Research and Markets: The Multiple Sclerosis Therapeutic Landscape is in a State of Transition

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/tc3kq4/multiple) has announced the addition of the "Multiple Sclerosis Therapeutics to 2019 - Treatment Diversification, Increasing Efficacy, and Pipeline Innovation Combine to Drive Growth" report to their offering. Multiple Sclerosis Therapeutics to 2019 - Treatment Diversification, Increasing Efficacy, and Pipeline Innovation Combine to Drive Growth Sustained Growth of the Multiple Sclerosis Market The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) market has been growing consistently over the last two decades and is forecast to continue to grow from $8.1 billion in 2012 to $17.6 billion by 2019 at a CAGR of 11.6%. The US will remain the biggest market, constituting approximately 65% of the total by 2019, although this represents little change in the intervening years. Despite some countries in the EU growing more slowly in terms of prevalence than others (such as Germany and Spain), the European market in general will grow due to population growth and subsequent patient-population growth, higher drug prices, and strong uptake due to more expensive and efficacious pipeline drugs. Japan will remain of little significance owing to the very low prevalence population and continued negligible percentage of the overall market, despite high drug prices. The Multiple Sclerosis Therapeutic Landscape is in a State of … Continue reading

Karo Bio Receives Funding from the National MS Society to Develop ERbeta Agonists for Treatment of Progressive …

STOCKHOLM--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Regulatory News: Karo Bio AB (KARO.ST) has been awarded $0,5 million from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society through Fast Forward to develop a novel treatment ERbeta agonists -- for progressive forms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The funds will finance the further preclinical development of Karo Bios advanced compounds. Karo Bios ERbeta agonist has the potential to slow disease progression in multiple sclerosis as preclinical models show that it protects neurons and restores myelin. Damaged myelin leads to symptoms of illness and disability in MS patients. This intended profile differs dramatically from currently approved MS therapies, which are used for the treatment of relapsing MS and reduce inflammation, but do not restore myelin or directly protect neurons. We are very pleased to have received this funding from the National MS Society to support our efforts to address important unmet medical needs among MS patients says Per Bengtsson, CEO of Karo Bio. Our aim is to achieve a significant breakthrough in the treatment of MS. This investment by the National MS Society is a continuation of a strategic research focus on gender differences in MS. That effort helped drive basic research into the role of sex hormones, and estrogen in … Continue reading

Portland man with rare disease peddles on for a cure

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - Sam Bridgman may suffer from a very rare neuro-muscular disease affecting his coordination from head to toe, but the recent University of Portland graduate isn't taking his condition lying down. And he's hoping Portlanders will jump on their bike to help him fight. Bridgman, who recently started a job at Nike, grew up playing baseball and skiing down black diamond runs, but he developed scoliosis when he was 10 years old. He started falling down for no reason. By age 15, Bridgman was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia, a condition that only affects 10,000 people in the U.S. and 15,000 worldwide. Bridgman said there's only about eight people in Portland who have the condition. FA affects coordination from head to toe, and it can cause heart disease and an early death. "Basically, your body just fails over time," he said. "I can build up strength in my legs. My body just might not know what to do with that strength." Despite the condition, Bridgman refused to stay on the sidelines, and he became involved with Ride for Ataxia, an annual fundraising bike ride for FA research. "There's currently no treatment or cure, which is why we have … Continue reading

Low estrogen and 'male menopause'

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2013

September 11, 2013 By MARILYNN MARCHIONE AP Chief Medical Writer TV ads tout testosterone treatments for "low T," but surprising new research shows a different hormone may play a role in less sex drive and more fat as men age. Estrogen -- the female hormone -- is needed by men, too, and the study gives the first clear evidence that too little of it can cause certain "male menopause" symptoms. "A lot of things we think are due to testosterone deficiency are actually related to the estrogen deficiency that accompanies it," said Dr. Joel Finkelstein of Massachusetts General Hospital. He led the U.S.-government funded study, which appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. Men's bodies convert some of it into estrogen, and levels of both decline with age. Until now, there was no way to tell which hormone was responsible for complaints of diminished libido, strength and energy. Millions of men have been prescribed testosterone gel, patches or shots for these problems, but it's not known how much they need or whether this hormone replacement therapy is good, bad or neutral, Finkelstein said. Doctors don't usually prescribe estrogen to men; the way … Continue reading
