this certification gives him more tools for helping patients. Specifically, he says he is better prepared to provide technical documentation needed for insurance, the courts and other healthcare providers. According to the Oviedo chiropractor, whiplash injuries are highly complex and can cause severe pain for years without correct treatment. Dr. Janowitz describes whiplash as a sudden injury that damages muscles, discs, ligaments, nerves and even the vertebrae themselvesall in a fraction of a second. He says prompt treatment is the key to avoiding years of unnecessary pain from whiplash and other car accident injuries. Dr. Janowitz explains he was driven to complete this extra certification by his desire to help his patients. "At least 3 million people suffer whiplash each year, but many … Continue reading

Study 'major step' towards finding MS cure

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

A major milestone has been reached on the path to finding a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers believe. A group of international scientists, including an Australian contingent, has discovered 48 previously unknown genes that influence the risk of developing MS. MS, which attacks a person's central nervous system and can impact mobility, balance and sensation, affects 23,000 Australians. The new discovery is a big step towards finding a cure and further treatment for the debilitating condition, says University of Sydney Associate Professor David Booth, who led the Australian and New Zealand component of the study "The exciting thing about this is we have doubled the number of genes that we now know are associated with MS," he told AAP. "What that means is every one of those new genes is potentially providing us with a new way to understand the disease and to come up with new therapies for the disease." Researchers believe the findings underline the central role the immune system plays in the development of MS. The results also show an overlap with genes found to be linked to other autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease. The team of scientists, working under the umbrella … Continue reading
