DURHAM, N.C. - It can happen in an instant and change lives forever. Close to two million people are affected by traumatic brain injury every year. Worldwide, its a major cause of death and disability. Now, researchers are hoping something that our body produces naturally can help bring the first ever TBI treatment to those who need it. As I was driving, I blacked out behind the wheel and the car went into the back of a parked 18 wheeler, Lester Talley said. Health issues led to Talleys near fatal accident. The husband and father of two suffered a serious traumatic brain injury. My brain had started swelling, Talley said. There really is no definitive therapy for the treatment of acute brain injury, said Dr. Daniel Laskowitz, professor of medicine (neurology), neurobiology, and anesthesiology and director, neurovascular laboratories at Duke University Medical Center. Talleys wife Ashley feared the worst. "Seemed like my world was coming to an end," she said. While in a coma, Talley was enrolled in a phase three trial called SyNAPSe. UTEP student works to eradicate leukemia through stem cells

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2013

Through research, attention to detail and patience, Rebecca Soto is working to eradicate leukemia through stem cell research. Soto, a junior at the University of Texas at El Paso, is one of 44 undergraduate students chosen from a pool of 650 applicants to participate in the 2013 Harvard Stem Cell Institute Internship program in Cambridge, Mass. It was through her work at UTEP, in which she was studying the influenza virus through the Harvard Hughes Medical Institute, that Soto as given the opportunity to participate in the stem cell research program at Harvard. Soto said she jumped at the opportunity because of her love for science and the potential of stem cells. "Stem cell research has been seen as the best potential to cure a variety of diseases," Soto said. "With leukemia the most typical type of treatments are bone marrow transplants. But sometimes the patient's immune system rejects the transplant. But if you can harvest the stem cells from the patient and reprogram their cells to be healthy they may be able to recuperate from the disease they have." The summer program, hosted by Harvard University and 11 of the university's affiliated schools and hospitals including the Boston Children's … Continue reading

Urge to start smoking could be genetic, study says

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2013

Smokers are more likely to have children who also smoke, even if they quit before their child was born, MedPage Today reported. In a study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers discovered that the children of people who smoked only in their teenage years were still 3.2 times more likely to also pick up the habit, compared to children whose parents had never smoked. For the study, researchers gathered data from a sample of ninth grade students in St. Paul, Minn. They followed this group from 1988 through age 38 - and then also gathered data from the children of that cohort, starting at age 11. Overall, they found the rate of smoking was 23 to 29 percent among kids ages 11 and older whose parents had once smoked or currently smoked, compared with 8 percent among children of parents who had never smoked, MedPage Today reported. Children who had older siblings who smoked were also more likely to smoke, researchers reported. "We don't know exactly what's going on here, but my hypothesis is that there is a genetic predisposition toward smoking, Dr. John Spangler, a family and community medicine specialist at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., … Continue reading

AbbVie, angel investors restock nanomedicine leader Chad Mirkin’s pharma venture

For a Northwestern University biopharmaceutical spinoff, a second tranche of Series B funding will push along pre-clinical development of gene-regulating therapies for multiple diseases. AuraSense Therapeutics isnt disclosing how much was raised in the second tranche of its Series B, but the company says funding came from AbbVie Inc. and angel investors including David Walt, a co-founder of Illumina, and Craig Mundie, senior advisor to the CEO at Microsoft. According to SEC filings, AuraSense first secured $5.4 million in Series B funds back in 2011. The startup is developing a platform for nucleic-acid based therapeutics with applications in oncology, dermatology, neurology and for immune disorders. It says its spherical nucleic acid (SNA) conjugates overcome the greatest obstacles to gene regulation: they dont need carrier agents, they provoke minimal immune response and they have no known toxicity. The technology is based on gold nanoparticles, which have also formed the foundation of several other drug companies platforms because of their accessibility, versatility and ability to attach easily to other molecules. AuraSenses differentiator? Its scientific co-founder,Chad Mirkin, is a pioneer in the field of nanomedicine. He developed the first SNA constructs nearly two decades ago and has since founded four companies based on … Continue reading
