Australia cracks down on synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Australia imposed an interim ban on 19 synthetic cannabis and cocaine-like drugs on Sunday as part of a crackdown on the psychoactive substances which mimic the highs of their illegal counterparts. Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury said the 19 products would be banned from sale and supply for up to 120 days under consumer laws, a measure which will give states and territories time to update their laws to ban them. "Synthetic drugs are dangerous substances that can kill and should not be available for sale," Bradbury said. Many synthetic drugs are already banned in parts of Australia, but Bradbury said the market was fast-moving and suppliers had shown a willingness to change brand names and packaging to get around bans made under consumer laws. Australia's most populous state New South Wales temporarily banned synthetic drugs earlier this month after a 17-year-old Sydney boy fell to his death after taking a synthetic LSD product which made him believe he could fly. Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare confirmed Sunday that the government will also develop legislation to ensure unauthorised synthetic drugs cannot be imported. The move will mean that "new drugs coming onto the market are presumed to be illegal until the … Continue reading

Synthetic drugs banned nationally

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

The federal government is imposing an interim national ban on 19 synthetic drugs after Sydney teenager Henry Kwan took an LSD-like drug and fell to his death. The ban will prohibit the sale and supply of the drugs for 120 days, giving state and territories time to update their legislation and outlaw synthetic drugs. 'Synthetic drugs are dangerous substances that can kill and should not be available for sale,' minister assisting for deregulation David Bradbury said. 'The synthetic drugs market is fast-moving and suppliers have shown they are willing to change brand names and packaging to get around bans made under consumer laws.' He called on the state and territory governments to conduct an urgent review of their drug laws to make sure that synthetic drugs 'are not falling through the cracks'. Synthetic drugs were banned in NSW earlier this month following the death of 17-year-old Henry Kwan, who plunged from a balcony thinking he could fly after taking a synthetic form of LSD bought on the internet. Henry was farewelled in a Sydney funeral on Saturday. Read the original here: Synthetic drugs banned nationally … Continue reading

National ban on synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

The Federal Government is imposing an interim national ban on 19 synthetic drugs after Sydney teenager Henry Kwan took an LSD-like drug and fell to his death from the balcony of his family's home. Sale and supply of the drugs will be banned for 120 days to give State and Territory governments time to update their legislation and outlaw synthetic drugs. WA laws on synthetic drugs are regarded among the toughest in Australia, but tighter national laws are likely to make it more difficult for the drugs to be imported and make their way into WA. The WA ChemCentre, which contributed to a NSW Legislative Assembly legal affairs committee report into synthetic drugs, and the Australian Medical Association WA have been among those calling for national laws on the issue. ChemCentre head of illicit drugs Dominic Reynolds said the number of synthetic drugs seized in WA was small but diverse. Chemists had analysed synthetic forms of ecstasy, cocaine, LSD and cannabis. Many synthetic drugs can be bought from underground websites, which are used by Australian-based and international sellers, and police say online mail order is a popular means of importation. Federal Minister Assisting for Deregulation David Bradbury has urged State … Continue reading

Federal Government to ban synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013

Selling some synthetic drugs will be illegal around Australia, under a plan announced by the Federal Government today. Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury says 19 drugs have been banned for up to 120 days, under consumer law. But Mr Bradbury says New South Wales and the Northern Territory need to update laws to make the drugs illegal substances. He says if the national poisons schedule was adopted it would allow provide criminal sanctions to be imposed. "The most effective way is that these drugs be treated as illicit drugs and be subject to law enforcement by proper agencies," he said. "Of course people involved in their sale and distribution should be the subject of the same criminal sanctions as involved in the sale of cannabis or cocaine." The substances, which mimic the highs of their illegal counterparts, have been under the spotlight after Sydney teenager Henry Kwan jumped to his death earlier this month after reportedly taking a drug with effects similar to LSD. Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare says he will introduce legislation to ban the drugs' importation. Mr Clare says new drugs coming onto the market will be presumed to be illegal until authorities know what they are … Continue reading
