Morris dancing, face painting, a raffle, hoopla, splat the rat, cakes, vintage car and Porsche rides were among the activities arranged by four-year-old Harrison Dillings Great Auntie Hil and Great Uncle Mike for the Quintessentially English Garden Party fundraiser. Harrison, who lives with mum Joanne, dad Jon and big brother Reece in Glenmoor Road, Ferndown, is quadriplegic and severely physically disabled, constantly needing treatment and expensive equipment to help him become more independent. His parents set up Harrisons Trust Fund after being overwhelmed with kind donations from family and friends. Jon, who works in recruitment, said: To say that the event was a success is a huge understatement. Magnificently organised, and needing to be due to the numbers turning up, it was a brilliant afternoon. With Hil and Mime both being Morris Dancers, entertainment was provided from various local Morris Dancers supporting their day. The Hobos, Bourne River Dancers, Dorset Buttons and Rapper Morris Dancers all danced … Continue reading

'Male menopause' may stem from low estrogen

Posted: Published on September 14th, 2013

TV ads tout testosterone treatments for "low T," but surprising new research shows a different hormone may play a role in less sex drive and more fat as men age. Estrogen the female hormone is needed by men, too, and the study gives the first clear evidence that too little of it can cause certain "male menopause" symptoms. "A lot of things we think are due to testosterone deficiency are actually related to the estrogen deficiency that accompanies it," said Dr. Joel Finkelstein of Massachusetts General Hospital. He led the U.S.-government funded study, which appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. Men's bodies convert some of it into estrogen, and levels of both decline with age. Until now, there was no way to tell which hormone was responsible for complaints of diminished libido, strength and energy. Millions of men have been prescribed testosterone gel, patches or shots for these problems, but it's not known how much they need or whether this hormone replacement therapy is good, bad or neutral, Finkelstein said. Doctors don't usually prescribe estrogen to men; the way to remedy low estrogen is to give them testosterone and let the … Continue reading

Estrogen-Only Hormone Replacement Therapy Could Lower Pancreatic Cancer Risk

Posted: Published on September 14th, 2013

By Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer Published: 09/13/2013 10:06 AM EDT on LiveScience One type of hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women may decrease the risk of pancreatic cancer, a new study suggests. In the study, women from California who took estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy for symptoms of menopause were 41 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer over a 14-year period than women who never took hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy (HRT) contains the female hormone estrogen by itself, as opposed to in combination with other hormones, such as progestin. Because estrogen by itself may increase the risk of uterine cancer, estrogen-only HRT is generally prescribed only to women who've had their uterus removed (a hysterectomy). However, in contrast to the results with estrogen-only HRT, the study also found another type of estrogen-containing medication -- birth control pills -- were linked with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer when used over the long term. [7 Surprising Facts about The Pill] Women who took oral contraception for 10 years or more had a 72 percent greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who had never used oral contraception. The study found associations, and cannot prove that estrogen -- … Continue reading

Vatican-backed stem cell research gets $1.2-M US grant

Posted: Published on September 14th, 2013

WASHINGTON - A Vatican-backed US company that researches an alternative to embryonic stem cells on Friday received a $1.2 million dollar government grant, despite independent studies that question whether their product even exists. NeoStem, a New Jersey-headquartered company, is investigating very small embryonic-like (VSEL) cells found in adult bone marrow that they say may be able to regrow into different kinds of tissue. The research has stirred controversy due to NeoStem's marketing partnership with the Vatican and three independent studies that have been unable to confirm the cells are even there. The latest peer-reviewed grant, totaling $1,221,854, was provided by the US National Institutes of Health for research on an experimental drug that could regenerate bone tissue damaged by periodontitis, a serious gum disease. The company, along with other partner institutions, has already received $4.5 million in government research grants, including from the Department of Defense and the NIH.
