Tech leader Duane Roth hospitalized with brain injury

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

SAN DIEGO Duane J. Roth, a prominent supporter of San Diego's tech and biotech sector, was hospitalized Sunday with brain trauma after a bicycle accident. Roth, CEO of Connect, was placed in a medically induced coma at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, said David F. Hale, a friend of Roth's. Tyler Orion, past chief operating officer of Connect, was appointed interim president Monday to support the technology entrepreneurship nonprofit during Roth's recovery. "The last I heard is that he appears to be stable at this time, and they're going to keep him in this medically induced coma for some time, a few days, and they're hoping he will be improved enough to start to come out of it," Hale said Monday afternoon. UCSD Medical Center said Roth is a patient, but declined to give any details without family permission. However, Paul Laikind, incoming chair of Connect, said Roth's family confirmed Hale's account. Ted Roth, Duane's brother, said the family appreciates prayers and good wishes, calling Duane his "best friend." Ted Roth is notable in his own right as president of Newport Beach-based Roth Capital Partners. Aside from his role at Connect, Duane Roth has long been a well-known and respected … Continue reading

Dana Vulin, who was set on fire and suffered horrific burns at her Rivervale apartment. Picture: Channel Nine Source: PerthNow A WOMAN suffered potentially fatal burns to more than half her body after she was set alight with methylated spirits by an acquaintance who was convinced she was having an affair with her estranged husband, the District Court has heard. Natalie Dimitrovska, 29, is on trial for the grievous bodily harm of Dana Vulin, who was set on fire in her Rivervale apartment in February 2012. Ms Vulin suffered full thickness burns to 60 per cent of her body and is receiving ongoing treatment. Ms Dimitrovska has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecutor Linda Petrusa told the jury that the attack was the culmination of weeks of harassment from Ms Dimitrovska, who believed her husband Edin Handanovic was staying at Ms Vulin's apartment. Ms Petrusa said Dimitrovska had previously told Ms Vulin she would "ruin her pretty little face'' and two days before the attack stormed into the apartment demanding to know where her husband was hiding. Ms Vulin had fallen asleep on her couch after a visit from a friend and woke up to the voice of a … Continue reading

Relocation to create jobs boost

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

A Surrey-based firm specialising in stem cell research is to relocate to Wales. ReNeuron has been based in Guildford, Surrey, since being founded in 1997 and markets itself as a "leading clinical-stage" business. But it will make the move across the border after securing 33.2 million to boost its operations. Of that figure, 5 million has come via the taxpayer-backed Wales Life Sciences Investment Fund and a 7.8 million grant from the Welsh Government. Business minister Edwina Hart welcomed the news saying life sciences could become a key sector in the principality's economy, adding: "I am delighted by the news that ReNeuron has decided to move to Wales. "ReNeuron is the first company in the world to have been granted permission to run clinical trials of ground-breaking stem cell technology to treat patients with stroke, one of the top three causes of death and a leading cause of adult disability in Wales. This is the second investment made by the Wales Life Sciences Investment Fund, a key component in our strategy to support the growth of the life sciences sector in Wales - one of our key priority sectors with the potential to make a significant contribution to the Welsh … Continue reading

Stem cell research firm £33.2m move

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

22 July 2013 Last updated at 10:49 ET A medical company is due to relocate to south Wales after securing 33.2m to continue its research into stem cells which can repair damaged tissue. ReNeuron has received almost 13m in Welsh government grants and investments as part of its move from Guildford. Minister Edwina Hart said life sciences was a key business sector with the "potential to make a significant contribution to the Welsh economy". The company is working on treatment for stroke patients. Bosses are planning to relocate to south Wales over the next two years, bringing 25 jobs and possibly expanding to employ about 70 people. Sir Chris Evans has made a career and a fortune out of starting up and building medical companies. He has a rare combination of skills which include a scientific background as a microbiologist and a hard-nosed sense of finance and profits. He says the companies he's set up over a 20 year period employ nearly 5,000 people in the UK. Much of his work has been in the Cambridgeshire area but Economy Minister Edwina Hart is hoping his expertise can be used to benefit the Welsh medical technology and pharmaceutical industry, running Wales' … Continue reading

Genetic Test Kit Results Vary

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

We previously reported that direct-to-consumer genetic tests can spur positive lifestyle changes, but we're back to warn you that a recent study done at Emory University in Atlanta has shown that the results of the at-home kits can vary widely. Not only that, but a Google search here at ThirdAge.com revealed that two of the companies in the study, deCODEme, and Navigenics, are no longer selling their products. However, customers who had already used the kits can still get their results, which is reason enough to pay attention to divergent findings of the Emory team! The link to deCODEme leads to a page that says: "Sales of Genetic Scans direct to consumer through deCODEme have been discontinued!" The link to Navigenics takes us to a page that says: "We are no longer accepting orders or samples for the Navigenics Health Compass service." The third company, 23andMe, is still in business. A release from Emory quotes lead researcher Cecile Janssens as confirming the demise of deCODEme and Navigencis "Although two of the companies that we studied are no longer operating, genotyping and sequencing is becoming less expensive and testing such as this is increasingly popular," she said. "The methods used for … Continue reading
