Bioethicist: Failed search for controversial form of stem cells shows danger of mixing science, religion

Posted: Published on July 29th, 2013

Stem cells Arthur Caplan, Ph.D NBC News contributor 11 hours ago What should we think when a scientist claims to have found a cell in the human body with miraculous powers that no one before has ever seen and almost no one else can even find trying to follow his directions of where to look? The small number of scientific proponents of the miraculous healing powers of a controversial form of stem cells called VSELSvery small embryonic-like stem cells -- are facing this very question. The usual answer is that, at best, the claim must be the product of wishful thinking, or at worst, fraud. A just published study by the distinguished stem cell biologist Irving Weissman of Stanford Universitys School of Medicine says he and his team could not find VSELS or corroborate their alleged regenerative power. The Catholic Church, because of its opposition to embryo destruction to obtain stem cells for research, gave its blessings and money to VSELS therapy so it also now finds itself up to its miters in controversy. A few years ago in early November 2011, I was lucky enough to be asked to attend a meeting on stem cell research at the Vatican. … Continue reading

Human stem cell-derived hepatocytes regenerate liver function

Posted: Published on July 29th, 2013

July 26, 2013 Researchers have generated functional hepatocytes from human stem cells, transplanted them into mice with acute liver injury, and shown the ability of these stem-cell derived human liver cells to function normally and increase survival of the treated animals. This promising advance in the development of cell-based therapies to treat liver failure resulting from injury or disease relied on the development of scalable, reproducible methods to produce stem cell-derived hepatocytes in bioreactors, as described in an article in Stem Cells and Development. Massoud Vosough and coauthors demonstrate a large-scale, integrated manufacturing strategy for generating functional hepatocytes in a single suspension culture grown in a scalable stirred bioreactor. In the article "Generation of Functional Hepatocyte-Like Cells from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells in a Scalable Suspension Culture" the authors describe the method used for scale-up, differentiation of the pluripotent stem cells into liver cells, and characterization and purification of the hepatocytes based on their physiological properties and the expression of liver cell biomarkers. David C. Hay, MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, U.K., comments on the importance of Vosough et al.'s contribution to the scientific literature in his editorial in Stem Cells and Development entitled "Rapid and Scalable … Continue reading

California agency adopts $70M plan for stem cell clinical trial network

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2013

The governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine voted Thursday to adopt a $70-million plan to develop a network of clinics for conducting trials of experimental stem-cell therapies. The vote authorizes CIRM to begin accepting applications from academic institutions interested in hosting clinics. Ultimately, the Alpha Stem Cell Clinics Network will include up to five clinics as well as a coordinating center to shoulder some of their load, such as enrolling patients and handling the paperwork involved in clinical trials. The board approved the plan by a vote of 19 to 1, according to David Jensen, publisher of the California Stem Cell Report. The one dissenter was Joan Samuelson, founder of the Parkinson's Action Network, "who questioned whether the plan was premature and whether existing scientific research justified development of the clinics," Jensen reported. The Alpha network reflects CIRM's recent focus on helping researchers convert stem-cell discoveries from the lab into useful treatments for patients with a range of conditions, including Parkinson's, Type 1 diabetes and spinal cord injuries. Scientists value stem cells because they are capable of growing into a variety of cell types in the body. That means that -- under the right conditions -- they … Continue reading

'Motion sensor' may aid autism diagnosis and treatment

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2013

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Autism Article Date: 27 Jul 2013 - 0:00 PDT Current ratings for: 'Motion sensor' may aid autism diagnosis and treatment Scientists have developed a new screening tool that could use an individual's movement to diagnose and treat autism, according to a series of studies published in the journal Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience. Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine and Rutgers University have developed the method, which presents individuals with various images while a sensitive tracker monitors their movements. The researchers say that this method, which can be used in children over the age of three, could provide an earlier, more objective and more accurate diagnosis of autism. The method was tested on 78 children and adults with autism, including non-verbal autistic children and those with mild forms of the disorder. The researchers say that the tool correctly diagnosed all of the participants, and even diagnosed autism subtypes, identified gender differences and tracked individual progress in treatment and development. A movement tracker is attached to the individual, which senses "systemic signatures," measuring each person's movement as they respond to various screen images from an advanced computer program, showing 240 images a second. The researchers … Continue reading

Sudden decline in testosterone may cause Parkinson's

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2013

Chicago, July 27 : The results of a new study by neurological researchers at Rush University Medical Center show that a sudden decrease of testosterone, the male sex hormone, may cause Parkinson's like symptoms in male mice. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. One of the major roadblocks for discovering drugs against Parkinson's disease is the unavailability of a reliable animal model for this disease. "While scientists use different toxins and a number of complex genetic approaches to model Parkinson's disease in mice, we have found that the sudden drop in the levels of testosterone following castration is sufficient to cause persistent Parkinson's like pathology and symptoms in male mice," said Dr. Kalipada Pahan, lead author of the study and the Floyd A. Davis endowed professor of neurology at Rush. "We found that the supplementation of testosterone in the form of 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone (DHT) pellets reverses Parkinson's pathology in male mice." "In men, testosterone levels are intimately coupled to many disease processes," said Pahan. Typically, in healthy males, testosterone level is the maximum in the mid-30s, which then drop about one percent each year. However, testosterone levels may dip drastically due to stress or sudden … Continue reading
