New Data For Zonegran® (Zonisamide) to be Presented at The European Paediatric Neurology Society Congress

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Epilepsy is a common condition in children and adolescents, affecting around 10.5 million worldwide, with nearly one million living in Europe.[4],[5]Although epilepsy is common among children and adolescents, only two thirds will achieve seizure control and many will require additional AEDs to improve seizure control.[6] Two of the abstracts focus on long-term safety and efficacy data for zonisamide as an adjunctive therapy in paediatric patients (6 - 18 years old) with partial epilepsy.[7] The first study demonstrated an acceptable long-term (>1 year) safety profile versus placebo with no consistent detrimental effects on growth and development skills.[4] The second demonstrated that efficacy versus placebo in this patient group was maintained over a treatment period of >1 year.[5] A third study presented is a pooled safety analysis of 17 studies and demonstrated that zonisamide has an acceptable safety profile when used as an adjunctive treatment in paediatric patients.[6] Zonisamide is an anti-epileptic drug (AED) with multiple mechanisms of action and a structure which is chemically unrelated to any other AED.[8] Zonisamide is indicated in Europe as monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, in adults with newly diagnosed epilepsy and as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of … Continue reading

ATLANTAIn a small room similar to a doctor's office, Marlaina Dreher broke into applause as her 5-year-old son, Brandon, grabbed a red plastic spoon filled with pur?ed lasagna and fed himself. 10 Photos "Good job taking a bite, buddy," she said, joining in as her son banged his hands on a nearby table. "Good job putting your spoon back." Brandon is autistic, and he's come a long way in his seven weeks in the pediatric feeding disorder program at the Marcus Autism Center. He used to eat only crackers and McDonald's fries, but meal time is no longer a constant battle. "I couldn't have imagined being here seven weeks ago," Dreher said. "My husband, Sean, and I have said, `What if we had come here two years ago? Where would we be now?'" That's the heart of a partnership between the center and the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. It aims to train a small group of state and contract employees to work with day care operators and pre-K providers throughout Georgia to identify the early warning signs of autism and support parents. Clot-dissolving bubbles to treat strokes?

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Researchers are using computer simulations to investigate how ultrasound and tiny bubbles injected into the bloodstream might break up blood clots, limiting the damage caused by a stroke in its first hours. Strokes are the most common cause of long-term disability in the United States and the third most common cause of death. More than 795,000 Americans suffer a stroke every year, which happens when a clot blocks an artery or blood vessel and restricts blood flow to the brain. The longer the clot stays intact, the more brain tissue dies, the higher the chance of severe damage, and the lower a victims chance of survival. Now, researchers from the Universities of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and San Diego (UCSD) suspect these clots could be broken upwithout surgery or drugsusing a combination of microbubbles and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The team used supercomputers at the Department of Energys National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) to figure out how this might work. Their findings were published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. One day, HIFU could be a useful medical treatment for people who are stroke victims. But before this can happen, we need to establish … Continue reading

Disabled Woman Needs Financial Aid For Medical Treatment

ALOR SETAR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- A disabled (OKU) woman who suffered a stroke 14 months ago is hoping some sympathisers will come forward to help pay her medical bills. Halejah Mat, 63, who is afflicted with impairment of the hands and feet from childhood, also suffers from kidney disease, high blood pressure and gastritis. The mother of two said after the stroke which occurred during Ramadan last year, her husband had sought assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) twice but was rejected both times. "Before the stroke, I used to do sewing eventhough my hands were handicapped. I even prepared and sold my own pickled fish. But after the stroke I'm unable to do anything. I feel depressed just sitting and staring into space," she told reporters at her home in Taman Desa Kamela, in Alor Setar. Her husband, Basir Md Nor, 60, said he earned only RM80 for a full day doing home repair jobs or RM40 if he worked half day, which was insufficient for her medications, milk, diapers and other needs. "We are very grateful to our neighbours who help send us to hospital for my wife's therapy sessions as I don't have a car," … Continue reading

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Plans to improve the speed of treatment and standard of care for patients who have suffered a stroke will be put in place from October 15, commissioners were told yesterday. Officials from Norwich Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) welcomed the move by hospital bosses who are set to increase the number of stroke beds at the Colney site from 36 to 48. The NHS trust, which treats around 1,200 stroke patients a year, is failing to hit six key targets and has been criticised by commissioners. Board members of Norwich CCG said they felt assured that proposals to improve stroke care would be in place at the NNUH within six weeks. The action plan to improve stroke services will involve the reconfiguration of wards after the delivery suite is reopened at the end of September. Sheila Glenn, director of quality improvement and assurance at Norwich CCG, said: The N&N has been working extremely hard … Continue reading

Its a jarring sight as you walk past the tourist destinations and high-end stores around Rockefeller Center: Christopher Reeves empty mechanized wheelchair sitting in an empty shop window. Superman would have turned 61 tomorrow if he hadnt suffered a severe neck injury from a horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed. Reeve died in 2004. As part of Spinal Cord Awareness Month (since the beginning of September), Reeves wheelchair has sat as a stark reminder of what he endured after his ill-fated accident, but more importantly as a symbol of hope. His Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation has funded research that has advanced the treatment of spinal cord injuries, of which almost 1.3 million Americans are affected. The window display aims to call attention to the advances made in spinal-cord injury research and treatment, which has helped many people regain some semblance of normal functionfar more than was available to Reeve when he was injured. The space, at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, was donated by healthcare firm EHE International, while BBDO New York stepped in to design the display as a donation to the effort. We share Christopher Reeves dream of empty wheelchairs and will do everything within our power … Continue reading
