Fetal stem cell transplantation favorably impacts radiation-induced cognitive dysfunction

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2013

Public release date: 22-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Bob Miranda cogcomm@aol.com Cell Transplantation Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair Putnam Valley, NY. (Aug. 22, 2013) Patients receiving cranial irradiation treatment for brain cancer may find the treatment life-saving, but often suffer progressive and debilitating cognitive detriments, including spatial learning and memory deficits. The cognitive deficits are a contributing factor to the often significant adverse impacts on the surviving patients' quality of life after radiation therapy. In an effort to improve post-irradiation cognitive impairment, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, and colleagues at Neuralstem, Inc. (Rockville, MD), have transplanted fetal stem cells into laboratory animals with radiation-induced cognitive impairments and found that this led to a number of cognitive improvements. The study appears as an early e-publication for the journal Cell Transplantation, and is now freely available on-line at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/pre-prints/ct1048acharya. "Multiple mechanisms contribute to disrupted cognition following irradiation for patients with central nervous system malignancies. These include the depletion of radiosensitive populations of stem and progenitor cells in the hippocampus," said study co-author Dr. Charles L. Limoli of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, Irvine. "Interventions to combat long-term brain damage … Continue reading

Docs to be trained in epilepsy care in US

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2013

Posted On Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 01:07:20 AM In order to bridge the gap between epilepsy cares provided in India and abroad, an Indo-US collaborative effort is taking place which is likely to help millions of patients in India. Ten neurologists from the country will be trained for a period between one and three months on epilepsy treatment. The initiative was unveiled at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) on Sunday as part of a Colloquium on Drug Resistant Epilepsy. The idea is the brainchild of Nimhans Director P Sathischandra, jointly with the Association of American Epileptologists of Indian origin and the Indian Epilepsy Association (Bangalore Chapter). The young neurologists will be trained by eminent neurosurgeons in America on the latest advancement in the treatment of epilepsy. They will come back and apply their learning to the patients. We have also been planning service projects like free epilepsy clinics in rural areas where neurosurgeons from the USA will come and conduct camps, Dr Sanjay P Singh of the American Epileptologists of Indian Origin said. India has about 1,000 neurosurgeons. It is important for them to be well equipped with the latest treatment. There is a growing need … Continue reading

Kids with autistic older sibling have seven-fold risk

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2013

Children who have an older sibling with autism are seven times more likely than other kids to be diagnosed with the disorder themselves, according to a new study from Denmark. That extra risk is smaller than had been suggested in earlier studies. Researchers also found a higher-than-average risk among children whose older half-sibling had an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - especially if the two kids shared the same mother. "I think a lot of autism researchers agree that the causes of autism are many and it's very complex," Therese Gronborg, who led the study at Aarhus University, said. "If it was only genetics we would see a much higher recurrence rate" among siblings, she told Reuters Health. About one in every 88 U.S. children has an ASD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For their new study, Gronborg and her colleagues used birth, civil and psychiatric registries to track 1.5 million children born in Denmark between 1980 and 2004. Through 2010, just over 13,000 of them had been diagnosed with an ASD. That included 276 children with an older sibling with autism who were also diagnosed with the disorder. The researchers found the likelihood of a younger … Continue reading

More resources available for children with autism, families

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. Father of three Dwayne Moment said he and his wife started the emotional process of trial and error when their twin sons were just a few months old. My wife noticed things that were definitely not happening, motor skills, trying to talk, Moment said. After a diagnosis of autism, which now affects an estimated one in 50 school-age children, Moment and his wife started looking for treatment options. One of the therapies they wanted to try is called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). For example, if youre trying to help a child say the word cookie you would reinforce their behavior of saying the cuh sound and then go from there to use their full language skills to then say that word. Its about breaking everything down into small pieces, said Kristen Dovenmuehle, director of ABA at Damar Services in Indianapolis. ABA is one of the most successful therapies for autism. Some families have even said they no longer see the behaviors associated with autism in their children after ABA therapy. But until recently, ABA was expensive and most insurance companies didnt cover it. Growing evidence of the success of ABA combined with the prevalence of children diagnosed with … Continue reading
