Parkinson's Treatment With Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Neurons Shows Promise

Dr. D. Eugene Redmond, Yale University School of Medicine, said "Parkinson's disease was one of the first neurological disorders to be studied for potential replacement of lost neurons. Since the 1970s there has been significant progress with learning the required gene expression, growth factors and culture conditions for differentiating cells into apparent dopamine neurons." However, the authors explained that there have been disappointing results when transplanting dopamine neurons into rodents or monkeys - they did not become long-lasting midbrain specific neurons. They added that "there have only been pilot reports of functional improvement". In this study, the scientists assessed the long-term survival of apparent dopamine neurons in monkeys modeled with Parkinson's-like symptoms. They also tested the functional benefit of the new neurons. The authors found, as in previous studies, that gene expression of TH (tyrosine hydroxylase) … Continue reading

Britain pushes ahead with ‘three-parent’ IVF

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2013

Britain took a step closer on Friday to becoming the first country to allow radical treatment that uses DNA from three parents to create an embryo. The government backed an IVF-based technique designed to avoid serious mitochondrial diseases inherited on the maternal side, such as muscular dystrophy and cardiac problems. Mitochondria are the structures within cells that convert energy from food into a form that the body can use. The technique would replace some of the unhealthy DNA with healthy DNA from the so-called "third parent". "It's only right that we look to introduce this life-saving treatment as soon as we can," said Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England. Although there were "clearly some sensitive issues here", Davies said she was "personally very comfortable" with the technique. Parliament is due to debate the regulations next year, opening the way for the treatment to be offered to at-risk women. One in 200 children is born each year with a form of disease in their mitochondrial DNA. Scientists are developing a technique to remove some of the mitochondrial DNA of the mother and replace it with DNA from a second woman to create a healthy embryo. Transmitted through the maternal … Continue reading

Viable Parkinson’s disease treatment identified

Washington, June 29 (ANI): A team of researchers from Rush University, Yale University, the University of Colorado and the St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation transplanted human embryonic stem cells into primate laboratory animals modeled with Parkinson's disease and found "robust survival" of the cells after six weeks and indications that the cells were "well integrated" into the host animals. "Parkinson's disease was one of the first neurological disorders to be studied for potential replacement of lost neurons," Dr. D. Eugene Redmond of Yale University School of Medicine, said. "Since the 1970s there has been significant progress with learning the required gene expression, growth factors and culture conditions for differentiating cells into apparent dopamine neurons," he said. However, the researchers noted that transplanted dopamine neurons have not produced "long-lasting midbrain specific neurons when transplanted into rodents or monkeys" and there have only been pilot reports of functional improvement. According to the study authors, their study tested the long-term survival and functional benefit of apparent dopamine neurons in monkeys modeled with Parkinson's disease. As with other studies, their results found that the gene expression of the rate limiting synthetic enzyme for dopamine production, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), was "transient" after transplantation, raising questions … Continue reading

30 Jun 2013 21:00 Mandy Cooper needs to collect 16,000 to pay for specialist treatment in America for two-year-old Kiaryn A doting Moseley mother is to stage a fun day to fund revolutionary stem cell treatment for her son, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Mandy Cooper is trying to raise 16,000 to pay for two-year-old Kiaryn to be helped by specialists in America. The 26-year-old, who has already raised 850 through an on-line auction, holds the fun day at Moseley Rugby Club on Saturday, July 27. The day will feature a bouncy castle, go-karts and bungee run. Kiaryn, who attends Victoria Special School, Northfield, cannot walk, talk or even sit unaided. Mandy hopes the 10,000 treatment will repair damaged brain cells and improve her sons quality of life. It is not available in the UK. Poster for Kiaryn's Fun Day She said: I want to do anything I can to help Kiaryn. Hopefully, we can raise enough money so that he can get the treatment he needs. Why no meat, no dairy and meditation every day COULD be the key to conquering MS

RACHEL PORTER's husband Jon was diagnosed with MS ten years ago Now a new diet could help him cope with MS and maybe beat it Diet bans meat and dairy and most saturated fats By Rachel Porter PUBLISHED: 16:00 EST, 29 June 2013 | UPDATED: 16:08 EST, 29 June 2013 674 shares 53 View comments Every year, more than 2,500 Britons are told they have multiple sclerosis. If they ask what it means, theyre likely to be given the textbook definition: its a progressively disabling, incurable, neurological illness. Theyll be told that pain, disability and a range of distressing symptoms are in their future. How bad it gets, how quickly it happens its not possible to predict. But theres not a lot they can do, except take the drugs available. That was the experience of my husband, Jon, when he was diagnosed ten years ago. He has relapsing-remitting MS, which means symptoms appear during a relapse, then fade partially or completely. New hope: Rachel Porter and her husband Jon, who was diagnosed with MS ten years ago, hope the new diet can change it all Continue reading here: Why no meat, no dairy and meditation every day COULD be the … Continue reading

Nearly 3,000 Hit The Streets For ‘Bike MS’

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2013

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) CBS4s team hit the streets pedaling for the annual Bike MS ride on Saturday. The ride raises money for the Colorado-Wyoming chapter of the National MS Society. Early Saturday morning nearly 3,000 bicyclists made their way from Westminster to Fort Collins. Its all part of a 2-day ride for Bike MS. Every mile is making a difference in research and treatment for multiple sclerosis. This is one of the best bike rides and they know it and they know that its for the best cause, Carrie Nolan with the MS Society said. Audrey Blank has been battling the disease since 2007. It was actually a relief to finally get the diagnosis because then I knew we could do something about it, Blank said. With the amazing research and monies raised with the National MS Society, were making huge strides. Thats because cyclists like John Fedak are going the distance. This is my 28th ride, Fedak said. This year I rode to New Jersey from here and raised a few extra bucks more than I usually do I feel that Im doing some good and if I can get anybody aware, even one more person, its going to … Continue reading
