Movie review: 'Side Effects' and the perils of pills for psychic self-defense

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2013

Love and Other Drugs already expostulated with definitive, exhaustive authority on the small-scale effects of maintenance pills on long-time Parkinsons sufferers and its potential for comedy, relationship drama, and the medical rep trade. Good thing director Steven Soderbergh takes a completely different, serious tack with Side Effects. Revealing any of the twists (at least the two major ones) would completely ruin the experience of this whodunit of a thriller for you, so well keep this review to the bare bones. This movie gleefully dives into the ramifications of pharmaceutical treatment for psychological ills, specifically on anti-depressant drugs. We begin with Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), who is one truly depressed woman. Her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum), has just been released from prison after serving four years for insider trading. He would have gotten away clean but, like many financial guys on the up and up, he got greedy and he got sloppy. So, he got caught. While Emily and Martins mom are amped that hes out of the big house, the family is still at ground zero when it comes to money. While she claims theres no connection to their financial woes, Emily shortly afterwards drives her car right smack into … Continue reading

DrugRisk Update: Injury Claims Grow As Study Shows Potential New Pradaxa Bleeding Concerns

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2013

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 10, 2013 The prescription drug safety advocates at DrugRisk.com are alerting patients taking the blood thinner Pradaxa of updated information on the site. As the number of injury claims grows*****, a new study warns that patients may not be taking the drug correctly and there may be an added risk when switching from other blood thinners*. DrugRisk was created to improve the safety of patients taking popular prescription drugs by providing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and legal news. Visitors can see if others are experiencing similar side effects and decide if they need legal advice. Pradaxa was launched in 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Experts disagree, however, about whether it carries higher risks for internal bleeding. The FDA recently advised that Pradaxa is no more dangerous than traditional blood thinner warfarin**. However, DrugRisk contains information from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, who warned that patients suffering Pradaxa bleeding are nearly 5 times as likely to die than those with bleeding from Coumadin or warfarin. They also named anticoagulants like Pradaxa among the most dangerous drugs available***. The resource center also contains research from the University of Illinois at Chicago suggesting … Continue reading

Mom facing Rock Hill drug charge determined to get children back

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2013

ROCK HILL Kristian McManus said that a week before she gave birth to a son, she took Lortab and Klonopin to calm her nerves and stop her pain. An hour before delivery, she swallowed half a Percocet. I was in so much pain, she said. When that pain came, I couldnt help myself. What I did was a mistake. On Feb. 17, Mcmanus, 22, gave birth to Brendyn Perdue. Four days later, the York County office of the Department of Social Services took custody of the newborn and Mcmanus daughter, 1-year-old Mary Katherine Perdue, after doctors told police she tested positive for opiates and benzodiazepines in her system just before delivery. According to a Rock Hill police report, she had trouble staying awake during labor. Test results determining if the baby tested positive for drugs are pending, said Rock Hill Police spokesman Mark Bollinger. Police investigated and last month issued a warrant for Mcmanus, saying she took benzodiazepines not prescribed to her during her third trimester and put her child at an unreasonable risk of harm. Benzodiazepines act as sedatives and relaxants, and can be detected in urine tests for hours or weeks depending on the drug. They are sometimes … Continue reading

Seized funds help tackle drug trade

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2013

Justice Minister Judith Collins today announced that money seized from drug crime will be allocated to Government agencies to directly fight crime and drug addiction. "As part of our 2009 Methamphetamine Action Plan, we made a commitment that money taken from those who profit from drugs would be used to hit the drug trade and reduce the harm from drugs," Ms Collins says. "Were sending a clear message that this Government is serious about tackling drugs, particularly methamphetamine, and the harm they cause in our communities." The Government has received about $8.3 million since the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act came into force in December 2009. Key agencies such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Corrections will now bid for funding for drug treatment projects and the New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Customs Service will bid for funding for law enforcement initiatives. Bids will be assessed by the Inter-Agency Committee on Drugs (IACD), who will then advise the government on the best programmes to fund. Ms Collins says the Government remains committed to fighting crime and drug dependency. "We must ensure our law enforcement agencies have the support they need to continue … Continue reading
