Autism spectrum disorder

30 May 2013 | The growing number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder is an issue of concern both in Australia and overseas, argues this report. Summary The growing number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an issue of concern both in Australia and overseas. This concern is reflected in the 2008 resolution of the United Nations General Assembly for a World Autism Awareness Day (held on 2 April). More detailed concerns have been outlined in recent parliamentary debates here and elsewhere. Description ASD is a developmental disorder that emerges in early childhood and is characterised by impairments in social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour and interests. As indicated by the word spectrum, the nature and severity of ASD and its impact on levels of functioning can vary widely from one person to another. The disorder is much more common in males than females. The causes of ASD are not yet clear but it appears that it is caused by a combination of genetic and other risk factors. The diagnostic criteria for ASDs are outlined in American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and in the World Health Organizations International … Continue reading

Fighting disease a family affair

BOULARDERIE EAST When Alyssa MacLeod walks into the room, her face breaks into a megawatt smile. There is a slight break to her stride, something not quite perfect, yet purposeful and determined. MacLeod has fire and passion and more determination than many 22-year-olds could even imagine. On this day, she has her father at her side, just like always. Fathers Day seems like an appropriate time to talk about her years of surgeries, treatments and physiotherapy aimed at helping her live better with cerebral palsy. My mother stayed home to look after my younger sister, and my father travelled to Montreal with me since I was three years old, MacLeod said. Out of 47 trips to the Shriners hospital in Montreal, my dad only missed one, and that was because he was out west working. Her father, Richard MacLeod, looks with pride at his slight, pretty daughter. Its difficult to see your little girl go through what she has, but it was definitely worth all the work. Alyssa is one of 100 patients with cerebral palsy who underwent what is called selective dorsal rhizotomy 19 years ago at the Montreal hospital. MHI-MS Licenses Electrostatic Precipitator Technology to Tecpro Systems of India

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Tokyo, June 17, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems, Ltd. (MHI-MS), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has concluded an agreement with Tecpro Systems Limited (Tecpro), an Indian firm mainly engaged in material and ash handling systems and balance of plant (BoP) equipment, under which MHI-MS is to provide electrostatic precipitator (EP) technology to the Indian licensee. The licensing arrangement targets collaborative and proactive exploration of local demand for high-performance EPs, which are now marking growth in tandem with India's increasing number of new coal-fired power plants and ironworks. Under the agreement, MHI-MS will provide Tecpro with technology related to EP engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). With this advanced technology, Tecpro aims to accommodate a wide variety of EP needs in India, including such applications as coal-fired boilers for power generation or industrial uses and incorporation into production processes at ironworks. Tecpro's head office is located in Chennai. Since its establishment in 1990, the company has achieved steady business expansion by aggressively introducing overseas technologies: for example, coal unloading and conveying systems and large-size blowers. The company has established a solid position in its Indian market as an EPC company in the BoP … Continue reading

Findings Presented at ENDO 2013 Support Therapeutic Potential of Natpara® as Parathyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy …

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

BEDMINSTER, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NPSP), a biopharmaceutical company pioneering and delivering therapies that transform the lives of patients with rare diseases worldwide, yesterday presented findings supporting the therapeutic potential of Natpara (recombinant full-length human parathyroid hormone or rhPTH [1-84]) in poster sessions at ENDO 2013, The Endocrine Societys 95th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. Natpara is a bioengineered replica of human parathyroid hormone that is being developed by NPS for adults with hypoparathyroidism, a rare and complex endocrine disorder that is characterized by insufficient levels of parathyroid hormone, the bodys principal regulator of calcium and phosphorus. These findings suggest Natpara may provide an important new treatment option for patients with hypoparathyroidism by improving the calcium and phosphorus mineral imbalance associated with this complex disorder while significantly reducing the dependence on calcium and vitamin D supplementation, said Roger Garceau, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer of NPS Pharmaceuticals. Our growing collection of clinical data for Natpara supports its therapeutic potential as the first replacement therapy targeting the underlying cause of adult hypoparathyroidism and we look forward to filing our U.S. Biologic License Application later this year. Hypoparathyroidism is the only classic endocrine disorder without an FDA-approved … Continue reading

Life Technologies Expands Range of Stem Cell Reprogramming Solutions

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

CARLSBAD, Calif., June 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Life Technologies Corporation (LIFE) today announced the launch of Epi5 Episomal iPSC Reprogramming Vectors, the world's first product to be fully commercialized based on technology that won its developers a Nobel Prize in 2012 for the ability to easily reprogram adult human cells into an early embryonic state. Scientists use induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to create iPSCs from patient-derived adult somatic cells. The iPSCs can then be differentiated into many cell types, such as neurons and hepatocytes, to be studied in the lab. The ease-of-use and reprogramming efficiency of Epi5 Episomal iPSC Reprogramming Vectors helps accelerate the process for applications in basic research and pre-clinical studies. "You can give rise to iPSCs at a high efficiency rate by using the Epi5Episomal iPSC ReprogrammingKit," said Dr. Keisuke Okita, Lecturer, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, Kyoto University, who helped developed the Nobel Prize-winning technology with Dr. Shinya Yamanaka."We are delighted to see that Life Technologies is taking the lead to make it available and we hope that many researchers will use it to advance research in areas such as pathology, drug discovery and stem cell biology." While other reprogramming vectors have been … Continue reading

Qatar in breakthrough diabetes stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Manama: A potentially significant breakthrough in the treatment of diabetes has been made by a team of Qatar-based scientists. The scientists at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), in collaboration with researchers at Imperial College London, have reportedly discovered a new way to instruct isolated stem cells in a laboratory setting to secrete insulin when it is needed to maintain the correct sugar level in the bodys circulation. Diabetes is a world-wide health problem, and it is especially prevalent in Qatar, Dr Abdul Ali Haoudi, the Executive Director of QBRI and a co-author of the study, said. People with diabetes face serious medical complications, including heart disease and kidney failure. This discovery has the potential to reduce this burden by harnessing the bodys own stem cells to secrete insulin as needed to maintain proper blood sugar levels in the body. This research represents the first promising steps toward a new treatment, but it will need to go through the clinical validation before it is declared a viable therapy, he said. The findings have just been published in Molecular Therapy-Nucleic Acids, the official journal of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. Dr Nagy Habib, Scientific Director of the Stem Cell … Continue reading
