Franklin aims to require cold remedy prescriptions

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Franklin County, Tenn., is just a few readings away from rules making pseudoephedrine-based cold medicines available only by prescription. Cowan, Decherd and Estill Springs are the remaining municipalities in the county set to pass new rules on pseudoephedrine-based cold medicines as law enforcement takes a new step in the battle against methamphetamine. Pseudoephedrine is the primary ingredient in meth production. "The only way it's going to be successful is if the entire region does this," Winchester police Chief Dennis Young said. The new, countywide rules will be a first among Tennessee counties. Young said officials from Franklin County are meeting with neighboring counties, Grundy County being the next stop over the next few days. Young said pharmacy statistics show meth makers have been heading for Tennessee in droves to get their ingredients. In the past year, about 780,000 people bought pseudoephedrine in Tennessee. Pharmacy sales records show tens of thousands of people come from Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi to get the precursor chemical in Tennessee. "Tennessee this year is reclaiming No. 1 in the nation in the production of meth," Young said. Missouri was the top-ranking state, but more than 70 cities in Southern Missouri implemented regulations similar to those … Continue reading

Family doctors do not hand out antidepressants 'like sweets'

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Finally, and contrary to common perceptions, antidepressants probably work better than psychological therapies. The situation, in short, is not as alarming as it might appear which is reassuring for all concerned. ................. There is yet more to the phenomenon of the apparently fit and healthy being diagnosed with diabetes than as mentioned in this column last week the recent switch from the commonsensical criterion of a raised blood-sugar level to the obscure (if supposedly more sensitive) measurement of glycated haemoglobin. This week, Dr Aleesa Carter and colleagues at Toronto General Hospital, in a major study of almost half a million patients, confirm that the current epidemic of diabetes is also, at least in part, medically induced (or iatrogenic), caused by the mass prescription of cholesterol-lowering statins. This is almost certainly a biological problem attributed to their adverse effects on the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas with the risk of diabetes rising with the dose and potency of the type of statin prescribed. The absolute risk remains small, but, with seven million people currently taking statins in Britain, adds up to a staggering 27,450 additional cases of diabetes over a four-year period. The phenomenal scale of this unintended adverse effect (predictably, … Continue reading

Drug to treat osteoporosis prevents growth of breast cancer cells

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

A drug approved in Europe to treat osteoporosis has now been shown to stop the growth of breast cancer cells, even in cancers that have become resistant to current targeted therapies. The findings by Duke Cancer Institute indicate that the drug bazedoxifene packs a powerful one-two punch that not only prevents estrogen from fueling breast cancer cell growth, but also flags the estrogen receptor for destruction. We found bazedoxifene binds to the estrogen receptor and interferes with its activity, but the surprising thing we then found was that it also degrades the receptor; it gets rid of it, senior author Donald McDonnell, PhD, chair of Dukes Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, said. In animal and cell culture studies, the drug inhibited growth both in estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells and in cells that had developed resistance to the anti-estrogen tamoxifen and/or to the aromatase inhibitors, two of the most widely used types of drugs to prevent and treat estrogen-dependent breast cancer. Currently, if breast cancer cells develop resistance to these therapies, patients are usually treated with toxic chemotherapy agents that have significant side effects. Because the drug is removing the estrogen receptor as a target by degradation, it is less … Continue reading

Roadside Drug Testing Proposed In West Virginia

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) June 17, 2013 According to the Associated Press (2/17), West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is proposing changing state law to allow police officers the legal right to test drivers for drugs, just as they test them for alcohol. Currently, the laws in West Virginia allow only for alcohol testing, but the new legislation proposed, would permit police to test drivers for drugs. In West Virginia, drugged driving problem is very significant. One in ten adults in the state have a drug problem and the testing would help authorities bring abusers to justice. About 1,000 drivers or 10% of those arrested for DUI, were arrested throughout the state last year on suspicion of drugged driving. Many of these drug abusers would have benefited by receiving the type of professional care provided by Harbor Village, a premier detox center located in Miami, Florida. Located in a beautiful setting, Harbor Village enables each client to experience 24/7 medically supervised detoxification in an upscale, state-of-the art environment.
