Implant device for Parkinson's?

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2013

Q: My father was diagnosed with Parkinson's last year. His medication controls the tremors, but when he forgets his pills, he shuffles and suffers. Would deep brain stimulation zap his disease? A: Deep brain stimulation is a surgical option; a neurostimulator, implanted in the chest, delivers electrical signals to the brain, much like a pacemaker. In Parkinson's, the device is linked to electrodes that are implanted in the areas of the brain that control movement. This is a great treatment for some patients, but not all. It does not cure the disease or stop the progression; it just helps control some of the symptoms. Stimulation is helpful for patients who have a tremor that is not controlled well enough with medication, or who have side effects from medicine. It does not alleviate other symptoms, such as balance and memory problems, and can even worsen them. In general, we make sure to exhaust all drug options before referring to surgery, since all surgeries entail risk. Every case is different; a decision to operate should be made with the guidance of a specialist who knows the patient well. Since your father responds well to pills, but has trouble remembering them, use an … Continue reading

Va research institute to study cerebral palsy

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2013

ROANOKE, Va. The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute is creating a research clinic to study new ways to treat cerebral palsy. Organizers say that children from around the world who suffer from the disorder will be treated at the Roanoke-based institute's Neuromotor Research Clinic. Cerebral palsy involves the loss or impairment of motor function or posture. It is caused by injury or abnormal development in the brain that happens before, during or immediately after birth. The Roanoke Times reports that the program is being funded by a $4.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Additional financial support is coming from Virginia Tech, Carilion Clinic and private donors. The program will follow the progress of 135 children between the ages of 2 and 8 and incorporate science developed at the center with therapy that will be delivered in the child's home. It will include study sites at the University of Virginia and Ohio State University. Researchers at the institute have developed a form of high-intensity therapy to help affected children use their impaired arms and legs. "We do not accept the notion that damage to the brain is irreversible, or that treatment should only be for a select few," … Continue reading

Quality of instruction key for students with autism

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2013

For parents of preschoolers with autism, finding a classroom program for their child may have just gotten a little easier. A new study has found that it's the quality of a teaching program -- not the model of instruction -- that seems to be most important to a student's success. That means parents shouldn't fret when the local or available program is not a particular type, as long as it is considered good, said Samuel Odom, a co-author of the study and director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Autism spectrum disorder occurs in about one in 88 children in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with boys more likely to have the condition. Symptom severity can vary widely, but kids with autism typically have a hard time communicating and interacting with others. The new research, recently published online in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, showed that two widely used comprehensive treatment models -- called LEAP and TEACCH -- were no better than high-quality special education preschool programs. When quality factors were present in a classroom, the children's performance improved … Continue reading
