New stem cell discovery could help replace damaged organs

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

Washington, July 21 (ANI): Researchers have found a key role for a protein called BMI1, which may help scientists develop tissues to replace damaged organs in the human body. Ophir Klein, MD, PhD, who directs the Craniofacial and Mesenchymal Biology (CMB) Program and serves as chair of the Division of Craniofacial Anomalies at UCSF, said that the scientists have known that Bmi1 is a central control switch within the adult stem cells of many tissues, including the brain, blood, lung and mammary gland. He said that Bmi1 also is a cancer-causing gene that becomes reactivated in cancer cells. Klein's research group now has shown that BMI1 plays another role in ensuring that the process of development unfolds normally. The hallmarks of all stem cells are that they are immature, they keep dividing to replenish their numbers almost indefinitely, and they generate new specialized cells to function in the tissues in which they reside, a process called cell differentiation. Pushed in one direction, the BMI1 switch enables normal stem cells to divide and renew their own numbers. Thrown in the other direction, it keeps cell proliferation in check. But now, Klein's research team has shown that BMI1 also keeps this stock … Continue reading

Desperate pet owners turn to stem cell treatments

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

by Jared Dillingham azfamily.com Posted on July 20, 2013 at 10:38 AM Updated yesterday at 11:53 PM SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- An increasing number of pet owners are turning to stem cells to treat everything from arthritis to allergies. "It was horrific to watch him unable to walk or wag his tail," Sarah Denning said of her then 6-year-old dog, Gary, who suffered from disc problems in his lower back. He was in constant pain. Denning was about to have Gary euthanized, when her veterinarian, Dr. Tom Newland, at the Adobe Animal Hospital in Scottsdale, suggested they try a stem cell treatment. Two weeks later, Gary showed signs of improvement. In another month, he was a new dog. "He started running and playing with other dogs. That was beyond expectations," she said. Dr. Newland is one of a handful of Valley veterinarians who use stem cells to treat his four-legged patients. Autism program rollout changed; Pentagon hears complaints from service families

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

The Pentagon on Thursday eased some concerns among military families worried that a new pilot program would interrupt treatment for their autistic children. Some active-duty families had feared the 12-month program, which will begin Thursday to provide special behavioral treatment for autistic children, would be unwieldy for service members who change duty assignments. The program requires testing every six months. For any active-duty family member currently enrolled in the [extended care program], there is no change in their requirements on July 25. They can continue to get the same care under the same rules going forward, Dr. Jonathan Woodson, assistant defense secretary for health affairs, said during a conference call with reporters. For all of the existing programs, there is no plan to implement more rigorous requirements during the next year, Dr. Woodson said. We are apologetic to the autism community because we know there has been some controversy over the issue. The pilot program focuses on an intensive therapy for autism called applied behavioral analysis, or ABA treatment. It was mandated by the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act in order to study how ABA can be made available to military family members under Tricare, the militarys health care system. … Continue reading

Brain-damaged mum wins compo fight

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

A young mum left severely brain-damaged after botched hospital treatment during childbirth has won compensation after a seven-year battle. Auckland woman Joanna Louise Crampton, 37, was admitted to North Shore Hospital two days before Christmas in 2005 to give birth to her third son. She suffered a "catastrophic" amniotic fluid embolism - a rare emergency in which debris enters the body during childbirth. The hospital was severely criticised for its "monumental failure" in the case. Crampton's family has been battling the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), which declined a 2006 claim because it said the injuries were as a result of an "unpredictable complication", rather than a lack of treatment. But after seven years, that fight is finally over, with an Auckland District Court judge overturning ACC's decision. It is not clear what Crampton's compensation will be. Her former husband, Damian Crampton, said lawyers are still discussing the figure. He told the Sunday Star-Times that his former wife now lives at a West Auckland residential rehabilitation centre for people with traumatic brain injuries. "We still go visit her," he said. Damian Crampton has since remarried and raises their three children with his new wife. In a decision released last month, Judge … Continue reading

Withholding estrogen therapy cost tens of thousands of lives

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

Editor's Choice Academic Journal Main Category: Women's Health / Gynecology Also Included In: Menopause Article Date: 20 Jul 2013 - 0:00 PDT Current ratings for: Withholding estrogen therapy cost tens of thousands of lives 5 (2 votes) Nearly 50,000 women died unnecessarily over the last ten years because estrogen therapy was not given to patients aged 50 to 69 who had undergone a hysterectomy after the 2002 Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study. In 2002, doctors and patients were seriously put off using HRT (hormone replacement therapy) because two trials - HERS and WHI - suggested that one type might raise the risk of cardiovascular problems. Up to that time, HRT had been seen as the savior for women who were in medical menopause; those who had undergone hysterectomy. Dr. Philip Sarrel, emeritus professor in the Departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, and Psychiatry, Yale University, and colleagues gathered and analyzed U.S. census data and hysterectomy rates, and estimated how much hormone replacement therapy had declined among female patients aged 50 to 59 between 2002 and 2011. Before 2002, over 90% of these patients had been prescribed estrogen-only therapy for medical menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, as well as to … Continue reading

Estrogen Could Save Lives

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2013

Getty Images / Getty Images For more than a decade, doctors have cautioned women about the risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. But those warnings may have put one group of women at increased risk of dying early, according to the latest study. Researchers at Yale University say that nearly 50,000 women may have died prematurely after they stopped taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat menopause symptoms, following a much-publicized 2002 study that revealed the treatment increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer. The 2002 Womens Health Initiative(WHI) study, a 15 year investigation into the factors that contribute to the health of post menopausal women, was stopped three years early when a preliminary review of the data showed that women taking the combination of estrogen and progestin had a higher rate of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke than women taking a placebo. The results stunned both the public and the medical community, since doctors had been prescribing the hormones not just to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, but for extended periods of time to protect women against heart disease. Almost immediately, doctors and public health officials began shifting women away from such long term use … Continue reading
