Yourwellness Magazine Investigates Future Help for Epilepsy Sufferers

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 15 September 2013 The Epilepsy Foundation of America has awarded a Swedish company a $25,000 (15,962) grant to continue developing a bicycle helmet that could potentially offer protection to people with epilepsy, it was announced August 29th. Worn as a collar around the neck, the Hovding-Airbag for Cyclists contains a folded airbag which is shaped like a hood when inflated and is automatically deployed in the case of a collision, protecting the wearers head. Currently, design allows for single use during cycling but the new grant has been awarded to help Hovding adapt the technology to the needs of people with epilepsy, turning it into a reusable airbag for recurrent seizures. (http://www.epilepsyresearch.org.uk/airbag-helmet-wins-epilepsy-foundation-grant/) Yourwellness Magazine was inspired to look at other potential new ways to help people with epilepsy, and turned to a recent study which found that using components of the ketogenic diet in a pill can be an effective treatment for the condition with fewer side effects. The study, Seizure control by ketogenic diet-associated medium chain fatty acids was published in the June 2013 edition of the journal Neuropharmacology, and identified the specific fatty acids in a ketogenic diet that contain the potent antiepileptic effects. … Continue reading

One-of-a-kind walk for this grad

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

Jesse Martinez Jr. got the rock star treatment Saturday as he took the commencement stage at Freeman Coliseum. Martinez, 19, received a standing ovation for something most take for granted: He walked. A milestone for each of the 400 South San Antonio High School graduates, Martinez's walk to accept his diploma was a lifelong dream achieved with grit, sacrifice and determination. He was born with cerebral palsy and lost both legs at an early age. Saturday was the first time he walked with his prosthetics in public. With help from his teachers and senior class advisor, Martinez stood in his blue cap and gown, flashed a smile for the cameras and walked. I believe that because something isn't probable does not mean it's impossible, he said. Anything can be done with the right state of mind. Never one for special treatment, his teachers said, Martinez completed the work he missed during absences for surgery or rehabilitation. He stayed involved in activities such as fundraisers for school dances, and he was determined to walk the stage for graduation. This is pretty much an event that I've long waited for, and I'm glad to get it done. It's overwhelming, Martinez said. It's … Continue reading

Whistle-blower ‘vindicated’

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

Published: Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, 9:20p.m. Updated 8 hours ago As thousands of troops returned from Iraq and Afghanistan with head wounds between 2007 and 2010, the Veterans Affairs regional health system in central Texas closed a research center that was established for such injuries. Timothy Shea, director of the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network in Arlington, pushed to close the center and fire its chief neurologist. Afterward, Shea retired and became a VA consultant. Dr. Robert Van Boven, the neurologist who ran the Brian Injury and Recovery Laboratory in Austin, sued the VA and eventually settled his lawsuit for undisclosed terms. His lawyer, Tom Devine of Washington, said Van Boven was decisively vindicated and emerged with a big smile of thanks. Shea told the Tribune-Review that the Van Boven dispute was a very minor thing and did not influence his decision to retire at 61. In his lawsuit, Van Boven said the VA hired him in 2007 to run the brain injury center, a joint project with the University of Texas. The VA put $6.3 million toward its startup and the Office of National Drug Control Policy gave $4.5 million for equipment for graduate education and research. … Continue reading

Brain-injury foundation embraces its ‘maverick’ status

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

The New Jersey-based International Brain Research Foundation isnt without its critics, who say it oversells its accomplishments and may be preying on desperate families. In particular, the foundation faces criticism for combining a variety of experimental treatments, none of which have been proven conclusively to work. The not-for-profit group posted $5.5 million in revenues and a 38 percent profit margin in 2011. The foundation (www.ibrfinc.org) paid chief executive officer Philip DeFina, a neuropsychologist, a $404,435 annual salary in 2011, according to the foundations most recent IRS Form 990. Theyre not recognized by anybody in the mainstream, said Dr. David Cifu, professor and chairman of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University. Theyre not doing good science. When you look at their research, its not what I would treat patients based on. Cifu, 51, said its hard to know whether the foundations treatments really are helping people because there hasnt been rigorous evaluation of those methods. He added that some nutraceuticals can harm patients. The bigger risk is offering false hope, Cifu said. Some things in life are permanent, and thats sad. The foundations chief medical officer, neurologist Dr. Jonathan Fellus, rejected Cifus statements, though Fellus said he and others … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: There are alternatives to estrogen therapy

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

Q: Why are doctors so determined that menopausal patients should take estrogen? When I told my doctor that I am reluctant to take Premarin for fear of cancer, she actually said that cancer is no big deal. It is just a way of life now: Get cancer, get treatment and get over it, is pretty much what she said. I was appalled and have found a new doctor. A: We share your indignation. Cancer is a big deal, even when treated successfully. The controversy over hormone replacement therapy (Premarin, Prempro, Estrace and others) has raged for decades. The Food and Drug Administration requires warnings about both breast and uterine cancer in the official prescribing information. A combination of black cohosh and St. John's wort might ease menopausal symptoms. One study found that French maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) also may be helpful (Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, August 2007; Panminerva Medica, September 2011, Suppl. 1). Q: A friend and I were both recently diagnosed with perleche or angular cheilitis. Although the prescribed medicine (ciclopirox and fluticasone creams) clears it up, the irritation comes right back. I have very dry lips, and use lanolin to moisturize them. Could this exacerbate the … Continue reading

Vatican -backed stem cell research wins $1.2 mln US grant

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

Washington-AVatican-backed US company that researches an alternative to embryonic stem cells on Friday received a $1.2 million dollar government grant, despite independent studies that question whether their product exists. NeoStem, a New Jersey-headquartered company, is investigating very small embryonic-like (VSEL) cells found in adult bone marrow that they say may be able to regrow into different kinds of tissue. The research has stirred controversy due to NeoStems marketing partnership with theVatican and because three independent studies have been unable to confirm the cells are even there. The latest peer-reviewed grant, totaling $1,221,854, was provided by the US National Institutes of Health for research on an experimental drug that could regenerate bone tissue damaged by periodontitis, a serious gum disease. The company, along with other partner institutions, has already received $4.5 million in government research grants, including from the Department of Defense and the NIH. The NIH did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. We are very excited about our progress towards the IND (investigational new drug) submission for what we expect to be the first human clinical study for our VSEL Technology and for the support of the NIH, said a statement by NeoStem chief executive Robin … Continue reading
