Shining stem cells reveals how our skin is maintained

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Aug. 15, 2013 All organs in our body rely on stem cells in order to maintain their function. The skin is our largest organ and forms a shield against the environment. New research results from BRIC, University of Copenhagen and Cambridge University, challenge current stem cell models and explains how the skin is maintained throughout life. The results have just been published in the journal Cell Stem Cell. New knowledge challenge stem cell models The skin consists of many different cell types, including hair cells, fat- and sweat glands. It protects us against microbial and chemical attacks and forms a waterproof barrier that prevents fluid loss. Associate professor Kim Jensen' group from BRIC have through mapping of stem cell's behaviour in the skin found out that the skin uses a unique method to renew itself. Their results challenge the current perception of how our skin is renewed. "Until now, the belief was that the skin's stem cells were organized in a strict hierarchy with a primitive stem cell type at the top of the hierarchy, and that this cell gave rise to all other cell types of the skin. However, our results show that there are differentiated levels of stem … Continue reading

Dr. Anthony Leachon, who is in Davao City, said he emailed his resignation letter to Ona. It is with deep regret that I'm resigning asDepartment of Health consultant for non-communicable diseases effective today (Friday). I have been privileged and honored to be a part of your administration even as a one peso a year consultant. I value our friendship and camaraderie which started years ago, Leachon, vice president of the Philippine College of Physicians and Onas consultant for non-communicable diseases, wrote. Because his position is directly opposed to Onas, Leachon told the Health secretary, I believe I have lost your trust and confidence and I might not be effective serving the DOH and fighting the PCP and medical societies ' cause in the service of the Filipino patient. The tempest on stem cell treatment

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Medical Files By Rafael Castillo M.D. Philippine Daily Inquirer The stem cell plot thickens, and the controversy on the inappropriate use and gross misuse of this innovative treatment by some practitioners has seemingly reached tilting point. Whole-page advertisements were published in major dailies stating in strong terms the sentiments and joint position of various medical organizations and subspecialty societies, most of which are under the umbrella of the Philippine Medical Association. Curiously and ironically, the alliance was obviously against the newly formed stem cell society, the officers of which are composed of past PMA presidents. The Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine also issued its position statement two weeks ago in its website. In a keynote speech delivered during the mid-year convention of the Philippine Society of Stem Cell Medicine recently, Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona described the controversy as pitting the supposed medical scientists, the freewheeling practitioners and the regulatory arm of government against each other. Challenge At the end of his speech, Dr. Ona offered what the various groups need to do. The challenge, I believe, among us seemingly competing forces is to sit down and craft a path of consensus, taking in consideration the most fundamental tenet why … Continue reading

Heart's own stem cells offer hope for new treatment of heart failure

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Public release date: 15-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Katya Nasim katya.nasim@kcl.ac.uk 44-207-848-3840 King's College London Researchers at King's College London have for the first time highlighted the natural regenerative capacity of a group of stem cells that reside in the heart. This new study shows that these cells are responsible for repairing and regenerating muscle tissue damaged by a heart attack which leads to heart failure. The study, published today in the journal Cell, shows that if the stem cells are eliminated, the heart is unable to repair after damage. If the cardiac stem cells are replaced the heart repairs itself, leading to complete cellular, anatomical and functional heart recovery, with the heart returning to normal and pumping at a regular rate. Also, if the cardiac stem cells are removed and re-injected, they naturally 'home' to and repair the damaged heart, a discovery that could lead to less-invasive treatments and even early prevention of heart failure in the future. The study, funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), set out to establish the role of cardiac stem cells (eCSCs) by first removing the cells from the hearts of rodents with heart failure. This stopped regeneration … Continue reading

Bypassing Immune Rejection in Stem-Cell-Based Therapies

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Durham, NC (PRWEB) August 16, 2013 The scientific community has held tremendous hope for the eventual emergence of stem cell transplantation as a broadly applicable and highly effective therapeutic strategy. However, the realization of this hope has been plagued by the indomitable immune response to the transplantation of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) derivatives, which prevents the engraftment and long-term survival necessary for functional recovery or preservation of the host tissue. In an article featured in the latest issue of STEM CELLS, a research group from Stanford University describes a novel regimen for quashing this immunologic barrier a short-course treatment with two costimlation-adhesion blockade agents, allowing engraftment of transplanted differentiated stem cells and their prolonged survival in tissue. "Inducing immune tolerance to human embryonic stem cell graft is critical for the clinical success of regenerative medicine, commented Dr. Joseph Wu, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. We have realized, however, that traditional immunosuppressive therapies used to prevent solid organ rejection, such as calcineurin inhibitors and corticosteroids, are insufficient to prevent human embryonic stem cell rejection following transplantation. In the study, hESCs were made to express enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP), differentiated to endothelial … Continue reading

FDA sets deadline for stem cell registration

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013

Manila, Philippines -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered that all human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products, or HCT/P's, should be registered with the agency before August 31. Acting FDA Director General Kenneth Hartigan Go said based on a circular issued last month that required all stem-cell products be registered in the country. "Accredited and licensed facilities dealing with HCT/P's must file their applications for registration at the FDA before August 31, 2013. Otherwise, these products shall be considered unapproved and unauthorized for use," according to the FDA circular. The FDA said it recognizes three applications of stem cell therapy. These are hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, corneal resurfacing with limbal stem cells, and skin regeneration with epidermal stem cells. Go said all researches dealing with HCT/P's and the propagation of such other than their approved use are all considered clinical investigations and will have to comply with the existing FDA process and guidelines. The FDA vowed to go after those perpetuators who endanger the public through the use of unauthorized stem cell products. "Strict compliance is mandatory. FDA will pursue perpetrators who expose the Filipino public to the dangers of unapproved human cells and cellular-based products and … Continue reading
