In a position statement, the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine (PRBOM) said foreign doctors must submit proof of education, training and clinical experience and actual practice in the field of stem cell therapy, plus a current license to practice authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consulate in the country of origin when they apply for the special permits. The board warned: Any foreign physician who practices the professionwithout a STP will be criminally liable for illegal practice of medicine. And, it added, those who have aided and abetted the foreign physicianspractice of the profession are also criminally liable. Scientists identify biomarker to predict immune response risk after stem cell transplants

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

Public release date: 7-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Eric Schoch eschoch@iu.edu 317-274-8205 Indiana University INDIANAPOLIS -- Researchers from Indiana University, the University of Michigan, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have identified and validated a biomarker accessible in blood tests that could be used to predict which stem cell transplant patients are at highest risk for a potentially fatal immune response called graft-versus-host disease. Although transplant specialists have been able to reduce its impact, graft-versus-host disease remains a leading cause of death among patients who receive a stem cell transplant from another person, known as an allogeneic transplant. Such transplants are used to treat blood and bone marrow cancers such as leukemia and multiple myeloma, often as a last resort. Graft-versus-host disease occurs when immune cells from the transplant see the patient's body as foreign and attack it. Approximately 20,000 allogeneic stem cell transplants were performed worldwide in 2012. Thirty to 40 percent of stem cell transplant recipients whose donor is related will experience graft-versus-host disease. The percentage could rise to 60 to 80 percent if the patient and donor are not related. The researchers found that patients with a high level … Continue reading

Gold 'nanoprobes' hold the key to treating killer diseases

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

Aug. 7, 2013 Researchers at the University of Southampton, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Cambridge, have developed a technique to help treat fatal diseases more effectively. Dr Sumeet Mahajan and his group at the Institute for Life Sciences at Southampton are using gold nanoprobes to identify different types of cells, so that they can use the right ones in stem cell therapies. Stem cell therapy is in its infancy, but has the potential to change the way we treat cancer and other life-threatening diseases, by replacing damaged or diseased cells with healthy ones. One of the key limitations of stem cell therapy is identifying the right cells to use for different therapies. This fundamental problem with the treatment is being tackled by this new research. Dr Mahajan, Senior Chemistry Lecturer in Life Science Interface, says: "Stem cells could hold the key to tackling many diseases. They develop into all the various kinds of cells needed in the body -- blood, nerves and organs -- but it is almost impossible to tell them apart during their initial development without complex techniques, even with the most advanced microscopes. Up to now, scientists have used intrusive fluorescent markers to tag … Continue reading

Scientists Solve DNA Puzzle of Cord Stem Cell Infection

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

Researchers studying diseases with an unknown cause may have a new method to try, as scientists reverse engineered a new bacterium responsible for a syndrome discovered fewer than two years ago. The quest began in 2011, after doctors reported a syndrome they called cord colitis in a small group of patients treated with umbilical cord stem cells for blood cancer and other hematologic diseases. Researchers at Dana-Faber Cancer Institute in Boston hypothesized that the new ailment, which responded to antibiotics, stemmed from a previously unknown infectious agent. Bacteria are typically identified after investigators obtain a living sample and grow it in laboratory dishes. In the case of cord colitis, all the researchers had was preserved biopsy specimens from colons of treated patients that werent alive and couldnt grow. After sequencing the DNA from the specimens and eliminating those identified as human, they began assembling pieces of the genetic jigsaw puzzle that was left. If these patients had an infection, there should be human cells and bacterial cells, said Ami Bhatt, the lead researcher and a clinical fellow in hematology and oncology at Dana-Faber. What I expected to find was some weird variety of E. coli or a similar bacteria found … Continue reading
