Combination stroke therapy safe and effective, study suggests

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

July 30, 2013 The combination of the clot-busting drug tPA with an infusion of the antiplatelet drug eptifibatide dissolves blood clots safely and more quickly than tPA alone, a study led by University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers has found. Results from the study, known as the CLEAR-ER Stroke Trial, are published online in the journal Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. UC was the coordinating center for the trial, which included nine medical centers comprising 21 hospitals. The CLEAR-ER Stroke Trial was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) as a Specialized Programs of Translational Research in Acute Stroke (SPOTRIAS) project. Standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke (characterized by an obstruction to the blood flow, typically a clot), is intravenous (IV) delivery of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) within three hours of stroke onset. The CLEAR-ER (Combined Approach to Lysis Utilizing Eptifibatide and rt-PA in Acute Ischemic Stroke -- Enhanced Regimen) trial was a phase-2 clinical trial designed to determine the safety of an enhanced dosing regimen using eptifibatide and establish evidence for a phase-3 clinical trial, which would use a larger pool of subjects. As an … Continue reading

Offering Neuromodulation Earlier Could be Better in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Newswise Spinal cord stimulation should be considered earlier than a last resort for treating a rare but debilitating chronic pain condition known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), according to a research analysis in Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, the journal of the International Neuromodulation Society. Members held an online discussion about the topic in July during one of the societys periodic Expert Panels. The discussion July 7 21 was moderated by recognized leaders in research and treatment of CRPS. The interactive session took place shortly after the societys 11th biennial World Congress Berlin in June, where some 1,400 delegates addressed the full range of neuromodulation therapies for chronic pain, movement disorder, and emerging indications. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat chronic neuropathic pain of the trunk and limbs has been FDA-approved since 1989, and word about the option is growing among patients, referring physicians, and allied health professionals. CRPS patients such as Ed Levien of Bethesda, MD are trying to raise more awareness about treatment options for chronic pain. He only learned about SCS through another patient, 12 years after suffering an injury that triggered pain so severe he could not tolerate anything touching his affected arm. Complex … Continue reading

Scientist Demonstrates Personal Triumph Over Cerebral Palsy as She Treats Children With Brain Injuries at Burke …

WHITE PLAINS, NY--(Marketwired - July 30, 2013) - For millions of children, buttoning their shirts or tying their shoes are simple tasks of everyday life. This was not the case however for Kathleen Friel and the approximately one million people in the U.S. who suffer from cerebral palsy, a disorder of movement and posture caused by injury to the developing brain. Around her first birthday, Kathleen was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and was given a poor prognosis for becoming an independently-functioning adult. But with unfettered determination, Kathleen began developing compensatory motor strategies to make up for her significant deficits with movement. Being unable to grasp Cheerios, her favorite cereal, she developed a strategy of licking her fingertip, inserting them into the center of the O and bringing the snack to her mouth. It is with this keen understanding of cerebral palsy and the ability to develop solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems that Kathleen Friel, Ph.D., joins Burke Medical Research Institute's Early Brain Injury Recovery Program that became fully functional at the end of July. Being part of this program lends itself to her mission of helping others who suffer from the same disease she has battled throughout her life. "In … Continue reading

Traumatic brain injury benefits and services

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

RACINE The term polytrauma is defined as a serious injury to two or more body systems which result in physical, cognitive or psychological impairments that limit a persons ability to function. Traumatic Brain Injury frequently occurs in polytrauma. It can be difficult to navigate the maze of benefits information at the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration. Fortunately, case management is an integral part of the Polytrauma System of Care. A clinical case manager will work with veterans, service members and their family to help: n Transition from a military hospital to a VA medical center. n Communicate between veteran/service member, family and VA rehabilitation team. n Identify various VA, DoD, and community resources. n Apply for appropriate VA benefits. Early into a service members admission to a treatment facility, they will meet various points of contact. Some POCs will focus mostly on clinical (medical) issues. Others will focus on non-clinical services. Information on services and benefits changes from time to time. It is therefore important to check with the appropriate POCs at the Veterans Benefits Administration periodically for updates. The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center Family Caregiver Giver Course provides extensive information on how to navigate services and … Continue reading

Starkville, MS Gum Surgery is Now Offered Using a New Laser Protocol by Dr. John Starr for an Alternative Gum Disease …

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Starkville, MS (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 Golden Triangle Periodontal Center's Dr. John Starr has joined the minority of dental professionals who can offer patients gum disease treatment in the form of the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). Patients in Starkville, MS who avoided traditional periodontal surgery can now receive an effective, less invasive form of gum surgery from Dr. Starr. LANAP uses an FDA-cleared laser, the Periolase MVP-7, to exclusively remove gum disease, leaving healthy teeth and gum tissue completely untouched. In contrast to conventional gum surgery, which involves cutting, loss of gum tissue, reshaping of bone, and stitching, LANAP generally causes minimal pain or bleeding. Patients also usually require less time to heal after the procedure than they would after traditional surgery. Dr. Starr begins the laser gum surgery by taking a measurement of the depth of the patient's gum pockets. Next, he uses the laser to remove only the gum disease. The procedure can be this precise because the wavelength of the laser does not affect healthy tissue, bone, or the root of the tooth; it is only absorbed by bacteria and diseased tissue. Dr. Starr then uses a tool to remove tartar from the teeth, which … Continue reading
