Temporary ban of synthetic drugs begins in NSW following death of Henry Kwan

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2013

The New South Wales Government is banning the sale of 18 synthetic drugs for 90 days following the death of a Sydney teenager. Synthetic drugs have come under scrutiny after 17-year-old student Henry Kwan jumped off a balcony while allegedly under the influence of a drug that mimics LSD. The ban applies to a range of drugs that mimic the effects of illegal drugs like cannabis, cocaine and methamphetamine. The NSW Minister for Fair Trading Anthony Roberts wants the ban to be made permanent and nationwide. "Federal Government support in this case is crucial," he said. Mr Roberts says the next step is to approach the Federal Health Minister and Assistant Treasurer. "We can take these products off the shelves for 90 days but I am hoping that the Federal Government will come in behind us and assist us," he said. "This has to be a whole of government and jurisdictional approach to this scourge." Retailers have until Tuesday to clear their shelves of synthetic drugs or face fines of up to $1.1 million. "It is not acceptable for you to continue selling these products that cause harm," said Mr Roberts. Read this article: Temporary ban of synthetic drugs begins … Continue reading

Drugs, cash, car seized in Sydney raids

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2013

Eight men have been charged and more than $110,000 cash, 4.5 kilograms of drugs, a stun gun and a luxury car seized by police investigating organised crime. The haul follows raids on six homes in Sydney's west late on Friday by strike force Ballista, which was set up a year ago to investigate the supply of the drug ice and one of its key ingredients. Its investigations have resulted in 12 arrests and 51 charges, and turned up almost 50 kilograms of drugs including ice, 15 firearms, a sword, a stun gun and more than 2000 rounds of ammunition. Asian Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, says it's a great outcome for the community. 'The seizure of large amounts of drugs and firearms has prevented these illicit commodities being distributed on the streets,' he said in a statement. 'As equally important, detectives have been able to dismantle two criminal networks by arresting and charging those who will be alleged to have been integral to the ongoing supply of both firearms and drugs within NSW.' The men arrested after Friday's searches, all aged between 22 and 25, face charges including supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, possessing or … Continue reading

NSW to ban synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2013

Up to 120 fair trading officers will hit shops across NSW to enforce a ban on the sale of synthetic drugs following the death of a Sydney teenager. NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts says retailers who breach the 90-day ban on selling 18 synthetic drugs will face fines of up to $1.1 million. Officers from his department have a list of targets. "This week we'll be undertaking the largest operation ever seen in the commonwealth with respect to the crackdown on retailers selling these products that cause harm, and in some cases, death," Mr Roberts told reporters on Sunday. "I want to make it clear: if you are a retailer that sells these harmful products, my message to you is get them off your shelves before fair trading officers visit you." Fair Trading assistant commissioner Robert Vellar says officers will apply the full force of the law to ensure the products are taken off the shelves. "We'll have people in shopping centres walking into stores and if those products are being sold, they will be provided with the ban and advice on what to do with the products," he said. The synthetic drug industry is worth $700 million nationally, … Continue reading

Fungus Found in Drugs from Tenn. Pharmacy

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2013

Federal health officials say they have found bacteria and fungus in drug vials from a Tennessee specialty pharmacy that recalled all of its injectable medicines last month. The Food and Drug Administration said in an online posting Friday that it identified the growths in two unopened vials of a steroid injection distributed by the Main Street Family Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Newbern, Tenn. The agency said it is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the exact species of fungus and bacteria. State and federal officials began investigating the pharmacy last month after seven patients in North Carolina and Illinois reported skin abscesses after being injected with methylprednisolone acetate, a steroid used to treat inflammation, joint pain and respiratory issues. The same steroid was involved in a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak last year that has killed 58 people and sickened more than 740 others. The FDA said it is not aware of any cases of meningitis associated with Main Street Family Pharmacy's products. Last month the pharmacy recalled its entire stock of sterile products manufactured after Dec. 6, 2012. A spokesman for the Main Street Family Pharmacy said its owners are aware of the FDA's … Continue reading
