Real-Life True Blood : Synthetic Blood Is Coming — And So Are a Host of Potential Complications

Posted: Published on June 15th, 2013

Season 6 of HBOs vampire drama True Blood premieres on Sunday night, presumably following up on last years cliffhanger where the factory that produces Tru-Blood the bottled synthetic blood that allows vampires go vegetarian was burned to the ground, destroying the product that made it possible for vampires to non-violently co-exist with people. But out here in the real world, the future of synthetic blood is just beginning. After decades of global research, controversies, and failed approval petitions, the UKs Medical and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency finally gave researchers at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine the go-ahead late last month to start developing synthetic blood with adult stem cells. The license allows the researchers to use already-recognized stem cell technology to create a compound that would both eliminate the risk of infusion-transmitted infections and supplement (if not eventually take the place of) chronically limited blood banks worldwide. After years of partial synthetic successes at best, it will permit the first-ever human clinical trials of synthetic blood. Oh, also? The license permits blood manufacturing on an industrial scale. Cue the True Blood overture (albeit sans vampires). And according to Ruha Benjamin, a sociologist at Boston University, the arrival of synthetic … Continue reading

She was diagnosed with kidney maladies, her large intestines had lacerations, her uterus was inflamed, there was a polyp in her gall bladder and her pituitary gland had a disorder resulting in abnormal lactation. I went through six months of stem cell treatment. Dito lang naman sa atin ginawa kaya hindi na namin kailangang pumunta sa ibang bansa. After the treatment, mas lumakas na ang katawan ko kasi nga bagong mga cells ang nasa loob ng katawan ko. I feel more energized at parang nagdahilan lang ako sa sakit ko before. apceth's first innovative cellular anti-cancer drug based on modified mesenchymal stem cells enters Phase I / II of clinical testing multicenter trial will start in Munich in Q2 2013 already broad international interest from industry and academia Munich Germany /B3C newswire/ - As the first biopharmaceutical company worldwide, apceth GmbH & Co. KG with its headquarters and manufacturing sites in Munich and Ottobrunn (near Munich) has received approval to conduct a clinical cancer trial with its genetically modified, adult mesenchymal stem cells. This is an entirely new approach for the treatment of advanced types of cancer for which there is currently no effective treatment available. The multicenter, open-label trial will recruit patients suffering from advanced adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract. This innovative therapy is based on mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the patient's own (autologous) bone marrow, which are processed, genetically modified and re-infused into the patient. The stem cells thus modified specifically target the tumor and the cytotoxic gene product is selectively activated at the site of the tumor or its metastases to increase local efficacy and to reduce systemic toxicity, one of the main problems of systemic chemotherapy. This unique principle is also applicable to other cancer types. … Continue reading

Newswise Dr. Gary Mathern, professor of pediatric neurosurgery and director of the UCLA Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Program at Mattel Childrens Hospital UCLA, has been appointed co-editor-in-chief of Epilepsia, the official journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the leading source for current clinical and research results on all aspects of epilepsy. Mathern will serve as co-editor-in-chief with Astrid Nehlig, a researcher at the INSERM facility in Strasbourg, France. The pair will begin their four-year term starting July 1. According to the ILAE, Mathern and Nehlig were selected through a multi-tiered process in which applicants presented their thoughts about the future development of the journal and how it can continue to serve the international epilepsy community in an era of rapidly changing approaches to communicating new scientific information. Matherns clinical focus is on the surgical treatment of epilepsy, and his research work also involves the investigation of the neuropathology of epilepsy in the clinic and the laboratory. He has served the ILAE in a variety of capacities, most notably as co-chair of the Commission of Therapeutic Strategies and as chair of the Strategic Planning Commission. He has been on the editorial boards of seven journals and acts as reviewer … Continue reading

Autism, fetal alcohol disorder share molecular vulnerability

Surprise discovery may lead to drug for autism, other disorders. Bob Wright arrives for the Autism Speaks NFL Kickoff for a Cure II Benefit Gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. (UPI Photo/Laura Cavanaugh) License photo CHICAGO, June 13 (UPI) -- In a surprising finding, U.S. researchers say there is a common molecular vulnerability in autism and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, making treatment closer. Senior author Eva Redei, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said both disorders have symptoms of social impairment and originate during brain development in utero. The study, published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, found male offspring of rat mothers who were given alcohol during pregnancy had social impairment and altered levels of autism-related genes found in humans. Female offspring were not affected. However, Redei and colleagues found the alcohol damage could be reversed. A low dose of the thyroid hormone thyroxin given to the alcohol consuming rat mothers at critical times during their pregnancy alleviated social impairments and reversed the expression of autism-related genes in their male offspring, Redei said. "The beneficial effects of thyroxin in this animal model raises an exciting question … Continue reading
