Hope for soft-tissue trauma, disease

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013

A MELBOURNE breakthrough has paved the way for cell transplants to grow new muscles and provides hope of overcoming muscular dystrophy and soft-tissue cancers. The world-first discovery also raises the potential to one day regrow tissue lost in serious accidents or convince the body to develop bigger and stronger muscles. A team from St Vincent's Hospital pioneered a method of printing out strands of genetically altered muscle cells combined with a seaweed extract, which they have successfully transplanted into mice and caused them to grow new muscles. The breakthrough could help people with muscular dystrophy and those who have had muscle loss through diseases such as cancer. Lead researcher Assoc Prof Robert Kapsa said the discovery was an exciting step, but warned there was a long way to go before it was known if the treatment would be effective in humans. "We have orientated this work towards things like loss of muscle due to soft-tissue cancers, surgical removal or people who have undergone some sort of trauma, who are able to have a piece of this seaweed substance filled with their own cells, and you can then grow a piece of their muscle back," he said. "What we are looking … Continue reading

Montclair autism center stresses coordinated efforts

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013

Andrew Kitchenman, NJ SPOTLIGHT Posted: Wednesday, July 10, 2013, 1:07 AM Studying and treating autism poses daunting challenges - but the difficult task could made easier if researchers and health-care providers who work with autistic children coordinate their efforts. New Jersey officials and health-care leaders credited the new Montclair State University Autism Center for Excellence for emphasizing such an approach, as new grants were announced by the state council that funds autism research. The center, launched last year, encourages health-care providers and autism researchers to work together to speed up development of new treatments. A total of $4.5 million was awarded by the state in June to seven projects, ranging from research to examine biological markers that could be used to identify children with autism to a study of the transportation needs of those with autism. The largest grant award - $2.25 million over five years - was given to Children's Specialized Hospital to develop a new autism screening tool for diagnosing children from culturally diverse families. Hospital chief executive officer Amy Mansue said increased coordination among institutions has practical benefits. Traditionally, when institutions receive grants, "we spend all of our time in the administering of those elements of the … Continue reading

Think FAST when it comes to stroke

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Canada. The Vancouver Island Health Authority urges residents to know the signs of stroke and get help as quickly as possible. Quick diagnosis and treatment of a stroke changes the outcome for a patient; and knowing the warning signs of stroke can ensure that every second counts. Remember, think FAST: The bottom line is, if you notice sudden loss of strength or numbness in the face, arm or leg; sudden difficulty speaking or confusion; or a sudden severe and unusual headache, call 9-1-1. If you treat stroke patients quickly, before there is irreversible damage to the brain, they can recover completely, said stroke researcher and neurologist Dr. Andrew Penn. The miracle treatment is a clot-buster called tPA, which is a naturally occurring protein that breaks up blood clots. If you remove the blockage, blood can flow freely again, Penn adds. The Vancouver Island Health Authority continues to build on its success. The Stroke Rapid Assessment Unit, which intervenes after people develop warning signs of impending stroke, has treated over 12,000 patients from the breadth of the island since 2005, sharply reducing hospitalization for stroke. Toronto and Calgary are … Continue reading

Only handful of Southwestern Ontario hospitals can give stroke victims clot-busting drug

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013

Only four of 28 hospitals in Southwestern Ontario can give stroke victims a clot-busting drug that could be critical to their recovery. The lack of care delays treatment and has created a system one Strathroy man calls disgusting after his wifes treatment was pushed back about an hour she later died. Helen Veale was 74-years-old when she awakened on an April morning, tried to stand up and collapsed, her face contorted. Her husband Jerry Veale suspected stroke and phoned 911. Paramedics arrived in minutes, debated whether to take her to Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, just five minutes away, or Londons University Hospital, deciding on the former. Forty-five minutes later doctors in Strathroy confirmed she has suffered a common stroke caused by a clot and that she had to be taken to London for treatment. A procedure in London later failed and Helen Veale died 16 days later, leaving behind two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Perhaps she would have died anyway but Jerry Veale is outraged stroke victims are subjected to delays because local hospitals cant care for them. Its absolutely disgusting, he told The Free Press Wednesday. Any delay is a concern: Experts estimate two million neurons die each minute … Continue reading
