Lorelei Decker shares good news following stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

A local teen battling cancer has shared some great news. Lorelei Decker who has been battling refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma is now in remission. Decker, a Putnam City North High School graduate, was granted a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation last year. She got to coach the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team for a day. Decker had a stem cell transplant earlier this year and was scheduled to stay at M.D. Anderson for 100 days. However, doctors discharged her almost one month early so she could be at home to welcome her brother back from Afghanistan. She will continue going to Houston once a week for check-ups, but she tells KOCO 5's Rachel Calderon that she will enroll at Oklahoma State University in January and is anticipating getting married in the future. Stay with KOCO 5 to hear from Decker later this week. Read more: Lorelei Decker shares good news following stem cell transplant … Continue reading

Bio-Matrix Scientific Group's Subsidiary, Regen BioPharma Announces dCellVax Breast Cancer Immunotherapeutic Product

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 25, 2013) - Bio-Matrix Scientific Group Inc. (OTCQB: BMSN) announced today that its Regen BioPharma subsidiary is currently developing research plans for its breast cancer immunotherapeutic product, dCellVax.This cell therapy is based on patent # 8,389,708 obtained from Dr. Wei-Ping Min of the University of Western Ontario as well as an international patent portfolio licensed from Benitech Biopharma Ltd. The dCellVax therapeutic product is based on extracting blood from patients, growing a specialized type of immune cell from the bloodcalled the "dendritic cell" and then subsequently genetically modifying the dendritic cell to become resistant to cancer's immune suppressive activity. It is known that cancer modifies the immune system by producing proteins which result in immune suppression. One suchprotein which cancer stimulates is an enzyme, indolamine 2,3 deoxygenase (IDO), which cancer turns on in dendritic cells. While dendritic cells are usually immune stimulators, dendritic cells found in cancer patients suppress the immune system as a result of expressing IDO. Researchers at the University of Western Ontario, led by Dr. Wei-Ping Min, have demonstrated that using a genetic blockade of IDO in dendritic cells makes them resistant to the effects of cancer, and allows them to stimulate potent immune responses … Continue reading

Retina Institute of California Advances Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Arcadia, CA (PRWEB) September 25, 2013 Retina Institute (RIC) announced that its ground-breaking study, using stem-cell based therapy for advanced geographic atrophy, won FDA approval to move into the next phase. "Our original work with 29 patients in the Phase 1b/2a showed a positive result in a large enough group of patients to warrant advancement of this study, said Michael Samuel, MD, Retina Institute surgeon and co-founder. There are only two sites in the world that are providing this treatment for advanced macular degeneration (AMD), and that is here at RIC and in Philadelphia. The study will allow patients with 20/80 or worse vision with central geographic atrophy related to AMD. The cells in use are non-embryonic in nature, are registered with the National Institute of Health Clinical Trials registry, and will be zero out-of-pocket cost for patients. There will also be modest compensation for visit-related expenses. This research was recently highlighted at the annual meeting of American Society of Retina Specialists where four RIC surgeons were asked to present. A point I would like to make with significant pride is that at present, our surgeons have the largest experience of delivering stem cells to patients for AMD in the … Continue reading

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals Granted Additional Broad Anti-RSPO Antibody Patent in U.S.

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 25, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OMED), a clinical-stage company developing novel therapeutics that target cancer stem cells (CSCs), or tumor-initiating cells, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted OncoMed its third broad U.S. patent relating to antibodies that target the RSPO-LGR pathway, which is believed to be an important CSC pathway. The new patent, U.S. Patent No. 8,540,989, covers methods of treating cancer with antibodies that bind human R-spondin (RSPO) proteins and either disrupt the binding of such proteins to their receptors, the leucine-rich repeat-containing G-coupled receptors (LGRs), or disrupt RSPO activation of LGR signaling. The new patent is based on key discoveries by OncoMed scientists that RSPO proteins signal through the LGR receptor family and that antibodies that disrupt binding of RSPO proteins to LGRs or that disrupt RSPO activation of LGR signaling are potential anti-cancer agents. OncoMed has identified multiple antibodies targeting the RSPO-LGR pathway and demonstrated the activity of these antibodies in preclinical studies. OncoMed plans to file an Investigational New Drug filing on its first antibody targeting the RSPO-LGR pathway in as early as 2014. OncoMed has worldwide rights to all of its RSPO-LGR … Continue reading

Disease-specific human embryonic stem cell lines placed on NIH registry

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Sep. 24, 2013 Scientists from King's College London have announced that 16 human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines have been approved by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and placed on their Stem Cell Registry, making them freely available for federally-funded research in the USA. The stem cell lines, which carry genes for a variety of hereditary disorders such as Huntington's disease, spinal muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis, are considered to be ideal research tools for designing models to understand disease progression, and ultimately in helping scientists develop new treatments for patients. King's is now one of the five biggest providers of disease-specific human embryonic stem cells lines on the NIH Registry, and the largest from the UK. The development is a significant milestone for King's and keeps the university at the forefront of global research into regenerative medicine. Embryonic stem cell lines are grown from frozen embryos donated by patients undergoing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in conjunction with IVF treatment. Unlike 'adult' stem cells, embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell within the body and are considered to be more useful for stem cell-based therapies. Disease-specific stem cell lines are created from embryos found to … Continue reading

Stem cell guidelines inadequate, docs say

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

MANILA, PhilippinesThe new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines regulating stem cell therapy in the Philippines are sorely inadequate and grossly misleading, according to a group of doctors. The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), the umbrella organization of Filipino doctors specializing in internal medicine, said it was disappointed with the FDA and Department of Health for failing to decisively act on the dangers posed by unregulated stem cell therapy in the country. The recent guidelines released by the FDA fell short and will not stop the proliferation of stem cell therapy for ailments that were not subjected to scientific study or clinical trials, PCP president Prescilla Limpin said in a statement We will not back down from our earlier call and we will not stop until stem cell therapy undergoes scientific studies to prove its safety, quality and efficacy on the ailments it has been propagated. We will not allow its promotion and use to helpless and unknowing patients and their desperate families, said Dr. Prescilla Caguioa, the PCP president. The FDA guidelines require that all stem cell and cellular-based treatments offered in the country should first pass the agencys standards for safety, efficacy and quality. Beginning Sept. 1, 2013, … Continue reading

Complete 2012-13 Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Industry Report (Updated)

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Dublin, Sept. 24, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/qzbnvh/complete_201213) has announced the addition of the "Complete 2012-13 Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Industry Report" report to their offering. Stem cell research and experimentation has been in process for well over five decades, as stem cells have the unique ability to divide and replicate repeatedly. In addition, their unspecialized nature allows them to differentiate into a wide variety of specialized cell types. The possibilities arising from these characteristics has caused great commercial interest, with potential applications ranging from the use of stem cells in reversal or treatment of disease, to targeted cell therapy, tissue regeneration, pharmacological testing on cell-specific tissues, and more. Diseases such as Huntington's Chorea, Parkinson's Disease, and spinal cord injuries are examples of clinical applications in which stem cells could offer benefits in halting or even reversing damage. Traditionally, scientists have worked with both embryonic and adult stem cells as research tools. While the appeal of embryonic cells has been their ability to differentiate into any type of cell, there has been significant ethical, moral and spiritual controversy surrounding their use for research purposes. Although some adult stem cells do have differentiation capacity, it is often limited … Continue reading
