Stroke victims anger over postcode lottery 7:30am Friday 13th September 2013 in News A STROKE victim says a healthcare postcode lottery has left him unable to get lifechanging hospital treatment. Michael Wilson, 65, of Perry Road, Benfleet, is desperate for a course of chiropractor treatment after suffering a stroke two years ago. The stroke caused him to temporarily lose the use of an arm and leg, but when he recovered from that, he was left with crippling back pain. Southend Hospital has put him through a number of treatments, including courses of medication, two painful epidurals and two courses of physiotherapy, but nothing has worked. He thought he had found the answer when he used the last of his savings to pay privately for a chiropractor who greatly improved his condition immediately. For the improvement to continue, he must undergo a full course of treatment, but he is unable to afford it. He has asked Castle Points Clinical Commissioning Group to fund the treatment, but the request was refused. Mr Wilson said: When I first had the stroke, I lost use of my leg and hand. It wasnt easy, but I got it back. When I first went to a … Continue reading

A walk to remember

Posted: Published on September 13th, 2013

Jesse Martinez Jr. got the rock star treatment Saturday as he took the commencement stage at Freeman Coliseum. Martinez, 19, received a standing ovation for something most take for granted: He walked. A milestone for each of the 400 South San Antonio High School graduates, Martinez's walk to accept his diploma was a lifelong dream achieved with grit, sacrifice and determination. He was born with cerebral palsy and lost both legs at an early age. Saturday was the first time he walked with his prosthetics in public. With help from his teachers and senior class advisor, Martinez stood in his blue cap and gown, flashed a smile for the cameras and walked. I believe that because something isn't probable does not mean it's impossible, he said. Anything can be done with the right state of mind. Never one for special treatment, his teachers said, Martinez completed the work he missed during absences for surgery or rehabilitation. He stayed involved in activities such as fundraisers for school dances, and he was determined to walk the stage for graduation. This is pretty much an event that I've long waited for, and I'm glad to get it done. It's overwhelming, Martinez said. It's … Continue reading

American Legion Releases Report on TBI and PTSD

Posted: Published on September 13th, 2013

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Legion released a report on Sept. 11 that is the culmination of a study the wartime veterans organization did on current treatments and best practices for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The report, entitled The War Within, includes findings and recommendations based on comprehensive research, conducted from January 2011 to February 2013, by an American Legion ad hoc committee chaired by William Detweiler, past national commander of the Legion. Detweiler said the report shows that while the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) use a number of traditional medical treatments for TBI and PTSD cases, they have not done a lot of research on alternative methods. Theres no simple answer to what works as far as PTSD or TBI is concerned, but we found that the (DoD and VA) medical profession shied away from certain things which they considered to be alternative medicine. For example, Detweiler said that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is one alternative treatment that works for some people. Its not the answer for everybody, but (DoD and VA) have shied away from putting any serious money into doing studies. Key findings from the Legions … Continue reading

Bioengineering principles can bring about groundbreaking ways of doing stem-cell research and designing skin grafts, new organs and new DNA structures to fight cancer, said Rick Hill, 61, retired CEO of computer-chip manufacturing equipment company Novellus Inc., whose donation is the largest ever given to the bioengineering department. Hill is a 1974 UIC bioengineering alumnus who grew up on Chicagos South Side and in south suburban Blue Island. He worked his way through college at summer jobs in steel mills, at a canning company and at Superior Match Company and the Ford stamping plant in Chicago Heights. These are huge economic opportunities, Hill said of the research his donation will enable. UIC is a great jewel of the University of Illinois system. It is ideally located to allow collaboration between industry and the university to make these kinds of significant advances. Hill and his wife, Loan, donated the $6.5 million on … Continue reading

Stem cells generated in live mice

The team reports its findings online this week in the journal Nature. The study is the first to achieve in living tissue what so far has only been possible in a petri dish. Embryonic stem cells represent the "gold standard" in stem cell research and regenerative medicine, since they are the only stem cells capable of differentiating into any of the hundreds of cell types in the body. The hope is that harnessing this ability to differentiate into any cell type will lead to treatments that can cure diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes. However, there are ethical problems about sourcing embryonic stem cells, as well as practical difficulties, since they have a very short lifespan during the early development of the embryo. Thus, there is a need to find alternative ways to make stem cells … Continue reading

NEWARK, Calif., Sept. 12, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- StemCells, Inc. (STEM) today announced dosing of the first high-dose patient in the Company's Phase I/II clinical trial in dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The patient, the fifth overall in the 16-patient trial, was transplanted yesterday with one million HuCNS-SC(R) cells (purified human neural stem cells). The first four patients each received a dose of 200,000 cells. An independent Data Safety Monitoring Committee conducted a review of the trial data to date, and found no safety issues to preclude the trial from proceeding to the high dose. "Advancing to the high dose, which is a five-fold increase from the low dose, is an important milestone in this trial," said Stephen Huhn, MD, FACS, FAAP, Vice President, CNS Clinical Research at StemCells. "Testing a cell dose of this magnitude in all the remaining patients planned for the trial will enhance our ability to assess the effect of the cells on visual acuity. "Also, we are pleased to announce that we have received permission from the FDA to open three more U.S. trial sites in addition to the Retina Foundation of the Southwest and the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford, the two currently active … Continue reading
