(PRNewsFoto/Karmanos Cancer Institute) DETROIT The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Centers Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Program has received full accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, the highest level and the most extensive spectrum of accreditation offered by FACT for Bone Marrow Transplant Programs. This includes accreditation for both adult and pediatric clinical programs, apheresis collection, marrow harvest collection and stem cell processing. The accreditation is effective for three years beginning Sept. 30, 2012. Additionally, Karmanos BMT program, the largest of its kind in Michigan, was honored with an award for being a site that has maintained continuous FACT accreditation for 10 years or more. Karmanos first FACT accreditation was received in 2000. Study sets guidelines for stem cell transplants in older patients with myelodysplastic syndromes

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2013

June 24, 2013 A new study by an international team led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists provides the first statistically-based guidelines for determining whether a stem cell transplant is appropriate for older patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) -- the most common blood disorders in people over 60 years of age, and frequently a precursor for leukemia. Using mathematical models to analyze hundreds of MDS cases from around the world, the researchers found reduced intensity transplants of donor stem cells are advisable for patients aged 60-70 who have higher-risk forms of MDS that are likely to turn into leukemia in the near future. For patients with lower-risk MDS, non-transplant treatments are preferable, the model indicates. The research was reported online today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. "Our study helps inform older MDS patients and their doctors whether a stem cell transplant is preferred or whether it makes more sense to pursue other options," says John Koreth, MBBS, DPhil, medical oncologist in the Division of Hematologic Malignancies at Dana-Farber, who is the study's lead author and co-principal investigator (with Joseph Pidala, MD, MS, of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute, and senior author Corey Cutler, MD, MPH, of the … Continue reading

Was Stem Cell therapy behind death of 3 Solons?

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2013

Manila, Philippines --- Several congressmen have indeed undergone stem cell therapy in Germany and two of them died while serving the 15th Congress. This was gathered from several sources as one outgoing congressman disclosed that a group of Mindanao mayors are set to depart for Europe to visit stem cell clinics in Germany. ''But virility and aesthetic enhancements are the reasons for the trip,'' said outgoing Agham Party-list Rep. Angelo Palmones in an interview yesterday. Palmones admitted that one of the veteran solons who died during the 15th Congress was a stem cell therapy patient but whether or not the procedure contributed to his death remains unknown. ''He died of heart attack but the purpose of his stem cell treatment was to improve virility,'' said Palmones, outgoing vice chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology. Two others reportedly flew to Europe to seek treatment for cancer but both died. A former broadcaster, Palmones authored House Resolution No. 1075 calling for a congressional investigation in aid of legislation on the operation of stem cell therapy clinics in malls in a bid to ensure the ''safety and security of patients.'' In a press statement the other day, the Philippine Medical … Continue reading

The overall safety of Mycamine was assessed in 479 patients, ages three days through 16 years, who received at least one dose of Mycamine in 11 separate clinical trials. Americord Applauds Study on Stem Cell Therapy for Congenital Heart Defects

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2013

NEW YORK, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Americord today applauded a new study being conducted by Mayo Clinic to determine whether children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) can be successfully treated with stem cells from their own umbilical cord blood. HLHS is a congenital heart defect where infants are born with a severely underdeveloped left ventricle essentially half a heart. Mayo Clinic is a non-profit worldwide leader in medical care, research and education that spends over $500 million a year on research and employs nearly 3,800 physicians and scientists. In the United States, about 1,000 babies are born each year with HLHS. Babies with HLHS have heart valves that are either too small to allow sufficient blood flow, or valves that are closed altogether. In the study being done by Mayo Clinic, umbilical cord blood stem cells will be collected from infants born with HLHS, and they will be preserved. Approximately four to six months later, the stem cells will be injected directly into the infant's heart muscle. Since stem cells are able to develop into many different kinds of cell types found in the human body, researchers are hopeful that this treatment will increase the strength and volume of … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment seen as likely cause of three politicians' deaths

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2013

Three politicians from Mindanao had reportedly died after receiving stem cell treatment in Germany, although it was not established yet if the deaths were directly connected to the treatment, the head of the biggest association of doctors in the country said Monday. According to Leo Olarte of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), the politicians may have died due to "anaphylactic shock" following a hypersensitivity reaction to the stem cells from animals, especially sheep. Anaphylaxis is a deadly allergic reaction that causes difficulty in breathing and sudden drop in blood pressure. "Kapag ikaw ay nabigyan ng stem cell galing sa tupa, aatakihin ng katawan 'yan kasi ito ay hindi inherent sa katawan... Magkakaroon ng hypersensitivity reaction na magdudulot ng anaphylactic shock sa pasyente," Olarte said in a phone interview with GMA News Online. He also cited possible death due to delayed graft function, which is a complication after an organ transplantation. The politicians, who were not identified as requested by their families, had illnesses in the lungs, heart and liver before the treatment, Olarte said. However, he was quick to add that it has yet to be proven if the stem cell treatment was the real cause of the three politicians' … Continue reading
