DOH sets deadline for stem cell therapy accreditation

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2013

Manila, Philippines -- Hospitals and health facilities offering stem cell therapy have until August 31 to apply for accreditation from the Department of Health (DoH). DoH Secretary Enrique T. Ona said a number of hospitals in Metro Manila have already applied for accreditation to perform this "innovative" treatment that has not yet been accepted as standard mode of care in the country since it needs further tests and several more layers of research. In the first mid-year convention of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine at the Manila Hotel yesterday, Ona reiterated that stem cell therapy is "the future of medicine." "Stem cell therapy is not a cure-all medical treatment. Patients have yet to be presented first with standard of treatment, and in many cases, stem cell treatments have to be done in conjunction with other standard modalities of treatment," he said. The Bureau of Health Facilities and Services (BHFS) of the DoH is accepting the applications for accreditation while a bio-ethics committee and a hospital-based review board will go over the applications and decide on their approval. Five big hospitals in Metro Manila have already applied for accreditation, said Nick Lutero, chief of the BHFS. Lutero said initial … Continue reading

Cardium Reports On Potential Use Of Excellagen To Repair Prenatally Diagnosed Birth Defects Using Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardium Therapeutics (NYSE MKT: CXM) today reported on a research collaboration with researchers at Boston Children's Hospital, to assess the medical utility of Excellagen as a delivery scaffold to seed autologous mesenchymal fetal stem cells for ex-vivo engineering of tissue grafts for transplantation into infants to repair prenatally diagnosed birth defects. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20051018/CARDIUMLOGO) Autologous mesenchymal fetal stem cells are derived prenatally from infants with a medical defect requiring life-saving tissue repairs. These stem cells are sourced from amniotic fluid, the placenta or umbilical cord blood. The stem cells are then seeded into a scaffold to promote the growth of an engineered tissue graft. These grafts will potentially be used to surgically repair, either in the fetus or immediately following birth, certain prenatally diagnosed birth defects that could include congenital diaphragmatic hernia, tracheal and chest wall defects, bladder extrophy and various cardiac anomalies. Preliminary pre-clinical research has confirmed that Excellagen collagen homogenate maintains mesenchymal fetal stem cell viability. Additional proof of concept studies are currently underway. "Boston Children's team has made remarkable progress in the field of tissue regeneration and surgical repair of prenatally diagnosed congenital defects. We believe that Excellagen has an opportunity … Continue reading

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Epilepsy Also Included In: Pediatrics / Children's Health Article Date: 12 Aug 2013 - 9:00 PDT Current ratings for: Genetic clues to epilepsy discovered by scientists 3.25 (4 votes) Scientists have discovered two new genes linked to severe forms of childhood epilepsy, a breakthrough reached with new genetic technology, according to a study published in the journal Nature. Researchers say that the genetic research technique may be a highly effective way of making discoveries about other complex neurological disorders like epilepsy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), epilepsy affects more than 2 million people in the US. More than 300,000 of these are children under the age of 15. This most recent research is part of a worldwide study called Epilepsy 4000 (Epi4k), analyzing DNA from 4,000 epilepsy patients and their relatives. Researchers from Duke University Medical Center and staff from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) created a series of international research institutions named Epilepsy Centers Without Walls. The centers enabled the researchers to conduct an analysis of DNA sequences and patient information of participants. The researchers say that DNA and clinical data was originally collected through the NIH-funded … Continue reading

Public release date: 11-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Rebecca Scott rebeccas@unimelb.edu.au 61-383-440-181 University of Melbourne Results from a landmark international study using state of the art technology has revealed new genetic mutations that cause epilepsy. The findings could help to advance treatments for the most severe forms of epilepsy. The global study, led by the University of Melbourne and Austin Hospital (Aus), Duke University and the University of California, San Francisco (US), used advanced gene technology known as exome sequencing to identify new genes that cause severe childhood epilepsies. Epilepsy is a brain condition that affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide. As part of a larger project analysing 4,000 genomes from epilepsy patients around the world, researchers have discovered in one group of patients, two new genes and 25 epilepsy-causing mutations. The research suggests there will be common pathways to target epilepsies with drugs and other therapies. It was published today in Nature. Co study leader Professor Sam Berkovic, Director of the Epilepsy Research Centre, University of Melbourne and Austin Hospital said the study was a major conceptual advance in how we analyse epilepsies, helping researchers to better identify their genetic causes and improve treatment options. … Continue reading

Tool kit answers mental health and epilepsy questions for parents

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2013

Public release date: 12-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Susan Griffith susan.griffith@case.edu 216-368-1004 Case Western Reserve University Parents of children with epilepsy and mental health problems have a new go-to resource. Researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic have created "What you should know about mental health in youth with epilepsy," an information booklet and CD that answers questions about children's medical and psychological issues. About 2 million Americans, or roughly one percent of the population, have epilepsy, according to The Epilepsy Foundation. It also reports that mental health issues, including depression, affect about 30 percent of children with epilepsy. Depression contributes to suicide, which is higher among adolescents with epilepsy than the general teen populations. So many parents naturally wonder what can be done to help their children. Drawing from their experiences with families and children with epilepsy, Jane Timmons-Mitchell, PhD, from the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, and Tatiana Falcone, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Epilepsy Center at Cleveland Clinic, created the guide. The information includes sections on child development, epilepsy and … Continue reading

UPI/Bill Greenblatt License photo Published: Aug. 12, 2013 at 7:49 PM ANN ARBOR, Mich., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say they found a correlation between pregnant women whose labors are induced or augmented and an increased risk of autism. Senior author Marie Lynn Miranda of the University of Michigan said the findings did not prove cause and effect, but suggested the need for more research, particularly as labor induction and augmentation have been used more frequently in recent years. "Additional studies are needed to differentiate among potential explanations of the association, such as: underlying pregnancy conditions requiring the eventual need to induce/augment, the events of labor and delivery associated with induction/augmentation, and the specific treatments and dosing used to induce/augment labor such as exogenous oxytocin and prostaglandins," Miranda said in a statement. Lead author Simon G. Gregory of Duke University analyzed records of all births in North Carolina over an eight-year period and matched 625,042 births with corresponding public school records, … Continue reading

Is there an anorexia-autism connection?

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2013

Girls with anorexia may tend to have traits that are usually found in people with autism, a new study suggests. Researchers compared 66 teen girls who had anorexia with about 1,600 girls who did not have the eating disorder, using questionnaires they had previously developed to assess thinking and personality types in children with autism. The girls with anorexia were found to have more interest in systems and order, and lower scores in empathy a profile more similar to people with autism than to typical adolescents, the researchers said. The finding suggests the two conditions may share certain features, such as rigid attitudes and behaviors, a tendency to be very self-focused and a fascination with detail, the researchers said. Traditionally, anorexia has been viewed purely as an eating disorder. This is quite reasonable, since the girls dangerously low weight and their risk of malnutrition or even death has to be the highest priority for treatment, said Simon Baron-Cohen, a professor of developmental psychopathology at the University of Cambridge in England. But his study suggests that underlying the surface behavior, the mind of a person with anorexia may share a lot with the mind of a person with autism, Baron-Cohen said. … Continue reading
