Incyte Drug Jakafi® (ruxolitinib) Improved Overall Survival in Phase III Trial of Patients with Myelofibrosis

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2013

STOCKHOLM--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Incyte Corporation (INCY) today announced results from two ongoing clinical trials of Jakafi (ruxolitinib), an oral JAK1 and JAK2 inhibitor that is FDA-approved for the treatment of patients with intermediate or high-risk myelofibrosis (MF), that were presented at the 18th Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) in Stockholm, Sweden. In a three-year follow-up analysis of the Phase III COMFORT-II study, treatment with Jakafi, which is marketed as Jakavi by Novartis outside the United States, was associated with improved overall survival and sustained reductions in spleen size compared to best available therapy. In a separate exploratory analysis of bone marrow fibrosis data from an ongoing Phase I/II single-arm, open-label clinical trial, by 48 months of treatment, Jakafi stabilized or reversed fibrosis of the bone marrow in 56 percent and 22 percent, respectively, of patients with MF, a magnitude of an effect not seen historically with best available therapy. Results of these studies represent the continuing evolution in our understanding of the clinical benefits of Jakafi for patients with intermediate or high-risk myelofibrosis and further support my confidence that long-term treatment with Jakafi may modify this progressive and life-threatening blood cancer, stated Srdan Verstovsek, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Department of … Continue reading

Diabetes breakthrough may mean one jab a year

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2013

Diabetics may only need one injection a year Experts believe the new technique will make it possible to treat patients with an annual injection of insulin. The new research, published in the leading Journal of Molecular Therapy Nucleic Acids last week, involves engineering blood stem cells into insulin-secreting cells. Experts at London's Imperial College, led by Professor Nagy Habib, and scientists at Hammersmith Hospital are now planning human trials of the new treatment after success in laboratory studies. Dr Paul Mintz, a leading stem cell researcher at Imperial College, who is part of the team pioneering the research, said: "This is a fantastic breakthrough that we hope will end the burden of daily jabs for diabetics." He added: "The beauty of this treatment is that we manipulate the patient's own stem cells, avoiding the complication of giving them something foreign which their body will reject." This is a fantastic breakthrough that we hope will end the burden of daily jabs for diabetics. Dr Paul Mintz, a leading stem cell researcher at Imperial College In diabetes the pancreas fails to make any insulin which crucially controls blood sugar levels or it doesn't make enough. In laboratory studies the researchers have been … Continue reading

Camp to help stroke survivors cope with lingering disabilities

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2013

As a registered nurse, Sharon Overcast spent 30 years caring for stroke patients. In December 2002, at age 62, she unwittingly became the patient after suffering a debilitating stroke. It was the end of life as she knew it. Her left arm and hand were rendered useless. Her left leg and ankle were remnants of what they once were. Its altogether different when it happens to you, Overcast said. I didnt think Id walk again. But she did with a little help. She now volunteers her time visiting other stroke survivors and their families, helping them comprehend that not everyone will recover the same and that some stroke-related disabilities will be more severe than others. Its a real change of life, she said. But you meet what happens to you and go on. Overcast, 72, plans to help others go on at a three-day Stroke Camp that will be held Sept. 27 through 29 in Red Lodge. St. Vincent Healthcare, a certified Primary Stroke Hospital, is sponsoring the camp for patients and caregivers. The specialty camp, which will be staffed by St. Vincent Healthcare stroke therapists, occupational and physical therapists, nurses and volunteers, is designed to help re-engage stroke victims, … Continue reading
