Sudden decline in testosterone may cause Parkinson's disease symptoms in men

Public release date: 26-Jul-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Deb Song deb_song@rush.edu 312-942-0588 Rush University Medical Center (CHICAGO) The results of a new study by neurological researchers at Rush University Medical Center show that a sudden decrease of testosterone, the male sex hormone, may cause Parkinson's like symptoms in male mice. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. One of the major roadblocks for discovering drugs against Parkinson's disease is the unavailability of a reliable animal model for this disease. "While scientists use different toxins and a number of complex genetic approaches to model Parkinson's disease in mice, we have found that the sudden drop in the levels of testosterone following castration is sufficient to cause persistent Parkinson's like pathology and symptoms in male mice," said Dr. Kalipada Pahan, lead author of the study and the Floyd A. Davis endowed professor of neurology at Rush. "We found that the supplementation of testosterone in the form of 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone (DHT) pellets reverses Parkinson's pathology in male mice." "In men, testosterone levels are intimately coupled to many disease processes," said Pahan. Typically, in healthy males, testosterone level is the maximum in the mid-30s, which then drop … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy and Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Allegations Update: Resource4thePeople Reports New Study Finds Cerebral …

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2013

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 27, 2013 http://www.resource4thepeople.com/medicalmalpractice/cerebralpalsy-lawsuit.html Resource4thePeople announced today that a newly released medical research study* has found that children who are conceived through assisted conception may be at higher risk of developing cerebral palsy or other birth defects. The findings were reported in the May 5, 2013 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine based on the research of Australian medical experts based on over 300,000 births at two infertility birth clinics. "This research shows yet another link to the development of cerebral palsy in infants," said Resource4thePeople. "Unfortunately for some families such a condition or other birth defects may also occur because of medical malpractice. "We encourage any research into the cause or cure of any birth defect and in the meantime we will continue to provide parents who may be facing the prospect of paying huge amounts of medical costs to treat their children free consultations into what their legal options are to seek compensation in cases in which medical malpractice may have been involved." The Australian study found that birth defects occurred more often when intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was utilized for conception as opposed to spontaneous conception. The study focused on couples … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2013

Amanda Kierce, director of the Haggerty Community School, and her dad, Donn Hockman, Department of Public Works facility supervisor at the Cambridge Senior Center, will participate in their 11th Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Challenge Walk this September. Hockman was diagnosed with MS in 1998. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. The progression, severity and specific symptoms of MS are both unpredictable and variable. Today, new advances in research and treatment are giving new hope to those affected by the disease. To raise the much-needed funds that support both research and those living with MS, Kierce and Hockman and their Challenge Walk Team, Donns Sole Patrol, have committed to the Challenge Walk. To accomplish their fundraising goals, they have planned an event Saturday, Aug. 10. Cruising for a Cause, a scenic three-hour Charles Riverboat Cocktail Cruise, will include a buffet dinner, departing at 6:30 p.m. from the lower basin of the Charles River (across from the Royal Sonesta Hotel). Tickets are $75 each, $125 for two. Tickets for both of these events can be purchased in advance by contacting either Kierce 617-349-6264 or Hockman at 617-349-6053.
