Treatments to Prevent Yet Another Stroke

Posted: Published on September 24th, 2013

Dear Dr. Roach: Im a 66-year-old man who has had two strokes in two years. The surgeon said that what caused the strokes both times is that arteries that supply blood to my brain are too small. The surgeon said brain surgery was too dangerous. All he did was change my meds. My concern is whether this treatment is enough to prevent another stroke. Im afraid I may have a third and final stroke! Dr. Roach, are there any other treatments available? Can this problem be helped with stents or stem cells? J.B. Answer: A stroke is very similar to a heart attack. Not enough blood flows to the brain, and some of the brain cells die, and the brain forms a scar. Depending on how much and what part of the brain is affected, the effect can be anywhere from unnoticeable to devastating. A TIA (transient ischemic attack) is similar to a stroke, except that symptoms last less than 24 hours, and it is thought to be from poor blood flow but without the resulting death of the brain cells. Treatment for an acute stroke, like a heart attack, should be done as quickly as possible in the hospital. … Continue reading

Surveyed U.S. Neurologists Report Greater Overall Satisfaction with Tecfidera than with Platform Injectables and Other …

Posted: Published on September 24th, 2013

EXTON, Pa., Sept.24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- BioTrends Research Group, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for specialized biopharmaceutical issues, finds that surveyed U.S. neurologists report significantly greater overall physician satisfaction with Biogen Idec's recently-launched oral disease-modifying therapy (DMT) Tecfidera than with most other DMTs approved for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). These other agents include platform injectables such as interferon-beta therapies and Teva's Copaxone, as well as other oral DMTsAubagio from Genzyme (a Sanofi company) and Novartis's Gilenya. This finding likely reflects respondents' high rating of Tecfidera on several key performance attributes in the areas of efficacy and patient benefits compared with other approved agents. Nevertheless, Copaxonethe current patient share leader among respondents' DMT-treated MS patientsstill ranks as respondents' most preferred brand for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS), a perception driven by the drug's long-term safety and tolerability/side effect profile. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130103/MM36805LOGO ) The recently published TreatmentTrends: Multiple Sclerosis Q3 2013 (US) report also finds that, if only two late-stage emerging products were to launch for the treatment of MS (out of six products assessed), more than 45 percent of surveyed neurologists select Teva's Copaxone 40 mg three-times-weekly (3TW) and Genzyme/Bayer … Continue reading

Cytori Therapeutics, Inc. ( CYTX ) provided preliminary data from a study evaluating a potential treatment for scleroderma based on the company's cell therapy. The investigator-funded, open-label, pilot study is being conducted on patients with cutaneous systemic scleroderma in France. 12 patients were administered Cytori's cell therapy, injected into their fingers. Safety and hand function improvement are the primary endpoints of the study which were measured by the Cochin hand functional scale at six months. At the end of the two month follow-up period, no infection, ischemic complications or serious adverse events were observed. Moreover, there was a significant improvement in the Cochin hand function disability scale. As far as secondary endpoints are concerned, there was a significant improvement in scleroderma health assessment questionnaire score and in Raynaud's Severity Score. Also, there was a significant improvement in hand pain when measured by the visual analog pain scale. Cytori is focused primarily on the development of treatments for cardiovascular disease and soft tissue injuries and burns based on its proprietary cell therapy formulation. The company's cell therapy is based on the formulation of stem and regenerative cells derived from a patient's own adipose (fat) tissue (ADRCs). The company has also designed … Continue reading
