Local hospital recognized for excellence in stroke care

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2013

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Bristol Regional Medical Center was honored Thursday by the American Heart Association with the Gold Plus award for stroke care. That means BRMC has met national standards for treating stroke victims for two consecutive years. However, the hospital is just one part of treating a stroke, and preventing permanent brain damage. In simple terms, a stroke happens when blood flow is restricted to a part of the brain, which can lead to parts of the brain wither and die. Doctors say speed in treatment is key. "We have a time problem. We have to treat [patients] within 3 hours, preferably, " said Dr. Earl Wilson, a neurologist and medical director of Bristol Regional Medical Center's Primary Stroke Center. Treatment in that 180 minute window often starts with emergency workers. " The quicker you can start the advanced medical treatment out in the field, the better off the patient is,"said Bristol, Tenn. assistant fire chief Jack Spurgeon. Knowing the symptoms of a stroke can help patients before they get to the hospital. Here is the original post: Local hospital recognized for excellence in stroke care … Continue reading

12 Jul 2013 00:00 The money, raised over the last four years, was supposed to pay for pioneering stem cell treatment that could have helped Dan walk SWNS A disabled boy meets the paralysed man who gave up his dream of walking again in order to help the youngster take his first steps. Selfless Dan Black who was left in a wheelchair by a 2009 cycling accident has given 20,000 to Brecon Vaughan, five. The money, raised over the last four years, was supposed to pay for pioneering stem cell treatment that could have helped Dan, 25, get back on his feet. However, after reading about the plight of Brecon, who suffers from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, Dan decided the boy had a better chance of walking so handed the money to him instead. Brecons parents have described Dans generosity as phenomenal and a huge boost towards the 60,000 needed for an operation which will allow their son to walk unaided. Dan, from Chepstow the same Welsh town as Brecon said: For me, things are not getting better soon. "I wanted to help someone whose life could get better. If I can help someone to walk, I will. Most Common Catastrophic Injuries in San Francisco Plane Crash

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2013

As a San Francisco personal injury attorney, over the years, I have seen many brain injuries and spinal injuries, fractures, burns, internal injuries and wrongful deaths. In any community, we attorneys will be exposed to these serious personal injuries over time; however, catastrophic injuries are actually not all that common to the every attorney. What is shocking about the Asiana Airlines crash is how in the space of mere seconds, so many people sustained so many catastrophic injuries. We know that plane crashes are horrific, and we are usually all saddened by the tragic loss of life. We count those in this crash at SFO as lucky because we only have two fatalities so far. But what about the severe life-altering injuries sustained by so many on board? Yes, the passengers have survived, however the toll of catastrophic injuries is very very high. For example, this recent airplane Korean Asiana Airline crash at SFO, resulted in over 180 injuries. Among those serious personal injuries treated by local hospitals were fractured spines, stretched and torn ligaments, internal bleeding, severe fractures needing surgical repair, compound fractures, road rash and head injuries, many permanent and all requiring long-term treatment. Chief Executive Sue Currin … Continue reading

Finding a balance in menopause: Lasting confusion over the safety of hormone replacement therapy has kept too many …

By Julie Deardorff Chicago Tribune After a decade of rancorous debate over the risks and benefits of menopausal hormone therapy, experts from more than a dozen top medical organizations worldwide have finally come to something resembling a consensus. What did they decide, and why are women still baffled? Menopausal hormone therapy, also called hormone replacement therapy, is a treatment for women in the throes of menopause, the inevitable period of life when estrogen naturally declines. Taking estrogen or a combination of estrogen and another hormone, progestin, the synthetic form of progesterone, can alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and vaginal dryness, said Atlanta endocrinologist Scott Experts mostly agree that for most women the plusses of Hormone Replacement Therapy outweigh overstated risks. ( Camille Weber ) Hormone therapy has been under intense scrutiny since 2002, when a large study called the Women's Health Initiative reported that taking additional hormones -- specifically the combination of estrogen and progestin -- increased the risk of blood clots, stroke, breast cancer, heart attacks and gall bladder disease for some women. For a woman with a uterus, estrogen treatment alone raises her chance of getting endometrial cancer. The researchers … Continue reading
