Genetic Literacy Project Infographic: 10 Reasons We Need Biotech Foods and Crops

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2013

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- One of the most common techniques used by anti-biotech campaigners on the Web is the circulation of Top 10 type lists, which purport to unmask the biotech industry and top scientists and regulators for churning out lies about genetically modified (GM) foods that will lead to the destruction of the global food supply. The Genetic Literacy Project (GLP) put the search terms myths about GM foods in Google and came up with more than 1.6 million entries and thousands of articles with titles like 10 reasons why we dont need GM foods. It is a compilation of the most egregious (and easily debunked) claims by advocacy groups. To inject reason and logic into the debate, GLP is launching a new project. The Genetic Literacy Project will release occasional infographics to represent what the science says about crop biotechnology. The first infographic 10 Reasons We Need Biotech Foods and Cropsis included in the GLP Weekly Newsletter, and is also available on the GLP website. It comes complete with source links to international foundations, research organizations, major science journals and leading newspapers. Agricultural and human biotechnology are reshaping farming, food and medicine. The GLP explores the intersection of DNA … Continue reading

Blackburn resident launches campaign to help find Asian stem cell donors

Blackburn resident launches campaign to help find Asian stem cell donors 8:30am Thursday 8th August 2013 in News By Chloe Glover, Reporter Saima Ashraf with her plea for Rayaan A MAJOR drive to encourage the Asian community to donate stem cells has been launched in East Lancashire to help save the life of a young boy. Blackburn resident Saima Ashraf, 30, has spearheaded the campaign to find a donor for six-year-old Rayaan Siddiqui after being shocked to find out that fewer than three per cent of Asian people in the UK were on the stem cell donor register. Rayaan, from Welling, in Kent, who was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer, has a fight against time to find a donor to treat the condition called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. With a need for stem cells almost identical to his own for treatment to be effective, the best chance of finding a suitable match lies within someone of his own ethnic background. Ms Ashraf, who works as an auditor at Thornton General, was compelled to head the search in Lancashire after hearing about his condition on a radio show. According to recent statistics, only 50 per cent of people with the … Continue reading

European Commission Approves VELCADEĀ® as a Frontline Induction Therapy before Stem Cell Transplantation

Posted: Published on August 8th, 2013

BEERSE, Belgium--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Janssen-Cilag International NV (Janssen) announced today that the European Commission (EC) has approved the use of VELCADE (bortezomib) as induction therapy (a first therapeutic option) in combination with dexamethasone (VD) or thalidomide and dexamethasone (VTD).1 This licence extension will apply to adult patients with previously-untreated multiple myeloma who are eligible for high-dose chemotherapy with haematological stem cell transplantation. Until now, VELCADEs (bortezomib) indication has been limited to its use, in combination with melphalan and prednisone, in adult patients with multiple myeloma that are previously untreated and ineligible for stem cell transplant, and as a single agent in advanced multiple myeloma.2 Multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, currently affects around 60,000 people in Europe.3 This decision could mean significantly improved outcomes for many patients with this disease. The approval by the EC was based on the analysis of data from two Phase III trials (IFM-2005-01, PETHEMA/GEM05) which demonstrated that treatment with VELCADE-based induction resulted in improvements in post-induction and post-transplant response rates and in progression-free survival (PFS); PFS and overall survival (OS) were secondary endpoints. The trials studied the use of VELCADE-based regimens VD and VTD, compared to non-VELCADE-based regimens of vincristine plus doxorubicin and dexamethasone, or … Continue reading

Epilepsy drug approved in Wales

Posted: Published on August 8th, 2013

7 August 2013 Last updated at 04:37 ET A new class of drug treatment has been approved for the most common form of epilepsy for sufferers in Wales. It is thought between 20,000 and 30,000 people in Wales have epilepsy with around 1,500 new cases being diagnosed each year. The decision by the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group means access to a drug called Fycompa which can help some people control their seizures. Charity Epilepsy Action said it welcomed new treatments. Charlotte Lawthom, a consultant neurologist based in Newport and the clinical lead in epilepsy at Aneurin Bevan Health Board, said it was hoped the drug would help around a third of patients whose seizures are not well controlled. She said: "For those people who have uncontrolled epilepsy, life is difficult. "There are lots of restrictions, they can't drive and there are safety issues because you can come to major harm on seizures. "The longer you have been having seizures, the worse things can tend to get. "The difference about this particular drug is that it acts in a novel place in the brain. That might mean that for some people that is going to be the drug that works … Continue reading
