Injecting iron supplement lets scientists track transplanted stem cells

Posted: Published on July 14th, 2013

July 12, 2013 A new, noninvasive technique for tracking stem cells after transplantation -- developed by a cross-disciplinary team of radiologists, chemists, statisticians and materials scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine -- could help surgeons determine whether a procedure to repair injured or worn-out knees is successful. The technique, described in a study to be published online July 12 in Radiology, relies on an imaging agent already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an entirely different purpose: anemia treatment. Although this study used rodents, the approach is likely to be adapted for use in humans this fall as part of a clinical trial in which mesenchymal stem cells will be delivered to the site of patients' knee injuries. Mesenchymal stem cells are capable of differentiating into bone and cartilage, as well as muscle, fat and tendon, but not into the other cell types that populate the body. Every year, arthritis accounts for 44 million outpatient visits and 700,000 knee-replacement procedures. But the early repair of cartilage defects in young patients may prevent further deterioration of the joint and the need for knee replacement later in life, said the study's senior author, Heike Daldrup-Link, MD, PhD, … Continue reading

Mumbai, July 12: Belgium-based drug maker UCB has challenged Glenmarks attempt to sell its generic version of Vimpat, used in the treatment of epilepsy, in the US. The legal suit followed Glenmarks filing in the US seeking regulatory approvals to sell its generically-similar version of the UCB drug. The filing was a patent challenge, or a para IV filing. Confirming the development, Glenmark said that UCB filed a suit against Glenmark Generics Ltd and Glenmark Generics Inc on July 10, in the United States District Court (Delaware), seeking to prevent Glenmark from commercialising its generic product prior to the expiration of UCBs patent in the US. If Glenmark succeeds in its patent challenge, it would get a 180-day exclusivity for its products. According to foreign media reports, UCB has challenged at least 13 other generic drug-makers over this drug. Its described as potentially fatal the young victims have seizures frequently and for extended periods of time. Last Tuesday, for example, on what was any other day at home, Kaitlyn had an hour-long episode. You feel helpless all you can do is stand and watch, theres nothing you can do to help your child, Kaitlyns father, Barry, told Global News. Effect of white-matter lesions on the risk of periprocedural stroke after carotid artery stenting versus …

Posted: Published on July 13th, 2013

The Lancet Neurology, Early Online Publication, 12 July 2013 Copyright 2013Elsevier LtdAll rights reserved. Findings from randomised trials have shown a higher early risk of stroke after carotid artery stenting than after carotid endarterectomy. We assessed whether white-matter lesions affect the perioperative risk of stroke in patients treated with carotid artery stenting versus carotid endarterectomy. 1036 patients (536 randomly allocated to carotid artery stenting, 500 to carotid endarterectomy) had baseline imaging available. Median ARWMC score was 7, and patients were dichotomised into those with a score of 7 or more and those with a score of less than 7. In patients treated with carotid artery stenting, those with an ARWMC score of 7 or more had an increased risk of stroke compared with those with a score of less than 7 (HR for any stroke 276, 95% CI 117651; p=0021; HR for non-disabling stroke 300, 110836; p=0031), but we did not see a similar association in patients treated with carotid endarterectomy (HR for any stroke 118, 040355; p=076; HR for disabling or fatal stroke 141, 038526; p=0607). Carotid artery stenting was associated with a higher risk of stroke compared with carotid endarterectomy in patients with an ARWMC score of 7 … Continue reading

Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center’s Youngest Patient Praises New "Sci-Fi" Procedure

Posted: Published on July 13th, 2013

PHOENIX, July 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --First experiencing symptoms at just 29-years-old and diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 34, Tommy Zuleger is the youngest patient ever treated at the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix and he says a new "sci-fi" procedure has given him his life back. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130712/LA46804) The real estate executive recently underwent a new procedure at Barrow called Asleep Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), which involves surgically implanting a medical device, called a "brain pacemaker," while the patient is under general anesthesia. In select brain regions, DBS has provided remarkable therapeutic benefits for otherwise treatment-resistant movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia. "At first it was nothing major; my right hand would shake," recalls Zuleger, now 38. "But over time the shaking grew worse, I started to feel stiffer than a thirty-something. At thirty-four-years-old, I learned I had Parkinson's." Parkinson's disease is generally thought of as a disease affecting the elderly, but the National Parkinson Foundation reports more people are being diagnosed with the disease at a younger age. Approximately 10 percent of the one million people living with the disease in the United States are under the age of 40. Zuleger … Continue reading
